What are us college-graduating Americans, from US universities mind you, supposed to do about this mass usurpation of job opportunities that are making us less likely to succeed? The strength of a country is in its citizens, not a corporation cheating and replacing our citizens with non-citizens who they feel may give them a competitive advantage (which is unfair to our citizens). meh, I would forget about the real estate thing for now. Seems like the only people I know who got into it young were those with rich families who gave them tons of cash up front.

If I were you, I'd just go for the math teaching job. If you're willing to move, you'll find something pretty quickly. And don't just say you're bad at behavioral questions, figure out what the problem is and go from there. Tons of resources out there. Try to do a mock interview with somebody who won't just blow smoke up your buttcheeks.

Also, there's still plenty of stuff for IT, but you are right it's insanely competitive. Any idea on what area you'd potentially want to jump into? Networking? Security? There's plenty of certs to be had. If you really want to get back into IT, I'd imagine you've made some kind of personal progress over the past year. Certs? New languages? I know it's competitive as hell out there, and I'm not saying you "should be in ______ position by now", but I'm curious if you've managed to work towards anything in that area.

This. The notion that Patels do great IT work is bullshit. They don’t apply any critical thinking and need to be spoon fed step by step directions on how to do anything. They also do a lot of stuff to hide their laziness and inefficiencies, ie, demanding that a stupid fucking ticket be submitted to complete a task that should take less than a minute. RE is mostly a side thing, you don't have to have TONS of cash up front, but at least something in the 5 figures worth to take out a loan to get there... it definitely takes at least a year or two to realistically build up lots of equity from that, though.

Willing to move now that I sold my house, yes. I'd want to teach in a relatively decent-paying district (~50k or better is a good starting point for a teacher starting out) that isn't super ghetto... for those reasons, also because I don't want to move back into my parent's house, San Antonio is a no-go. Really either DFW or out of state. Unfortunately I don't really have anyone to do a mock interview for that with, lol. Don't really have any friends that are into HR stuff, I guess. Almost all of the friends I had in college and work were IT and business.

I didn't make any new friends at all in 2017, mainly because I was at home all year. A year further apart from my college friends with little or no texting contact, it was pretty much just me, my wife, and my mostly awful roommates that I met on craigslist.

Definitely applications development, database administration, analytics/data science, with some programming are my areas of IT that I've studied and worked with... NO experience with Networking, Support/Helpdesk or Security. Unfortunately, I made zero progress in 2017 because I didn't work and was looking and literally applying for jobs all year with only a limited success of obtaining actual final interviews. Wasn't in college of course, was just trying to tread water and look for a new position. No new education since I was laid off in January 2017 since I've been looking ardently, I'm not exactly unemployed by choice!

Like I said... the competition math is unfavorable, whenever a decent company is hiring a new little class of developers (I'll use my State Farm interview as an example) it's around 1000-1500 people in total who submit applications, around 100 interviews and around 5 new hires. Part of it is to blame on foreigners, but the other thing that is a problem is the pervasiveness of the online application being the primary way to apply for these types of jobs these days. A lot of these 1000-1500 people, such as me, are easily applying through third party sites like Indeed, Dice, Monster, even Linkedin. Those all make it super convenient to apply for 100+ jobs in a couple hours or less. Therefore a mass cesspool of applicants that essentially turn screening HR staff into robots.

100% Agree. Not to mention they shower maybe once a week. But the other stuff you mentioned is more relevant, in all seriousness. They are very difficult to work with and be in teams with in IT. I saw them cut corners every day. And they only associate with each other. They're EXTREMELY ethnocentric and xenophobic and seem upset as per their face and body langauage when someone not Indian tries to communicate with them. Also, they don't really even try to learn English or the American culture very well, they don't assimilate, the vast majority aren't even open minded to interracial dating and marriage.

It's a shame, because my freshman year in college in 2013 I was a pre-pharmacy student and was around a lot of Indians in the Science/Health Science fields (pre-med, pre-pharmacy, pre-dental, biomedical research etc) and they were WAY better people and way more open and friendly than those in IT who are mainly gruff, antisocial ideologues. Example..... there was this pre-surgeon guy in my first dorm building named Priyank Patel who had a hot blonde girlfriend he walked with all the time, and a pre-pharmacy girl in another dorm named Manasa Gummaraju who had a serious white boyfriend. Lazy corporations, absolutely. Trump (or whoever is president, or congress for that matter) needs to impose tax penalties for hiring and employing non-US citizens on US-site jobs. If you're talking helpdesk and similar crappy $14/hour jobs you can pick up as a high school senior, then definitely. But the real entry-level out of college IT jobs, in development, data analytics, et cetera... the ones that pay $60-80k and up... they do require a degree of knowledge of relative cutting edge stuff like java and SQL (not brand new languages, but it's not menial stuff either).

2017... LOST all of that. Except my degree, of course, which is useless with a year unemployment gap on my resume.

Oh and by the way... Khalil Mack is awesome, Mayowa is a JAG, and the Raiders' defense mostly sucks outside of Mack. We good bro?

You don't want to get involved in any pre-packaged systems. Continue to keep an eye out for physics based programming languages. Most of them wont' work but you need to at least be familiar with them so that you can jump on board once the transition is obvious. Also keep up the continued education programs and become familiar with CIHCO and Vetron ExTRAP.

You're on the right track and have the right attitude it seems. The best thing I ever did for my self was build a lab at home and learn real hands on shit with out fear of breaking a production environment. Keep learning and don't be afraid to share info and IT experiences. I found that people respect you not only based on work production and work ethic but also because you are constantly learning something new. It's also a huge power play. Trust me when I say people get intimidated when you keep gaining knowledge. Don't be a condescending know it all prick. No one likes a know it all or show off especially in the IT world. Many co workers over the years have been fired because of this shit. Try to be a team player and stay productive and always be looking to move up the ladder. Don't get stuck in an entry level position too long. Have fun and good luck.

By the way do not under any circumstances allow some college grad come around pushing his degree around. I didn't go to college right away and I was well into my IT career before I started going to college. It was best for me because I got to see what it was like in real life first. Then I just understood that the Degree was for my resume. My certifications and work experience far exceed my college degree.

The bank of america job was just that though, they barely had us on any assignments, and when they would put us on a team they'd take us off in a new york minute, replace us with some paneer patel with 15 years experience, so you wonder why they had to lay a lot of us off. Smh

When companies do they scoop them up. It’s most likely you a trash developer with the typical social retard developer personality to go along with it.

Nope. So I'm up in Columbus, OH right now and even though there are less total companies w/jobs per se than DFW, one of the main differences is their requirements... I have roughly 2 years corporate experience and a college degree, up here for example you can get a mid-level position with 1-2 years work experience and a college degree..... for the same positions in DFW it's ridiculous because of competition. 5+ years REQUIRED, plus a college degree, meaning nobody under 27 or so gets a chance.

I've called around recruiters/head hunters in DFW over the months and they've increasingly been telling me that there are no available entry level development/dba positions available in DFW, and that the mid level positions will always require 5 years experience or else my application goes in the trash.

I called recruiters here in Columbus today and they said they have several opportunities up here presently, and I can qualify for mid level up here with only 2 years exp and a degree. I can qualify as a local resident because I own a house up here, they don't have to know or care that it's a fix and flip house. I got a library pass here, too. Woot.


The only bad thing is there's going to be a huge snow storm later today which means I'll be driving on hundreds of miles of ice and snow to get back to Plano tomorrow/Sunday. 1050-1100 miles, 16-18 hours. It's the pits.
