Video posted on social media*by fans at the game in Lubbock, Texas, show forward Wes Harris and other West Virginia players trying to reach the sideline as fans swarmed the court Saturday in celebration of*No. 8 Texas Tech's 72-71 win*over No. 2 West Virginia.

These guys desperately need some kind of go to player that is somewhat difficult to stop. The more I watch the team, the more I think they are going to fizzle out as the year goes on. The defense is great, but they go through long stretches where it's like pulling teeth trying to get a basket. The long droughts are usually ended by someone making a tough fadeaway with a hand in their face.

They snuck up on Kansas, and got a big home win against WVU but I see them finishing fourth in the Big XII imo

yep, this looks like a textbook sweet 16 team. It's hard not to like the team. They play hard defense, make few mistakes, and maximize their talent. It's just that the elite playmaking ability isn't there from anybody on the team. Texas, being more athletic across the board, somewhat exposed them last night. Especially in the front court. Bamba just erased anybody who he was guarding, but the real head scratcher was the fact that they couldn't even get by the tubby Bill Walton look a like

gotta give props where props is due. I thought Texas Tech would just revert back to being the cellar of the Big XII after all those losses, but it's clear that they'll be a top 3, top 4 team in the Big XII year in year out as long as Beard is the coach. It's bittersweet though, because you know it's only a matter of time before he's out the door to UT or somewhere similar.

The way they play defense is how I had hoped the team would look when they had shitty Pat Knight here. They had similar talent (good Juco transfers, good athletes, but no 4 or 5 star prospects) but they didn't make up for it by playing physical defense like they are now

Great showing IMO

Just thinking of TTU's history, it's ludicrous to think that they could go toe to toe with a team like this during a rebuilding year where they lost so many players.

The way they played this game, and how they shut down Villanova's offense last year, it's only a few years before they actually become legitimate national title contenders at this rate. That's all assuming Beard stays though

Blake

Duke just out NBA talented them.

That was pretty much my thought watching RJ Barrett play. Just put his head down, drove, and used his size/athleticism to score ala college Derrick Rose and that was pretty much the difference. Jones is a damn good player though, very underappreciated with all the talent on the roster

He's still very raw. I'm sure a team drafts him and just let's him play developmental league for a few years. His game reminds me of Kobe's.

I'm a bigger fan of Moretti's game tbh. I'm hoping he's still here again next year

Kinda nervous about this week, not sure what to expect. I know usually the general outlook isn't too bright for teams that fell short of the semis in their conference tournament, but this feels a little different in that TTU was red hot before letting their guard down against a team they already massacred earlier in the year. I'm optimistic that this was more of a blip on the radar and they're itching to get out there and get the bad taste out of their mouth.

I watched some highlights of a few of their games, and they honestly remind me of the 2007 Warriors. They play at 100 mph, everybody can shoot and they all have the greenlight, decent defense, and 3-4 veteran skilled players who can create their own shot. They have some pretty eye popping box scores this season and while their overall schedule is obviously not that great, they do have wins at West Virginia and at Syracuse

"....In Thursday night’s Sweet 16 pairing between Michigan and Texas Tech, that mentality will cut both ways. According to kenpom.com data, Texas Tech has the nation’s top-rated defense with an adjusted efficiency of 85.5. Michigan sits a shred behind at 86.0. Both teams have six losses, neither got enough credit entering the year (Michigan opened at No. 19 in the AP Poll; Texas Tech was unranked), and now, they’re two wins away from the Final Four. "

"What scares me about Michigan? Everything,” Beard said. “Starts with their Hall of Fame coach, simply stated this team doesn’t beat themselves. If you’re going to beat Michigan, you have to score more points than them. We will have to play our cleanest game of the year, our best 40 minutes.”

"This one is shaping up as a game where every possession matters, with potential for the sort of back-and-forth that can cement a game as a classic. Some might see a rock fight, others might see rock, paper, scissors. Regardless, you’re likely to get a good one."

yeah idk what to think of Michigan State. part of me thinks we'll be fine, and the mono-suicidal part of me thinks that they do some things well that we are weak at or intentionally give up i.e. three point shooting and offensive rebounding. I thought Gonzaga would burn us on those two, but they were clearly rattled by the Texas Tech Ravens' defense whereas Michigan State seems like a much more mentally tough team.

Who knows though, just talking out of my ass per par etc....haven't watched them that much. As the Beard says, it comes down to scoring more points than they do at the end of the day. I think the key matchup in this one, is whoever comes out with the higher point total wins the game

They are so fun to watch.

Their switches are so perfectly timed, and then the long kid in the middle comes off his man at just the right moment to make a block. It’s beautifully controlled intensity. They play very hard on defense without going spastic, that’s very difficult for a college kids. And they have scouted their opponents and overplay them like they have practiced against them every day.

All they have to do is makes some shots. The white guard brought game and when he went sour their best player, with great patience and selflessness then took over. No panic, or getting mad or retribution (I’m gonna show coach he should have played me more stuff)

TT in the finals... pigs fly. And in this case, pigs deserve to fly.

The coach really does believe his bench guys can contribute because he has taught them. That muscular center did not go for blocks, he moved his feet, hands, and was just terrific on rebounds. He knows what he can do. He does not try to fill in trying to replace a guy who has a gift for shot blocking thus leading to stupid fouls and getting out of position. He does his thing very well.

Yeah their defense is insane. They basically just funnel you to the baseline and trap you, which gives you a horrible passing lane. If anybody happens to get into the middle of the court and drive the lane, there's already somebody waiting to take a charge. You can tell they scout the post players well too and know their tendencies. I know vs Gonzaga and Michigan State, whenever a guy caught it in the post, somebody was already creeping behind the guy's strong shoulder and soon as he made his move it was right into the teeth of a double team. Pretty much all of the easy buckets that teams are used to getting are all taken away by the defensive scheme Tech runs.

This kind of basketball is absolutely wonderful to watch.
I can see how TT might lose some games, but this current level is very difficult to beat because different guys are contributing offensively by making shots.
They give themselves every chance in the world to win because the D is so efficient. Now they are not even fouling that much things are so well timed. And they showed they can adjust with subs on D. Offensively, One night its the Italian kid hitting, next the tough white kid, or the penetrating strong guard. And then they got the one legit pro level kid who can actually wait his turn. He trusts his teammates but he can bring them home like the last minute and a half hitting those shots.

They wore Michigan St. down. Thats ridiculous. Michigan St. rarely gets beat in that type of game. Both teams got the games they are best at and Tech won.

I could go on and on. They set very smart screens. If the angle does not work the screener does not force a foul turnover, screener just lets it go and they set up quickly again. No moving screens, sticking hips and legs out getting stupid fouls on offense in which they dont get a shot.

yeah that's what I was most proud of. Michigan State basketball is the epitome of grind it out, toughness, blue collar, rough you up, etc. and Texas Tech bullied them right from the get-go. MSU played good defense in the first half, but it still seemed like Tech's shots were not that difficult to come by whereas MSU struggled just to get any kind of decent attempt

In the name of John Denver, Pat Green, Sheryl Swoopes, Scott Pelley, Michael Crabtree, Patrick Mahomes, Emily Jones, Darvin Ham, the statue of Buddy Holly, and everyone associated with Lubbock and Texas Tech, please don’t blow this for the rest of Texas.

America is watching. If the Red Raiders win on Monday night in Minneapolis, please don’t go all Texas Tech on us again and embarrass not only yourselves, but Texas, to only further solidify a stereotype about the Red Raiders and Lubbock.

Too many people think Texas Tech is the cousin who shows up late at Thanksgiving and picks a fight over whether Lynyrd Skynyrd could beat up Dale Earnhardt.

What happened in Lubbock on Saturday night after the Red Raiders advanced to the national title game by defeating Michigan State is 50 percent shameful, and 250 percent predictable.

TT not fouling up by 3 was the difference. You always foul there.

yeah I was afraid that giving up that three in regulation was going to end up being a "not giving it to Lynch" level of a gaffe that would end up costing them the game and sure enough it did.

tbh Tech lost their composure the last few minutes of regulation and OT on offense. It just turned into panicked hero-ball while UVA ran their sets and got much better looks. They deserved the win IMO

This was a very evenly matched tournament.

Virginia took care of business in OT. Can’t really blame the officials for that loss IMO. Amazing run by Tech. Definitely put UT and the rest of the Big XII to shame with that run.
I don't mind at all what Tech accomplished this year...because fuck Kansas and their faggot ass fan base. I'll take any other team in the Big 12 making a run as long as they aren't.

1. No tears. This whole season was cake with extra frosting.

2. Culver sucked bad last night. His draft stock won't drop but Tech needed him to step up and he Browned it.

2a. The rest of the team balled out. Very proud of all of them except Culver.

4. That one call in ot where the ball went off Moretti was the swing for Virginia. And then that drive and kick to the corner for the 3 was genius. Tech was completely sold he was going up for layup.

5. Virginia was just the better team. Amazing that Tech managed to hang around and not go away there in the 2nd half.

pretty much. The phantom foul where Guy tripped over his own man in OT really stings but like you said Virginia just looked like the better team most of the night

"The bettor (who didn't wish to be identified for this story) wanted more than $1,500 on Texas Tech, but SuperBook director John Murray declined. "He's a well-known player who takes a lot of futures positions with us," Murray told ESPN. "He asked for more, to which we said, 'No.' I think to win $300K is pretty good."

The bettor settled for a $1,500 ticket on the Red Raiders at 200-1 odds, for a payout of $300,000.

Almost four months later, that ticket was one game away from cashing. And despite an offer from Dez Bryant and another for $125,000 on PropSwap (a secondary marketplace for sports-betting futures tickets), the bettor let it ride. Texas Tech lost to Virginia 85-77 on Monday night in the championship game.

He made other college basketball bets, including several on Virginia winning, so he still won some money. But he'll always be contemplating what could have been if Texas Tech had won.."

:lol shit you're telling me. I remember watching them early on when they were beating up on the small Texas D-II esque schools when I was trying to get a feel for the team. I remember looking at Mooney in particular, and thinking it was going to be a long season if we we were going to have a bulky white guy from South Dakota starting at guard. Fast forward to now, and it's beyond insane to see how much he accomplished this season

yep didn't see that one coming. I'd have to agree, especially from a coaching perspective. A win over the #1 team in the country without your best player and a goofy-looking unathletic walk-on having to play half the game.

this year's Texas Tech team is the classic "high effort/energy" team with no playmakers that will get bounced in the first or second round of the tournament. Although I don't know if they will even get in at this rate. They're obviously a quality team but they don't have that go to guy this year which is costing them all these close games.

you know you're screwed when your midget, spot up three point shooting white guy has to go one-on-one with the game on the line because nobody else is capable of stepping up tbh imho. Holyfield/Ramsey have disappeared faster than whottt after an m>s sighting

Blake

If they make the tourney at all.

Tech is also lacking a true big. The NCAA is screwing us by taking their sweet time on deciding about letting the transfer from UNLV play right away or not.

May just have to take an L on this year and look forward to next

On that note, I don't know why Beard didn't give Tchewa more minutes in the second half after the spark he gave us early. Probably the only time under his tenure I've legitimately questioned a coaching decision

Yeah was wondering the same. Especially the way Kentucky killed us on the offensive boards.

That said, the glaring issue in the box score was the 3 point fg%: Tech 15% Uk: 46%
