fter spending most of 2017 failing to reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) while they were busy trying to kill Obamacare and passing a huge tax cut for the rich, Republicans have finally decided to include a six-year CHIP reauthorization in a short-term funding bill to keep the government open for four weeks. If a continuing resolution doesn’t pass before Friday night — that’s tomorrow! — there will be a government shutdown.
Needless to say, the GOP funding bill doesn’t include any protections for DACA recipients, guaranteeing that Dems will reject it. So now, Republicans are shocked, shocked that those hypocritical Democrats are threatening to kill health insurance for nine million children who could have been covered well before Republicans let CHIP funding lapse at the end of September. Here are some House Rs tut-tutting about Democratic foot-dragging in a presser last night:
Why yes, that is the definition of “chootspah.”
Louisiana Republican Rep. Ralph Abraham explained why those mean Dems hate your kids so much, insisting, “The Democrats would rather support illegal aliens as opposed to our American children.” That ought to play well in campaign ads back home. In a press release, Abraham really poured it on thick, because don’t you know the Democrats just can’t stand helping America’s babies?
Thursday’s vote will be the third time that Republicans in the House have attempted to reauthorize CHIP despite continued Democrat opposition.
The House’s November bill to reauthorize CHIP paid for the program by stealing from other medical spending, like preventative care, a tiny detail Abraham doesn’t mention. Most, but not all, Dems also voted against the last CR because it didn’t include a DACA fix (and it also only paid for CHIP for six months).
Oregon Republican Greg Walden just couldn’t believe how much Democrats hate women and babies, either.
What is the issue that they have against children and pregnant women being covered by CHIP?
Will no one think of the poor wee babbies, he cried, while threatening to toss 700,000 DACA kids over the border wall.
The Rs’ sudden discovery of the plight of families who depend on CHIP didn’t seem to be fooling anyone. Julie Rovner of Kaiser Health News wasn’t impressed:

The Daily Beast even managed to find a Republican congressional aide who was happy to admit this was more about trying to hurt Dems than to help kids, because if you have hostages, it’s silly not to use them, isn’t it?
After Democrats slammed Republicans for not caring about sick children for months, the GOP is turning the tables on Democrats with the government funding package with CHIP provisions […] Democrats are faced with a choice to eat their words or support a Republican vote.
See? Republicans care so much about kids, they really do. They’re simply aghast that Democrats, those hard-hearted curs, won’t throw Dreamers under the bus.
