View Full Version : Jalen Rose: Kawhi Wants out of SA

Either way, this isn't good.

Kawhi wouldn't be the player he is today if it wasn't for Spurs organization. That being said, could this be Spurs jabber to rid themselves of who they've determined is an ever-injured Kawhi? If it truly is a Hardaway/Hill scenario, it might be best to have him move on before having to offer the supermax.

If I were a betting man (which I am) I'd say Jalen's sources (and possibly SAS' as well since he's media too) are Monroe and the other SA reporter he mentioned. They probably exchanged texts or a call and confirmed there is some dissent between Leonard's camp and the Spurs FO.

What makes this whole thing super weird is the fact that the team doctors found no structural issues (if that report is true) with Leonard's quad, yet Leonard still reports feeling pain enough to sit a huge portion of the season. Unless he's doing this half out of rehab half sitting out style (like what you see in the NFL when RBs/WRs are unhappy).

Thanks for sharing.

sounds to me like Kawhi is holding himself out. which goes right with what Pop said, that he didn't have confidence in his body to be playing and that he wasn't well enough.

That should silence the spurstalk fan mob that was arguing it was all a Pop shtick and that Kawhi ought to be playing bcczzzzzz... :ihit

In reality Kawhi hasn't been that well and he's looking to get better. but I know that will not end the trolling.

That's from the same source who said Kawhi was worried about the roster back in October... 3 months after FA period..

Unlike Chinook I disagree the summer moves and the roster they signed is A-ok... but I think the point he made about the injury being crucial is key personally.

That is where this chilling is coming from. I don't credit the statements about Kawhi being concerned for the roster, personally.. even though I myself am concerned about this roster.

If only we were like Cleveland where we could attract big name free agents like Love, Thomas, Rose, Wade. They have such a great team.

Kawhi knows it takes more than big name players to win in this league. You do need some but not everyone is going to make a super team like the warriors. You need the right parts, the right pieces. So I call B.S. about him wanting to leave SA because we can't attract big FA's.

Kyrie did want to come here. Aldridge did come here, Rudy Gay signed with us.

Mills was a bad signing but that happens to a lot of teams.

Idk I just don't see this being the main issue. I do believe he's frustrated but I just think it's because of his injury. Not being able to finish playoffs last year and hardly play this year is taking it's toll on him.

:lol again not sure why anybody would take Jalen fucking Rose seriously tbh...

As I said probably some tensions between Kawhi staff / crew and FO over injury treatment and rehab and maybe some of his crew complaining here and there about Spurs not getting sufficient help for Kawhi. It is nevertheless very unlikely that those rumors come from Kawhi, dude is imho entirely focused on his rehad and try to not freak out about a possible grant hill shit... you think he would throw under the bus the organization when he was not able to play 10 games this season ? also very doubtful when you know a bit his personality.

Wizard's First Rule: People will believe anything if they either want it to be true or are afraid that it is.

01-23-2018, 03:39 PM
That's exactly how you play this if you're Leonard's de-facto agent. You let the story leak (or feed it and state the terms of the leak) and then back off to preserve your own image. But the statement is made and well heard at this point. Spurs have to do something otherwise they will lose Leonard.

If that is true, then I would feel really comfortable. They will make sure to do whatever it takes to keep him happy in San Antonio.

Take this with a grain of salt, if you want to believe it.

https://www.si.com/sports-illustrated/video/2018/01/23/si-now-tuesday-january-23-2018

Quote:

Jared Zwerling: "I had a phone conversation yesterday with Dennis Robertson, Kawhi's uncle and business manager, who is based in New Jersey. Dennis called me and we had a nice chat. Before Dennis called me he said he had a conversation with RC Buford, GM of the Spurs, and said they had a great conversation. Overall, here's the consensus: the story is farthest from the truth. That was a quote from Dennis. We talked about the situation. Really, there's no issue between Kawhi and the Spurs. Kawhi has the utmost respect for Popovich and Buford. It's not about any issues internally. This is about not having any more setbacks. There's no re-injury right now. The focus is strengthening that left quad. It's really important because the quad is an injury that can come back and bite you. It's an injury you can get again and re-injure a lot easily, so it's about strengthening that quad and keeping Kawhi focused on getting back to that strength to help him into the NBA situations. That's the focus right now."
Again, what's he going to say? If Kawhi really does want out, his agent still isn't going to tell it to the whole world and diminish his trade value.

Kawhi hasn't come out and denied anything. Just the Spurs and his uncle. To me that's the smoking gun.

When bad news goes to a group of people, those people will flock to anyone who gives them hope/good news. See: Hitler and Post World War I Germany.

Hence why I said take it with a grain of salt. Of course Kawhi's uncle isn't gonna say "Fuck yeah, he wants out that bitch". It's just damage control until we hear it straight from Kawhi.

It could be damage control even if it came from Kawhi..

I’ve stated in my 2020 thread that the Spurs fans and PATFO shouldn’t feel comfortable until he signs another deal..

Wow really? Neymar had his uncle involved as well? That's hilarious actually.

Haha yeah his father is his agent as well and in soccer they give out a ton of signing bonuses to the agent as well. Dealing with family members in sports is such BS, but at least Kawhi's uncle was willing to put these rumors to rest.

this is common knowledge in Brazil, Neymar's father is one of the most greedy guys in the world of football, in less than two years Neymar will be in Madrid

After which he will be completely dead to me if he signs for them.

I always thought that the very odd re signing of Aldridge and Pop eating humble pie about this situation had more to do with some real trouble with Kawhi than LaMarcus himself. And the rushed signings of Gasol and Patty for that matter...

players are attracted to cleveland because of lebron. they know if they go there, they're making the finals. kawhi in the west doesn't have that same pull

we brought in LMA a year removed from winning a championship, while duncan was playing for peanuts and before the warriors had KD

Also by being a pain in the ass during the middle of his contract, he could be perceived as a premadonna and annoying, possibly ruling out some suitors. So the messaging has to be done carefully and not directly. Like via an undisclosed media leak.

If true (and not some ploy from his camp to ensure they offer the super max), on the one hand, I don't blame him. On the other hand, I do. If he had a problem with the direction of the franchise, he should have discussed it with them sometime between the end of the season and draft. He also should have been an active participant in recruiting in recent years.

Step 1: Unless they believe this injury to be career altering, attempt to repair the relationship. Even though they could obviously get a massive return, no return would be equal to his healthy self.

Step 2: Failing that, trade him to Celtics for Brown, Tatum, requisite salary filler and one of their lesser 1sts.

You know people are talking shit about the construction of the team but it surprisingly ended up being solid all things considered, imo. I like the length and versatility on the team. Injuries =/= poor construction. Murray-LDN-Kawhi-Gay/Fathead-LMA or even Fathead-LDN-Kawhi-Gay-LMA would've been pretty sweet but we haven't really gotten a chance to see it bc of injuries. I still we are at the very least the 2nd best team in the league if the squad is healthy, tbh.

The Paddy contract absolutely sucks but I'm thinking there's at least one dumbass GM out there that would help move it if needed.

They misdiagnosed his injury last year thus mishandled it until Kawhi sought out second opinions from his own medical team.

Oh, so the Spurs, an organization known for being overly cautious with injuries, misdiagnosed an injury and doubled down on it to the point where Kawhi sought out a second opinion that said it was more severe than the Spurs were letting on. Got it.

The Spurs operates over the cap last summer and opted to run it back + add Gay vs. tearing it down and chasing a FA that likely wasn’t going to come. Heck, they had flexibility when Gasol opted out but nothing panned out during the moratorium. The Mills deal was an overpay as was the Gasol one. But Gasol has been very good this year and it frankly doesn’t matter what either got paid this year because of them being capped out. It does impact future years though.

Parker deal is expiring after this year and likely comes back cheaper. Murray is on a bargain rookie contract so offsets the bad money going to Mills.

Manu has been outstanding this year, so false argument to blame his success for what you perceive as a failure in roster construction. Green is a super valuable piece and any team would kill to have him at his price tag. Green-Manu-Forbes is probably the best bang for buck at SG in the league.

Agree on the lack of backup big. They swung and missed on Joff. But it matters a lot less in playoffs as you’ll see mostly Gay/Bertans/Anderson types at the 4.

Kawhi wasn't much of a cheerleader on the bench tonight. Mostly sulking. As a body language expert, I can tell you this bodes badly for Spurs nation. :depressed

Fake news.

I was at the game. Kawhi was more exuberant than normal. He would walk up to the huddle, have words with Dejounte. He encouraged Bertans. He was laughing with Danny. He was hi-fiving Lamarcus...

EDIT: Also he and LeBron had about a 2 minute conversation before tip-off - they were really respectful of each other, lots of laughs, appreciative hugs, etc...

Why wouldn't Kawhi want to disminish his trade value? :lol

If he disminishes his trade value the team he will end up with will have to give out less and therefore his team will be stronger. :lol

Meh...

It's not like they came out and said, " From what I'm hearing, LeBron wants to go to San Antonio."

Max simply said, he thinks LeBron should go to San Antonio.

Max is not Jalen. Jalen is not Max. Max was giving his opinion on what he thinks LeBron should do. Jalen was basically giving information on what he heard (true or not).

Two entirely different things that just happen to be talked about days apart

I don't see how the two circumstances have any congruencey besides both being on ESPN.

It's still an example of how polarizing the show is.

Yesterday they had Jalen saying Kawhi wants out because San Antonio can't attract any major free agents.

You've also got Stephen A claiming Robertson as his source for Kawhi's discontent, when Robertson was the first guy to come out and dispute the rumors.

Today Max is saying that the biggest free agent on the market should go to San Antonio.

I get that they are different people with differing opinions, but they cant have it both ways. I've also gone on record that I think they are all just talking out their asses.

It's like I said yesterday...they throw shit at the wall, see what sticks, and then act like they know what they are talking about.

A rumour like the one about KL sounds to me like an easy manager strategy to announce his/her player is on the market without truly putting egg on the face of the franchise, the player nor the player's management team. All parties play it down as media circus and in the meantime franchises that are interested will make voluntary enquiries. Nothing more nothing less I guess.

But you criticize Durant and lebron after they win titles. Or the way they won them. But you know you wouldn't care if your were a fan of the warriors or cavs. If they surround kl with the right help he needs and the spurs win a title you wouldn't care because they won it all. It's not that ridiculous because NBA players actually do it. Eric Gordon comes to mind. He spent his entire time with the Pelicans "injured" and the local media was saying there was nothing wrong with him. Sure enough he goes to Houston and he's fine and all the vague injuries go away.

I'm not saying that's the case with Leonard but you can't really rule it out in today's NBA.

No MVP caliber player is going to tarnish his legacy by sitting out a whole season for a bogus injury. Especially when he is on the cusp of getting a massive raise. Obviously, Kawhi feels like there is something still wrong and so it is hard to fault him for that. Whether he is right or not is a whole other subject.

I'm on the side of letting him just sit out the season at this point. Let him get where he feels he needs to be and let's tool up for next year. And that has the added benefit of letting Aldridge and our flawed roster crash and burn. Which sets up the perfect excuse for the Spurs to do an uncharacteristic Spurs move and blow up the roster in the offseason.

Bottom line, this saga continues because KL has not come out to quiet any rumours down. You would think that he would have said something by now if he was really bothered with it all. Because he doesn't, speculation mounts. Him saying something would put an end to the intrigue. At least temporarily.
In the very end, you have to conclude there is something fishy going on. Maybe unresolved.
I also dare say this has been brewing for a while and somehow PATFO was expecting a no KL year. This is where the extension of LMA deal and all the rushed re signings make sense. If they had KL on board, I doubt they would have prolonged LMAs deal and given some charity contracts away like they did with PG and PM

Tanking teams also don’t play veterans heavy minutes over their youth. No reason Derrick White should be in the d’league in a tanking team and no reason not to play him over some veterans in this team. They wouldn’t have reupped Pau and Mills and it would have been time to ship off Tony’s expiring deal for assets. People have no idea what a real tank job is.

Tanking teams don't run up the kind of first half record the Spurs did. Tanking at mid-season would be a really incompetent tank-job. :toast

Anyone that thinks Kawhi, while collecting almost $20 million this season, is faking his injury might want to consider the ramifications of ripping off a team for that kind of money. As discussed in another thread, Although his absence has been tough, I’m more concerned about the future. He should come back this season, but nobody knows for sure. It’s cost the Spurs a lot more than his salary him being out. The revenue lost will be especially bad if we don't have a good run in the playoffs.

Yep, anyone who thinks Kawhi is sitting out for fun or the conspiracy tards who think this is some kind of play by PATFO are retarded. Star player would never sit out or let himself be held out just for funsies

:tu In this Lost Season, two things (at least) are certain. One is that the Spurs had no plans in the off-season, pre-season or early season to tank; and they are not tanking now. The second certainty is that Kawhi has a real, serious (albeit mysterious) injury.

The only real mystery to me is what Kawhi's thoughts and feelings are about the Spurs team/organization.

I agree completely.

I am really concerned for Kawhi. If he's not back early March, there's almost no point in trying to reintegrate him after. What really concerns me about Kawhi is... do you remember Tiago's calf issue. He had a bad calf going into the 2014/15 season, he saw specialists. At one point they thought it was related to a back problem. Bottom line, they never solved it and he has since (this offseason) come out saying he had always battled through pain and since that 2015 season he basically played with varying levels of pain whenever he was on the court. He was never 100%. Playing made his pain flare up to the point where he said it affected his daily activities, sitting and doing normal things... (does that not remind you of Kawhi barely being able to climb some stairs?)... That bad calf and sore back, basically retired Tiago. I hope to be wrong, but this injury just doesn't give me a good feeling.

Yes, I remember Tiago's injury well, and for a Spurs fan it feels like a horrible harbinger for Kawhi.

In retrospect, Tiago's injury may have been the impetus for the team's subsequent moves that have resulted in the team we have today. Would PATFO been less inclined to dump a healthy Tiago? Would a healthy Tiago have caused the Spurs to focus on a different FA or FAs than LMA?

It's an obvious hypothetical but not unfounded.
I remember one of the things that Pop said in 2015 when they asked him what impressed him about Lamarcus Aldridge and made the team want to pursue him aggressively as a FA... Pop said, he was always impressed that Lamarcus carried a very heavy burden for Portland. He played heavy minutes each season and they asked him to do a lot for the team. It always stuck with me that durability, playing heavy minutes and ability to carry a large burden were the reasons Pop cited first. Do you remember that interview?

The concern might have been that Timmy needed rest games through the season, Tiago was completely undependable and Kawhi would not have a quality big man to share a heavy mintues and workload burden...

Sorry, I don't remember that interview. Your memory for such things is far better than mine. : toast

I do remember Tiago's pretty much taking LMA out of the prior playoff series. A healthy Tiago was an excellent, agile big defender - even if he was pretty awkward on offense. Haha.

tholdren won't mention a serious trade proposal because when it turns out to be a dud it'll be brought up all the time (apo). In case people haven't noticed, several high level players have been traded the last year + that would be a good barometer of the trade market (which isn't very good).
