Despite $8.7 Billion Spent on Afghan Drug War, More Drugs Than Ever

SIGAR, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, released a report (https://www.sigar.mil/pdf/quarterlyreports/2018-01-30qr.pdf#page=ii)

The United States has appropriated $8.7 billion for counternarcotics efforts since 2002, but more Afghan land was under opium-poppy cultivation in 2017 than ever before.

According to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, cultivation levels increased 63% from the previous year to 328,000 hectares.

Potential opium production levels increased 87% to 9,000 tons from 2016.

Eradication levels also increased from the prior year’s results, but the 750 hectares eradicated barely registered against the cultivation figure.

Afghanistan seems to have a drug problem:

In addition to exporting opiates, Afghanistan suffers from widespread illegal drug use.

A U.S.-funded 2015 survey estimated approximately 11% of the population would test positive for drugs.

Drug use among men, women and children is among the highest documented worldwide.

The report also discusses the astronomical cost of the bombing missions against drug labs. What good is it doing?

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime’s (UNODC) released its annual country opium survey in November 2017.

Cultivation increased 63% from 201,000 hectares in 2016 to 328,000 hectares, while production increased 87% from 4,800 to 9,000 tons.

(One hectare is roughly 2.5 acres. The total area under opium cultivation approaches the size of Rhode Island.)

All major poppy-growing provinces exhibited strong increases in cultivation.

In Helmand, cultivation increased 79%, accounting for nearly half of the total national increase.

It's well known that they are getting Chinese and Russian arms. The Pashtuns control most of the opium trade. It's not like they have no money.

The war is not going to be won militarily. It is going to be won culturally. The other ethnic groups now look very unfavorably on the Pashtun and their Taliban.

Looks like China is taking over

Worried about militants sneaking into a restive Chinese region from war-torn Afghanistan, Beijing is in talks with Kabul over the construction of a military base, Afghan officials say, as it seeks to shore up its fragile neighbour.

The army camp will be built in Afghanistan’s remote and mountainous Wakhan Corridor, where witnesses have reported seeing Chinese and Afghan troops on joint patrols.

Amid Little Scrutiny, US Military Ramps Up In Afghanistan

The U.S. is bolstering its military presence in Afghanistan, more than 16 years after the war started. Is anyone paying attention?

Consider this: At a Senate hearing this past week on top U.S. security threats, the word “Afghanistan” was spoken exactly four times, each during introductory remarks.

In the ensuing two hours of questions for intelligence agency witnesses, no senator asked about Afghanistan, suggesting little interest in a war with nearly 15,000 U.S. troops supporting combat against the Taliban.

It’s not as if the war’s end is in sight.

Just last month the bulk of an Army training brigade of about 800 soldiers arrived to improve the advising of Afghan forces.

Since January, attack planes and other aircraft have been added to U.S. forces in Afghanistan.

But it’s not clear that the war, which began in October 2001, is going as well as the U.S. had hoped seven months after President Donald Trump announced a new, more aggressive strategy.

the administration has made major improvements in military tactics and plans for developing Afghan forces but has “done nothing to deal with civil and political stability.”

The administration “not only faces a deteriorating security situation, it has no clear political, governance, or economic strategy to produce Afghan stability,” Cordesman said. In his view, the U.S. military has been assigned a “mission impossible” in Afghanistan.

US uses drone strike on Al Queada in Southern Libya. First timer here... Admitted anyway.

Looks like Russia and the US,which rule the air over Syria, are going to let Turkey have sway in Northern Syria. Not backing the PKK and Kurds.

If Iran tries to mess with Israel from southern Syria, its clear a Israel will strike. So the split up of Syria continues. The unspoken borders are becoming clearer. Iran is established in the capital and other important cities. Southern Syria better not have Hezoballah acting out. And Nothern Syria will require dealing with Turkey. We will see what other various rebel groups will be left with.

Posting this here as we will continue the mess in Afghanistan.
