Poll: Is San Antonio doing the "right" or "wrong" thing w.r.t the Saints

I'm curious. I suspect there'e mostly support for this, but I'd be interested in seeing the percentages given that this board is a highly enriched population when in comes to sports issues.

Since Benson is probably just holding New Orleans and the NFL ransom with threats of moving to San Antonio, and would be in Los Angeles if he actually intended to move the team, San Antonio should not expect to have any moral high ground upon which to stand when someone lures the Spurs away ten years from now.

I am normally a lurker and not a poster, but a lot of what is being said is starting to bug me.

SA might be too good for the NFL. I am more then happy to spend my money on the Spurs and the NBA.

Remember the Jerry Seinfeld joke about rooting for a uniform? Free agency in the NFL has reduced the league to a punch line. Granted the NFL has better competition, but it was achieved by reducing great teams into good teams instead of bettering the worst teams. Where are the great NFL dynasties of the past?

I love how the NBA encourages players to remain loyal to a team via the CBA. What other league has done that for their fans? I’ve heard fans boo Stern at Spurs games and I have never understood it. Stern is by far the best professional sports commissioner. He wants to earn my money with the best product he can produce.

Can you say that about Paul Tagliabue?

I know Tagliabue and the NFL do not care about their players like the NBA does. At least basketball players’ contracts are guaranteed.

Do you know NFL players contracts are not guaranteed if they are injured? Every football player is one hit away from living off his last signing bonus.

Compare how the Hornets temporary move to Oklahoma City has been handled by Stern as opposed to the Saints temporary move to San Antonio? Stern has handled it with professionalism and class even though the Hornets ownership is dubious at best (remember how they were cooking their attendance numbers to justify their abandonment of Charlotte for New Orleans).

I am sure all parties involved know that the Hornets could move (if the conditions dictated) to OKC or another city after this season. I am sure OKC would love to have an NBA team just like SA would love to have an NFL team. I’m sure bigger cities then OKC would love to have an NBA team (KC has plans for a new NBA level arena, just like LA is open minded to planning for a new NFL stadium). I know George Shinn would move the Hornets if a better economic opportunity presented itself (Benson has given more loyalty to NO then Shinn ever gave to Charlotte). I am sure the leadership and citizens of OKC would make a pitch to keep the Hornets if the situation presented itself (just as the leadership and citizens of SA are making a pitch to keep the Saints since the situation is presenting itself.)

At this point, citizens of SA need to be the bigger man and remember we already have the best run franchise in the best run league of any sport in the nation. Let’s not lower ourselves to the levels of others. Unfortunately I think our fine mayor has fallen to the temptation of lowering himself to Tagliabue’s level even though his intentions are good.

Simply put, let’s hope we (citizens of SA) worry about doing what’s best in the best possible way. If the Saints sincerely want to move here, we should work with them, just like we would with any other business who is considering relocating to south central Texas. If they don’t, we should continue to share our Texan hospitality and wish them the best of luck when they leave.

I'm sorry for what happened in New Orleans. But I do not see the city doing wrong in attempting to get an NFL team that IS up for grabs. It is within reach more now than it probably ever will. The truth is NO, as many have pointed out before, has to focus on rebuilding a city, I don't know how NO building a new arena right now can possibly fit into that equation with what they have been thru and what they have to do to rebuild the community itself.

If San Antonio didn't and never pursued this team now, ten years later poeple would talk about how we blew our chance to ever get a team. Plain and simple. In the meantime, LA would have the Saints while we were the idiots. Ten years from now.
