This is the playoff opener against the Wolves in 2001. The Spurs won this one 87-82, and of course this was one of the many legendary battles that Tim Duncan and Kevin Garnett had. Here are their stat lines from the game:

Tim Duncan: 33 points, 15 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks, 1 steal
Kevin Garnett: 25 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steal, 1 block

I love when Tim does that retard dance with his tongue out after icing the game with a bank shot. :lol

Yeah, that was a classic. Before I posted this, I was looking for their matchup in 2004 where Tim thoroughly outplayed KG. He had 36 points and 20 rebounds, compared to 22 and 10 for KG.

The pleasure is all mine......sorry about the resolution in some of these videos. They were the best I could find.

As for seeing a young TD, I watched him in all 4 years at Wake Forest as well as all 19 of his seasons with the Spurs. He's my all-time favorite player. You can definitely count on me posting more of his games and highlights from when he was young, including some of his games from college eventually.

I'm sure I'll have enough material to get us all the way to the start of next season.

But Derek Anderson. Man, I had hopes for him. That's what I get for counting on a Kentucky player. :lol

He got viciously taken out by Juwan Howard on a dunk attempt and wasn't re-signed. It's not like he sat out an entire year with an injury no doctors could find and fled to LA.

Post up nba was a different beast in that era.. quality bigs were the show. Garnett (who I had not seen play in his youth either), also put on a good show. The twin towers were just amazing.

I still remember watching him bitch about his contract in the postgame show right after getting swept.

Not even Mills gives up season high performances to whoever he is guarding every night like Anderson did. Dude could really put the ball on the floor but it always felt like he gave up more than he produced here.

Yep. DA thought he was too good for the Spurs and faded into oblivion after he left for greener pastures. KL's uncle should look at DA before wanting to pull Kawhi from the System.

If there's any truth to that rumor.

I mean, the guy played 11 seasons, so I have to give him some credit, although he barely moved the needle in any significant way.

That '01 team was gutless worms in the most profound way... don't know if ST was around but this team folded like a quivering pink vagina in the cold whenever there was adversity or purple and gold jerseys anywhere in sight.

'01 and '11 seasons were actually very similar in a lot of ways

The '01 Spurs could barely get the ball over the timeline against the Lakers pressure. Drafting Parker changed everything, at least in that regard.

Our guard rotation was horrid in that little era (old AJ/Daniels/injured DA/old Porter, Kerr who was just a shooter by that point), true, but Parker consistently curled into the fetal position against the kobe era Lakers pretty much his entire career.

Juwan did us a solid. There would have been no money for Manu had they kept DA at market value.

You mean Rasho and Malik would have been traded sooner or Rashos never would have been given 48 million.

Spurs would have paid Manu before them 2.

Spurs actually low balled Derek and offered 28 mil over 4 yrs.. oppose to the 6 yr 48 mil dollar deal he got from Portland.

Derek had to take that because he worried about his knee.

More seats as Alamodome had double the amount of seats as ATT, a lot of cheaper options too.

Several playoff games in the dome had 34K+ in attendance.

This made me wonder how was the attendance in 2001...Well, Spurs were #1 in the whole league.

I know this is a stat that depends on many variables but they're #12 in 2018...

The Alamodome could seat over 37K people. Basic supply/demand principles as there were cheaper and more affordable seats available because of how many there were. That was a big reason why Spurs led in attendance when they played at the dome.

Now I think the max capacity is right over 18,700K at the AT&T.

If you go back, Spurs ranked 11th in 2003 and always have been between 9th and 14th the past 15 years in the smaller AT&T.

Not hard to figure out.

I've said "many variables" capacity is obvious one of them.

But people talked in this thread about how many fans were, crowd's loud...I wanted to know what were the numbers then and now.

During the playoffs at the dome, over 35K people would fill the Alamodome. So of course it was louder.

I went to many regular seasons games during those years as a 12-16 yr old kid. Me and my buddies would buy 7 dollar tickets.

I don't remember it being really loud unless it was a big game on TNT or NBC. With those games the attendance would always be up.

Most games vs. middle of the road or bad teams, you could buy 7 dollar tickets and move down to the bottom 10 rows by halftime with no real problems as there were always empty seats. I was a kid then and this was a norm for us.
