View Full Version : Kawhi’s Sister Says He is Still Hurt; Kawhi’s Mom Was in Attendance Yesterday

Didn’t think there were enough Kawhi threads so I figured I’d create one.

Kawhi’s sister, who runs his IG fan account, had this to say. Notice she mentions the “business side of things.” Definitely trying to protect that $219M.

Also saw from multiple people on Twitter that his mom was in attendance at yesterday‘s game. Take it for what it’s worth, but they said she was celebrating the W.

Can't imagine the autistic mute will turn down $70 million extra if Drunkford and company come at him with the supermax.

:flag:
Hope the dude recovers. He wants that supermax but he for sure needs to be 100 % healthy to get that dough. It’s in both parties (Kiwi and Spurs) that he recovers so not much can be said about it. His career is on the line.

are we sure that Kawhi's "sister" isn't just his alter ego?

It's going to be ironic when kawhi's "I won't jepordize my super Max by returning" turns into no super Max because he took it to far

It's going to be ironic when kawhi's "I won't jepordize my super Max by returning" turns into no super Max because he took it to far
More reason to not offer it. And I don't think the Spurs will until he get his ass back on court..

He's been a zero locker room presence. I remember that multi-part round table discussion that featured Pop, Tim, Manu, and Tony after 2014. They really didn't have anything to say about Kawhi, other than he never talks.

If all of this was to secure the SuperMax, they were 180 degrees off. If he had tried to fight through it and play this season, the Spurs FO could have offered it to him, and bought insurance. By showing distrust in the Spurs, he's engendered the same from them. It's human nature. They cannot offer him the SuperMax when HE says he's not healthy, and they cannot let him walk next summer, which he will without the SuperMax. Therefore, a trade is on the horizon.

Hes trying to avoid what happened to IT, dude fought through the injury just to lose in the playoffs and then have surgery in the off season, and missed the opportunity of getting a MAX deal. I don't think the Celtics would have gave him one but still was in the discussion of him getting one. This entire forum was on their knees for Kawhi last season and in the playoffs. He obviously got banged up last season in the playoffs with his ankles multiple times still tried playing through it and just couldnt. Then got the quad injury working hard in the off season tries to come back in the middle of the season and clearly didn't look right. Why in the world would he come back this season when it was clear they weren't going to win anything and injuring himself more before the biggest pay day of his life, Kawhi is not going anywhere.

Well he could be just playing it safe and will not play this season to heal 100%. The team must have asked him to not sit on the bench because it's a distraction. I have a feeling he is afraid to play for fear of a lingering injury with his quad.

However the Spurs should explore a trade with Lakers if they can get Ball, Ingram and Kuzma, 1st round pick and take on Deng's contract. Reason being this could turn into being injured every single season with this quad injury. If Magic wants Kawhi that bad and is willing to take the risk it might be worth it for Spurs long term even if Kawhi goes on to be healthy starting next season. Spurs could wind up with plenty of young talent to develop for Kawhi.

My guess would be Spurs will offer Kawhi the supermax out of loyalty.

Unfortunately for him, he's not getting that payday. He'll take about a $35M haircut in guaranteed money losing the SuperMax because of his lack of trust. If he leaves the organization where they trade him, that's one contract year and another $40M of guaranteed money gone.

The Spurs have a HISTORY of conservative injury return protocols, as well as taking care of players when they get older, making up for some of the pay they couldn't get on the front side of their careers on the back side. By saying he's worried about being IT'd, that says that he doesn't trust an organization built on trust. That broken trust will lead to his departure.

Most likely spot on.

And again, something transpired in the immediate aftermath of that player's only meeting that caused him to separate himself from the team.

And seeing how I wasn't there, I can only go off player reactions that while it may not have been as confrontational as was reported (hearing loud voices through the door, etc), something uncomfortable happened. Such that players have hinted that he should keep rehabbing rather than be around the team (Mills, Pau, and Ginobili have all hinted at this).

And since then, Kawhi has gone radio silent.

He either does not want to he around his teammates, or was asked to stay away while the season was ongoing if he wasn't going to play, or both.

Either way, neither scenario sends a positive vibe about, not only about what happened that day, but also what the future of the relationship holds.

Gasol is only under contract for two more years and his good games aren't uncommon, he's a high IQ playmaking bigman who can shoot. It's maybe not worth the money but it's not a bad tool to have in your belt. Mills is overpaid but it's not a franchise-destroying contract. However having a "superstar" who can't play half the season, who's making supermax money, and can't play at a superstar level anymore will put this team into a long dark age.

Agree

Most likely to the spurs advantage. He can't get supermax anywhere else and spurs have very good reason to not offer the full supermax... 40M is a nice cushion plus the fact that he would only want to be traded to a team he would want to extend with puts even more money in jeopardy.

I have a bad feeling for Kawhi that this injury is career altering at best and he's trying desperately to keep it secret and/or hope it fully resolves and not risk his next contract....problem is, he and his PR crew are putting it in jeopardy anyway with how they are handling it. I mean not showing any support for your team, not giving updates, and then trotting your sister out on Twitter to defend you? Pretty weak

That these are the players jobs/careers and even though they are athletes and it’s not apples to apples, that taking care of yourself to secure the most money you can is what everyone would do in their own jobs.

So the business side of the nba is you don’t put yourself at risk if you aren’t 100% in a situation like Kawhi is in where he’s due one of the largest contracts in nba history.

:lmao At people still making definitive declarations.

Unless he requests a trade after whatever discussions inevitably take place or after doing inevitable due diligence, they're not satisfied medically, why wouldn't they offer the super max (with protections)? The likely alternative is getting on the treadmill of mediocrity.

They don't have to offer it on July 1st. As long as they're on the same page by then, they can slow play this, similar to the Aldridge situation. Get him back around the team in open gym, through training camp and into a few preseason games. If all systems are a go, offer it then.

Sure. But it's hard to relate when most of the players are making more in a year or two than 99% of people make their whole life. More so for the superstars. Leonard isn't going to find many that are sympathetic to him sitting out and getting paid $19,000,000 just so he can make $30,000,000 or whatever it is.

And I'd further add that to earn the supermax, you should be a badass-play-through-the-pain guy.

All that that being said, from an individual standpoint, Leonard may be doing exactly what's right for him.

I've been vocal about Kawhi being a bitch for not speaking or attending games, but of course the Spurs should offer him the supermax and try to work shit out:lol at the end of the day, elite talent wins in this league..there's a massive gap between good and great players..

This nigga was a Black superhero to me. I preached to my kids all the time be more like Kawhi, an Not these so called superstars being divas. But now, my kids make fun of me an the Spurs. Seriously!!! Again I'm not upset if he truly believed he's hurt, but no one is 100% in the playoffs. An he's damn sure getting paid for his services. An to add insult, if you knew you would be rehabbing for the rest of the yr, why not come out an say it. Be there for your team in the playoffs by supporting them. He could rehab in the summer. I seen someone say Kawhi is dead to them. I wouldn't go that far, but I'm truly not a Kawhi fan anymore. Idc if the Spurs resign him. He can't be trusted in my eyes! He'll sit out a whole season as soon as he signs that contract to force a trade. Fuck him

When is the cutoff point for them being able to offer the Supermax? Can they offer it all the way up until just before the season starts? I don't think Kawhi would be too happy with that, though. If they waited that long, he could ask out before then.

I would trade him for a number of players.

People forget how awful he was against the Clippers and Thunder. in 15 and 16

I didn't. I was all over him after the Clippers series for not being mentally strong and fading in those last few games, but I let it go because the second half of the season was the first time he was asked to be "the man."

I was also upset with him in the Thunder series. I can't remember if it was game 2 or game 5, but at the end of one of those games that the Spurs had a shot to win it, Kawhi didn't want anything to do with the ball. I thought, Kawhi, if you want to be a Superstar and get to the level you want to get to, you gotta demand the ball with the game on the line, not let Tony Parker and Patty Mills take shots to win it. I was still a huge fan of his after the series, but I said if he wanted to get to the next level that he always talks about (being one of the all-time greats), then he needed to get mentally stronger at the end of big games/playoff games. I think he did it last season and got there, but we didn't get to see this season if he could build off of that and maintain it. Kawhi getting to the level he showed last season is also the reason I'm mad about the possibility of him leaving or trading him. He finally got to that level that he wanted to get to, but then to lose him straight after, especially if he's healthy, is really going to piss me off. The Spurs put a lot into him, and if he were to bail on the team, then I'm not sure anyone is going to be too happy about that (the fans and the Spurs).

I've been vocal about Kawhi being a bitch for not speaking or attending games, but of course the Spurs should offer him the supermax and try to work shit out:lol at the end of the day, elite talent wins in this league..there's a massive gap between good and great players..

You're right about talent. The issue, though, is that Kawhi may not be able to be that elite talent anymore, or if he is, he may not be able to do it long enough or for as many games. TD21 (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=908) threw in the caveat of a supermax "with protections", but there are two problems with this. One can be seen by looking at the potential contract breakdown of such a deal:

The Spurs could potentially lower the amount they owe further by making some of the salary non-guaranteed, but this protects against a Kawhi who is cut only. It's possible that Kawhi is hurt to the point that he'll never be a great player while also being able to be a very good player in a lesser role for many years to come. I think the Spurs would want that Kawhi regardless, but is that guy worth an average of $37M per year? Of course not. The Spurs would save $32 Million, which is noting to sneeze at, but that would still be more than the regular Bird-max.

This is obviously pure speculation. Only a couple of rumors have suggested Kawhi's injury may hinder the rest of his career. It's something to consider, though, because as I mentioned, it does explain a lot of what we've heard. If it's true, then this situation is really complicated, because there's no way to pay him both for what he used to be and for what he currently is at the same time. The Spurs truly believing the Kawhi of old is gone for good means they can't reasonably give him the deal, regardless of championship windows or whatever. It's a franchise-defining deal, and they can't afford to get it wrong.

EDIT: As I never did say what the other "problem" is. Kawhi being offered a max without it being fully guaranteed no matter what might be looked at as an insult. It's going to be a status thing for Curry, Harden and Russ to have those deals while Leonard doesn't. From everything we know, it would seem like a decent compromise that might even be in Leonard's favor, but it's easy to spin this as SA "trying to get him for cheap".

cutewizard

Pretty weak

The more I think about it, the more I agree with this post.

Spurs would have gone home in 4 THIS Series if he doesn't step down. Regrettable the death of Ms. Pop, but that's what it comes down to. He was going to go home early with Paddy guarding Klay all series, Kyle playing barely 5-6 minutes, Dijon playing 10 minutes while he played 25 minutes of Davis (something he didn't like to do even in the regular season) and 20 minutes to Bryn while both were shooting blanks and oh Bryn guarding Durant for good measure.

If the Spurs aren't willing to offer him the max because his quad got worse in the summer, as Danny Green said, we can agree that Spurs doctors mishandled his injury in some way.

Was Kawhi ready to play when he already did it in mid-season and had a setback? A possible career-altering injury and they cleared him to play instead of resting Kawhi the season and looking for the treatments he didn't receive in the summer?

The trusting issues are never about just one side.

To me, it's a no-brainer to offer the supermax if Kawhi wants to stay in San Antonio especially if PAFTO believe he will get full healthy, which per their actions, they already believe he's good enough to play now. It would be a disaster to trade such a talent and I don't care how many players and draft picks we get back. The likelihood of getting another transcendent player in the deal would be very low. So the top priority should be to repair the relationship and offer the supermax. There are no other options unless Kawhi is adamant about getting out of SA, which is unlikely given he set the win percentage record through 400 games played. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Nah. Pop does adjust... Sometimes longer than we would have liked, but he does make match-up adjustments. It's quite possible they were following the game plan he had anyway, who knows. Those coaches do give lots of input so it's not like a dictatorship.

I actually liked their game 2 strategy, trapping Klay, he really didn't get going until late in the game. 4-28 from 3 for us tho :bang

On the flip side, we know that NOT to be true because in the only interview that Kawhi gave in early March, he himself said he was very close and already doing 4v4.

So if there was a setback, it happened under Kawhi’s doctors watch and had nothing to do with SA. His doctors found nothing different, didn’t recommend surgery and even tough he was close to playing nearly 2 months ago, he never got cleared under his doctors watch.

I think Pop's done pretty well in the playoffs recently. You make it sound like he's been getting knocked out in the first round on the regular or something, but he's only failed to make it to the semis once in the Kawhi era until this year (presumably). He adjusted as well as he could last year, but the team just had too many injuries to even win one game against GS. Against Houston, he did a great coaching job.

The trusting issues are never about just one side.

You have to look at the history. The Spurs have ZERO record of rushing players back or even letting them play injured. Pop probably cost SA the Utah series in 98 because he wouldn't let TD play one game on a minor ankle sprain. He also held him out of the 2000 playoffs after he had meniscus smoothing minor scope surgery weeks before. THE SPURS DON'T TREAT PLAYERS LIKE MEAT. Never have, never will. Some people's blind PATFO hate causes them to project, but it's not true.

Now what I CAN see is that with Kawhi's china doll history, and games missed over his career that the Spurs wanted safeguards built in to any offer. That's just smart business. His best season of durability was his rookie year, and he played 64/66 games in the lockout shortened season. Other than that, his reliability has been questionable. He has averaged 66.8 games per season since, and that's throwing out this year's 9 game season, which I consider to be a medical hold out. You can't break the bank for a player who only plays 81% of your games, especially not the SuperMax. That guy has to be a horse, and Kawhi isn't.

If he is dictating where he wants to go why don't you send him where he wants to go. There is still a 50/50 chance that kawhii might pull a Dwight and leave the Lakers after one season. if you think about it You guys can end up with Julius Randle in a sign and trade and possibly Brandon Ingram on the wing with a Cleveland #1 draft pick. Randle and Ingram under Pop will thrive with LMA and the spurs will still make the playoffs next season....

It’s time for a clean break from Kawhi. He can never be counted on to be 100% again. For the rest of his career, at any moment, the quad can flare up and he can be out for a long time, even during the middle of a playoff run. Not to mention all the drama he’s caused this year.

Just get the best deal available and move on. It’s time for the franchise to turn the page as a whole anyway.

I'm lost... What drama did he cause? And that's a silly argument... ANY player's injury can flare up anytime... Should GS get rid of curry because of his ankle? How about Philly ditch Ben Simmons too? He also was out for an entire year

One missed his rookie year and still has his entire rookie deal and RFA period to play out. The other has a player option in 12 months and can leave the Spurs high and dry(and even if he does stay he can be tainted goods).

And even if he isnt tainted goods, the team around him is garbage and we'd be in the second round and out instead of the first. So why keep a player who is injury prone, lacks the ability to be a leader, and would require a near complete team overhaul to get back into championship contention with?

Directly or indirectly, his injury is the story of the Spurs season. And if you don’t think there is / was drama, you’re being naive.

Kawhi allows his family members to deal with his affairs way too much.

Although his mum showing up for the game is a sign of support to pop & the spurs. Credit to her.

Is not true because he had other setback under his own doctors? We read articles and watched TV shows where guys said they found "something.

Also, those doctors already DID something different that Spurs' doctors, they didn't clear him to play and opted to continue rehabbing him

Edit: There is a "there's a level of unpredictability involved with rehabilitation from quadriceps tendinopathy" that makes it difficult to clear a player is he's not 100%.

Having a great record on something doesn't mean that a professional is infallible. In every pro league, injury-mistakes happened.

Curry, AD, Wall..There are many super-max players as franchise-guys who are injury-prone.

AD isn’t on a SuperMax yet. Like Kawhi, he didn’t meet the criteria until he was out of his rookie deal. Washington should have traded Wall. They’re going nowhere fast, and now have that albatross contract. It’s almost like KG in Minny. His contract is so huge, they can’t get him any more help, so they’re stuck. Curry’s team has 3other all stars to backstop the team when he’s out. Not really a similar situation at all. His missing time doesn’t have the adverse affect that a one star team would feel.

Yes, no one has said anything, but this except media people stirring the pot. It's makes them crazy that Kawhi doesn't give them anything. Pop said it succinctly, "He's in New York trying to get healthy."

Pretty amazing that we have a guy with a heart condition, carrying the team to the playoffs while our number 1 option basically peaced- out in January because he felt discomfort.

Didn't watch the Warriors-Pelicans game tonight but I heard Draymond man handled Davis and guarded him for most of the game with single coverage. Goes to show you how effective LMA was in that series considering how the Warriors had to double him a bunch of times and only had Draymond guard him for 5 minute stretches during games.

Think he played well against GSW all year. His numbers in the playoffs are particularly eye-popping; 23.6 ppg on 16 FGA, 9 RPG, 2.5 APG, 8 FTA, 96% FT
Got to the line to make up for only hitting 45% from the field (41-42 from the line) and lead the team in Net Rtg with +9.

Raymond is showing his real position. He is truly an SF, and is much more effective guarding face up players than he is post up players. Davis is really an outsized SF.
