http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/23349261/carmelo-anthony-oklahoma-city-thunder-says-come-bench-returns

"Yeah, I'm not sacrificing no bench role," Anthony said. "That's out of the question."

Anthony is owed $28 million on the final year of his contract, but he can opt out with an early termination clause. The expectation from nearly everyone around the league was that Anthony would opt in to the final year and remain with the Thunder.

"I think everybody knows that I've sacrificed kind of damned near everything, family, moving here by myself, sacrificed my game for the sake of the team, and was willing to sacrifice anything and everything in order for this situation to work out."

Asked how he thought this season went, Anthony lowered his voice a bit. "Interesting," he said.

No way in hell does he opt out. He would have to be stupid do so. I can't see a team offering more money to him over 4 years that is greater than the 1 year he has left on his contract.

[T]he Jazz outscored the Thunder by 14.5 points per 100 possessions, and OKC surrendered a defensive rating of 110.0 with Anthony on the floor in the postseason, according to NBA (http://bleacherreport.com/nba).com's stats database (http://stats.nba.com/team/1610612760/onoffcourt-advanced/?sort=NET_RATING&dir=-1).

And then there's this: When Anthony was off the floor, the Thunder outscored the Jazz by a team-best 13.5 points per 100 possessions and posted a stellar defensive rating of 98.2.

spurs don't need another tony.

If he'd check reality, I'd have a contract ready to go. Judging by these quotes, not a chance. Too bad, he'd be one ego-check, Kawhi drama squelching, and a solid offseason away from a shot at a ring.

Yep. And now he's washed up and clearly headed down the Allen Iverson path of not knowing that he's washed up so he refuses a diminished role.

There is no player I'd want less on this team than Melo.

This. I’ve never really liked the guy. Not a big fan. Ball dominant player who doesn’t play well with his team. Russ will be heading this way also, stats padding. But I was surprised how Pops was able to make Gay play defense and fit within Spurs game (see his play on KD), likewise LMA arguably playing the best 2way game of his career. I don’t know

BatManu20
04-29-2018, 08:03 AM
Obviously a troll thread but I will say that Melo is beyond washed and needs to retire. He’ll play at least one more year as he’s owed a ridiculous $28M next season, but he’s going to be hard-pressed to find a team that will pay him much of anything after that, especially not as a starter, and I don’t know if his ego will be able to handle it. Thus, I see retirement for him as a real possibility after next season.

duncan2k5
04-29-2018, 08:32 AM
Hell no... Even if we would be better with him right now with the roster we have, just him being on the team lowers our ceiling and would prevent us from winning no matter how much we improve the roster in the future... He will NEVER win a championship being a starter

He played well for OKC but he just sits out and jacks 3's up and goes inside for the occasional rebound or jumpshot. I think he could do well alongside Kawhi, LMA though. He's not worth that contract though so I wouldn't try and acquire him.

per reddit:

Carmelo Anthony was last in "Distance Run Per Game" in the 2017-18 season, averaging 2.01 miles per game. That means players like Embiid, DeAndre, and Dwight traveled more on the court per game, while playing *fewer* minutes as well!

Carmelo was also 4th-worst in "Avg Speed Per Game", trailing just Harden, Gasol, and Cousins.

Melo is probably a good deal better than he's played recently. But eventually, you are how you perform. The Melo that was there in 2012 or whenever he helped the team get to the second round was an offensively-slanted version of LMA from this year. Anything like that guy would obviously be a huge boon for the team. But the net-negative loafer/chucker isn't worth it. However, if he somehow comes on the market and could be had for a reasonable deal, I wouldn't be against making the attempt. The Spurs missed out on some important scoring talent by passing on a number of "non-Spur" players who went for min deals or otherwise small contracts. The team isn't in a position to consistently turn up their noses to those types of players. Not saying Melo is an option, but not every player with a bad rep can be off the table.

He's not a winning player anymore. He doesn't want to be a roleplayer, he is going to end up throwing others under the bus and would not accept benching without drama. He's going to be hard to fit in anywhere. I don't think there's any way PATFO considers him unless they want to tank.

he fits in well with russ tbh... they can both go after their individual goals all they want (money for melo, stats for wb) and dont care if they get in each others way from winning. match made in heaven tbh. might as well hire jason kidd as head coach... somebody else who just wants spotlight more than wins

Wade is never leaving Miami, they love him there.

Speaking of that, a lot of people on this site think the Spurs can attract anyone. That's not the case. SA sucks balls compared to cities like Miami, much less comparing it to living in NYC, LA, Chicago, Boston, or other world class cities. Believe what you want, but living in Stone Oak or the Dominion isn't cutting it for today's star (for the most part). It's a supply and demand thing, and you take what you can get in a small town. And with an awesome coaching staff, that's basically all you need. See the Jazz as an example.
