I started subscribing to Track & Field News magazine in the 60's, I have 12 issues a year since then, I own...Who Is Who In Track And Field..the book. I've been to at least 1000 track meets in my life, talking HS, JC, NCAA, World Class.

When it comes to them blues I subscribed to Blues Revue/Living Blues/Blues Access magazines and own 12 big books on them blues and over 7000 blues CD, most with some story about what is on the CD.

That is what SFS is up against, yep, the boy stands.....0.....chance.

So let's get this trivia contest started. I will ask five questions, when the boy runs and hides it will be over and all of you will feel stupid for voting for a know nothing. Especially while knowing who the real blues/track expert here really is.

Former Heisman winner Billy Cannon has died.

I saw Billy Cannon play on TV many times. The first time was the 1959 Sugar Bowl. In Cannon's third pro season, he had a serious back injury and was never an effective runner again. In 1964 Cannon went to the Oakland Raiders, Al Davis wanted him, and played fullback, blocking for Clem Daniels.

The Raiders switched Cannon to tight end and he was the best in the AFL at the position (Cannon has the distinction of being All-AFL at both RB and TE) in 1967 as the Raiders won the AFL title and made the Super Bowl, losing to Lombardi's Packers. Cannon was on the Houston Oilers 1960 and 1961 AFL Championship teams. He was the MVP of both the 1960 and 1961 title games. In the 1960 game Cannon took a short pass from George Blanda and went 88 yards for the clinching TD.

Cannon's best verified 100 yard time was 9.5 in the spring of 1959. He considered trying out for the 1960 Olympics as a sprinter but took the big contract from the Houston Oilers.*************

USC's Michael Norman is the cat to watch at the upcoming NCAA's, he broke the indoor WORLD RECORD at 400m and just ran a stunniing 19.84 200m with a slight wind. Then there is Florida's Grant Holloway in the 110hh and long jump and he also runs a great 4x4 leg. Let's see how these two do in the big meet.

Hopefully USC can run their A team in 4x4 relay, if they do (big if) that NCAA 4x4 record could go down.

My fav sports topic is speed in football. So many great sprinters who also played football.

What seperates a fast footballer from a legit sprinter is speed endurance. That ability to sustain/maintain a large % of your max velocity, so they decellerate slower and later in a race. No human can run all out for 100m , that is impossible. So whoever can hold on to their topend longer has the advantage. Footballers don't work on that speed endurance while sprinters are all about speed endurance.

Not unusual at all to see a guy like Deion Sanders, Joey Galloway, Chris Johnson hang with an NCAA sprinter in a 40, but that would be it, the legit sprinters pulling away shortly after the 40.

In 1972 WORLD RECORD 9.9 sprinter Rey Robinson was left off our Olympic 4x1 team, why.......he couldn't do anything but anchor and we had WORLD RECORD 9.9 man Eddie Hart (beat Robinson at the trials) there. So we brought in a guy who never even ran the 100m in Larry Black, he was a 200m cat but ran a ton of relays while at NCC.

More to a 4x1 relay skippy than just 100m times, ok?

Houston McTear averaged over 13 yards a carry as a RB while at Baker HS in Florida. As a HS kid he tied the 100yard World Record at 9.0, and he was just a junior. He landed on the cover of SI. But......dumb as a rock, so he ended up out in Cali at Cerritos JC.

I'm in Fresno at the famous West Coast Relays, the next event on the track the JC 4x2 relay. So while scanning the infield with my binoculars.......what, Houston McTear???? A world class sprinter, one of the two/three fastest humans n the planet in a JC relay, and nobody but me seemed to be noticing this.

Cutting to the chase....

At the final exchange Cerritos is way back there a good 15 yards down, then it began to happen, here comes Houston McTear. The crowd is picking up on what they are seeing, so everyone is now standing, it was as if only one cat was actually sprinting down there. With about 10yards to go McTear has not only passed everyone he is now.....ho hum, nothing to it. The crowd....WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO~~~~~~~ The PA anouncer......ladies and gentlemen.....Houston McTear.

A 100m works like this....

Block clearence/getting out with the gun, then here comes the accelleration phase, this is getting up to topend or max velocity, once that is accomplished now it's sustain/maintain that MV as long as ya can before entering the next phase which is decelleration. No sprinter can run all out for more than 70ish meters, so those able to sustain/maintain a higher % of that MV have an advantage. That is what seperated Usain Bolt from everybody else (other than Tommie Smith) he was able to hold on to that topend longer, he decellerated at a slower pace. This is why 100m sprinters run all those 300's, speed endurance.

Trust me that would be Greek to SFS.


Unless you are a sprinter all that technical mumbo jumbo is boring, whats interesting is the athletes involved and the competition, the times and marks accomplished. Ever notice SFS never talks the actually athletes in the sport, yep.....no clue.

When it comes to pure knowledge of track & field, SFS is miles ahead of anyone I’ve ever known. He doesn’t spam googled lists to try and get people to believe he’s an expert. He actually shares valuable information about the sport, and describes the science of it and has information that you’d only expect from someone in the inner circle of those involved n the sport. He’s way beyond what anyone who can just look on the internet for history and statistics. Stuff like that is available to anyone.
