This was already posted in the think tank (http://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=273543&page=6&p=9410155#post9410155), but I thought it was significant enough to warrant attention on the main Spurs forum.

Athletic wings that could be available at #18:

1. Zhaire Smith, SG (best athlete but unlikely he's available)

2. Gary Trent Jr., SG (would be a solid pick; A higher upside Danny)

3. Troy Brown, SF (long athletic wing; Chip could work his magic on his jumper)

4. Lonnie Walker, SG (little undersized but attacks the rim well & we need that badly)

5. Dzanan Musa, SF (would be a classic Spurs pick)

6. Keita Bates-Diop, SF (oldest of the bunch but well-rounded role player)

7. Chandler Hutchinson, SF (another Senior with a well-rounded game; Seems like a Spurs-type personality)

My guess is they'll choose one of these: Kevin Huerter, Donte DiVincenzo and Jerome Robinson. And I would be happy with that.

FireMicoHalili

They’ve interviewed Miles Bridges and have tried to work out Josh Okogie. Both wings are athletic. Others which may be up for consideration include Shake Milton (personal choice), Zhaire Smith, Isaac Bonga, Hutchison, and Bates-Diop.

If rumors are true, this takes out Huerter or Musa from the conversation. Eliminates Mitchell Robinson as well. Not sure about Huerter since he’s less athletic and just as thin as Musa. Musa is arguably more athletic. Looks like an unproven Steve Novak to me, which I’m sure doesn’t bode well for a lot of Spurs fans. I don’t know why a lot of people are infatuated with this guy but hate Musa. If they wanted a shooter, JP Macura (worked out for the Spurs) is a better choice in the second round. As always I hope they go with the BPA and just address team needs via free agency.

also when did Hutchison’s surname become Hutchinson...

Hopefully that knocks Troy Brown off their board

He's been compared to Kyle Anderson and Evan Turner for his smarts and passing

But he's just a largely below the rim athlete who can't/won't shoot threes at the NBA level just like the other two

That shouldn't keep them from drafting Simon's tbh. He's super young (turns 19 next week), athletic (41 inch max vert, long, and looks like he is already above average shooter on pull ups and catch and shoot. He probably will take a couple of seasons before h is ready to be a rotation player but I think he has a lot of upside and should fit long term with Murray and White in the guard rotation.

Can we get Donte DiVincenzo? 6’5”, 6’6” wingspan but has 42 vertical and hits over 40% from deep. He scores at will and plays great D. Can rebound. I originally like Zhaire athleticism, but this guy is better 2way. Bye Forbes and Mills if we have to trade him to clear cap.

Derrick White, Bryn Forbes, and Brandon Paul are all undersized guards. White and Paul can defend and shoot. DiVincenzo is just going to be a redundancy. Can be a solid pickup but the Spurs can do better and already have similar assets to waste their pick on a white dude who’s going to marginally make a difference for this specific team.

But dang this guy can shoot deep and leap off the building. I really think this guy gets selected in the late first round or early 2nd round but would come out as a steal. He would be a fan favorite too. He dives for the ball, rebound among trees. Hate to compare him to Klay, but he looks automatic and better athlete.

Zhaire has a much higher ceiling. Hes 3 years younger than Donte.

Donte may have a higher floor short term, but Zhaire has a decent short term floor w a high ceiling.

I take Zhaire over Donte.

I like Zhaire athleticism, defense, but lacks shooting sample to know that he can hit them regularly. He does not initiate his own offense. With Mills maybe getting moved to clear cap, Spurs need shooters, and it’s a plus if they can create their own offense. Donte can do everything that Zhaire does, even recorded 42 vertical in the combine, and he can shoot deep 40%, can initiate offense, PNR, spot ups, put backs. It’s remarkable that he’s available at 18 and even late first round. This is a deep draft! Maybe trade down as part of Pau package? Cavs has athletes who cannot shoot. Houston missed 27 straight, but that’s D’Antoni

Sources: Spurs target Villanova's Spellman for a second workout

There is no doubt the Spurs would like to resolve their in-house business involving Kawhi Leonard, but there is additional draft work to be completed.
Though plenty of teams are looking to add a wing player or two in this year's draft, there are some valuable big men to consider, with Villanova University Omari Spellman in the mix.
League sources told the Express-News the Spurs are targeting Spellman for a second workout before next Thursday's NBA Draft.

The freshman forward averaged 10.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in his only season at Villanova, helping the Wildcats capture their second NCAA men's basketball championship in three years while also being named Big East Rookie of the Year.
Scouts point out Spellman's ability to hit the 3-pointer as a significant strength. He shot 43 percent from beyond the arc; is a solid rebounder, and respectable defender.

"(Spellman) is the new era stretch four," an NBA scout told the Express-News. "He's a little bit undersized (6-foot-9), but has a high basketball IQ. He comes from a pro system so he's a guy that can help you immediately. ... He's solid. He'll be a 10-year veteran."

Where did you read that he has a 7 feet wingspan? Most places list him with a 6-8/6-9 wingspan. Euro wings rarely have that type of length.

maybe they target a big who can shoot if they don’t have others players they want. they were also high on jonthay porter who is a little bit similar to spellman ( can shoot, block, rebound)

what i don’t like about This is that spellman is an average athlete with big body fat like porter. Maybe they target two picks with trading some p’auers.

alpha_HaZE

Well, two things;

1) You need an athletic big that can guard guys on the perimeter and switch unless you get someone like Lebron on your team. In which case, you go for an althitic wind that can make the three and defend 1 to 3 in today's NBA.

2) I like Zhaire Smith, not that I know much about prospects, but dude is one of the most athletic players in the draft, in a draft with lots of athletic players. And he can shoot the three.

His athletics Numbers during the combine are average, not good. The difference is that draymond was better Overall. I like spellman, he’s young with potential but if the spurs want an athlete that’s not him imo, that doesn’t mean he’s a bad athlete.

i think his athleticism could still get better, he was pushing 300 pounds like a year ago or something like that I read, his body fat percentage was like around 25%, but for the 18th pick I’m sure there will be better options.
