View Full Version : Trump Directs Pentagon to Create Military Space Force 6th Branch of Military

Chris

President Trump vowed on Monday to make space great again.

Speaking at a meeting of the National Space Council, Trump ordered the Pentagon to immediately establish a national “space force” that would become the sixth branch of the armed forces.

“We are going to have a space force,” Trump said in Washington D.C. “An Air Force and a Space Force. Separate, but equal.”

This is not the first time that Trump has floated the idea of establishing a “space force.” The president mentioned the idea in May during a ceremony at the White House honoring the Army Black Knights college football team.

Trump did not go into details about what military role the so-called “space force” would carry out or who would command it, but he framed space as a national security issue, saying he does not want "China and Russia and other countries leading us."

Pentagon spokeswoman Dana White responded: “We understand the President's guidance. Our Policy Board will begin working on this issue, which has implications for intelligence operations for the Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy. Working with Congress, this will be a deliberate process with a great deal of input from multiple stakeholders.”

The president said the United States will “be the leader by far” in space and is looking to revive the nation's flagging space program by returning the United States to the moon and soon reaching Mars.

Trump was joined by Vice President Pence, who heads the National Space Council, as well as NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine, former astronaut Buzz Aldrin and other members of the council.

Along with the call for the “space force,” Trump also called for a build-up in the long term presence in space, threw his support behind the nascent commercial space travel industry and signed a directive to manage space traffic.

The directive calls for providing a safe and secure environment up in orbit, as satellite traffic increases. It also sets up new guidelines for satellite design and operation, to avoid collisions and spacecraft breakups.

The council's executive secretary, Scott Pace, told reporters before the meeting that space is becoming increasingly congested and current guidelines are inadequate to address the challenge.

Meanwhile, the Repugs plans to fuck over old and/or poor Americans on earth, to "pay for" tax cuts and welfare for the oligarchy.

House Plans Vote to Slash Medicare and Social Security through Balanced Budget Amendment (http://www.medicareadvocacy.org/house-plans-vote-to-slash-medicare-and-social-security-through-balanced-budget-amendment/)

Next week, the House of Representatives is scheduled to vote on a proposal that

will directly impact and harm

Medicare beneficiaries,

Social Security recipients, and

others that rely on critical safety net programs.

The Goodlatte-Walsh Balanced Budget Amendment, H.J.Res.1, will come to a vote Wednesday, July 20.

The bill requires Congress to pass a balanced budget every fiscal year and cap federal spending to 18% of the Gross Domestic Product.[1] (http://www.medicareadvocacy.org/wp-admin/post-new.php#_edn1)

Spending caps, as we have written before, threaten the Medicare and Medicaid programs and hurt beneficiaries and their families.[2] (http://www.medicareadvocacy.org/wp-admin/post-new.php#_edn2)

The proposed Amendment would lead to a drastic 47% spending cut in programs like Social Security and Medicaid by the year 2035.

These proposed cuts would leave spending at levels not seen since 1956,

before the Medicare program existed, and

far below the levels recommended by the Bowles-Simpson Commission

Price per lb moved. All space innovations are derived from being able to get people/cargo/instruments back and forth cheaply. I remember an article talking about the Falcon Heavy and NASA employees were scoffing at the gtought of it. Saying it was impossible but even if it WAS possible it would cost 5x the money involved. Can't find that now.

Give me a budget 100 times what NASA has had I'd be able to do the things they've done. Its pretty easy to hire the right engineers/scientists/etc. when money is no object.

Henry Ford didn't invent the car or the combustable engine. Putting an reliable car out for a cheap price made him more of a pioneer that his peers. Same with Space X

The really important space data is coming from government money and probes.

The booster business has gotten into the private sector and other countries used as contractors.

Once we decided that men into space was way expensive in just learning about astronomy/planet moon science, space exploration became cheaper. A huge expense is incurred trying to keep people alive in space.

any "space wars" contracts will go to the MIC (and the MIC's wealthy investors), will be vastly over budget and over schedule, F-35 style,

iow, just another scam of wealth transfer from lower 4-quintile taxpayers to the wealthy.

Welcome to the stopped clock effect. One of the few things I think Trump is getting right. I have little doubt the motivation is somewhat narcissistic, and I think it is yet another indication of Trumps fossilized thinking that reflects a world that existed in the 1970s, when space was still a big thing to many people. In this, our turning away from space was dumb in many regards.

If one thinks about it, it overlaps a bit with the mission of the air force, but one could argue that it is something of a logical progression even so. Other branches do have some overlap, but not unworkably so. Country started with an army and navy, but had to add a new branch when technology got to the point where having a specialized force seemed necessary.

As noted, launch costs are coming down. There is enough interest in getting off the planet to believe that trend will continue. Simple technological progression. Civilians will be there, just as civilians built ships and explored the seas. with civilians, comes governments and laws.

The military already recognizes that armed conflict isn't going to stop at the upper atmosphere, and has been working on various doctrines interlinking space with other forces. Having a distinct branch will allow some specialization and development. I can probably find the actual Field Manual on space ops if you want. it was interesting reading.

Drawbacks are obvious: more Bureaucratic bloat to the Pentagon, but not more so than we have already. Hopefully it will force the government to be a bit more watchful of the budget and maybe (shocker) audit them?

Dunno. I think the idea gets more flak than it deserves, simply because of who put it out there.

The voyagers, made by NASA are now both beyond our solar system. Voyager 1 has detected, unexpectedly, many more "particles" and energy from our sun than projected. The smaller Space probes made by Nasa and inhabited by sensors from various Universities and entites helped via our government are making smaller probes with better sensors and are giving us so much data we cant keep up with examining it all.

The cool deal is these small probes costs very little to a launch and are not fitted with as much sensing gear, but the gear that is present is very robust, so we are learning quite a lot inexpensively. We cant even keep up with all the data so help is needed.

Putting humans up is just not cost effective, especially right now.

But for right now, a lot of good stuff going on. Yes and for the military freaks, we will be learning more about shooting satellites from other countries, if thats what it comes to.
