Economists in league with big business got good at torturing data to “show” that immigration benefits the economy. But as demonstrated by Harvard University’s George Borjas, one of the nation’s leading economists on the topic, immigration is a net economic benefit to immigrants and to their employers. To workers already here, not so much.
The basic question remains. The pat answer over the past 20 years — “to do the jobs Americans just won’t do” — may seem to have some salience with a 3.9 percent unemployment rate. But that only further raises the question. After at least two decades of wage stagnation and even decline, now that we’ve finally reached the nirvana of full employment (and who knows how long it will last), why not take advantage of this tight labor market to raise wages across the board? Especially for the working and middle classes that got nowhere or even lost ground during the housing, finance and tech booms of recent years?
Just about everyone knows the answer: because the business community does not like tight labor markets and the concomitant necessity to raise wages. That’s bad for the bottom line. The solution? More workers! And so the Chamber of Commerce annex — a.k.a. Capitol Hill Republicans — dutifully attempt to do their donors’ bidding at the expense of their voters’ interests.
We know how more immigration benefits big business and the Democratic Party. No one has yet convincingly explained how it benefits the American people as a whole. That’s the foremost consideration that should drive our immigration debate, and that’s what should determine our immigration policy.

The quality of workers has been steadily deteriorating. You can't just say increase wages. An employee has to make the employer money. A fuck up doesn't mean $100 wasted any more. A bad decision can mean $20k or$200k just as well. Good employees are ABSOLUTELY worth good wages. I know farm employees making $10/he that are overpaid. I also know one making $65k a and another (Mexican) $90k that may be under paid. Great welder, mechanic, competent tractor driver etc....

If the job market gets too tight (independent from Fed's other goal of inflation mgmt), wages start to rise (but no inflation), Fed will raise rates to kill a few 100K jobs, ACA, excess labor.
Capital requires that there always be an excess of Labor, and what Capital wants, Capitalist Tool the Fed delivers.

Completely unprotected borders and free movement of human beings was one of the best things about the USA and we were justly admired for it. Until the 1920s we had very little immigration law, but what little we did was was racist to the bone. Its sequel would be too and would be studied by A. Hiedler...
Before that, we basically had open borders all the way back to the beginning. I doubt we'll get the reputation for being welcoming and free back anytime soon.
I remember when some local lakes had open gates 24 hours a day. Now you have to pay to enter and they close at dark. It seems people misused the lake and parks especially when no one was looking. There was an honor box up front that nighttime people would be requested to drop money into to cover the costs of cleaning the park in the morning. The boxes were damaged and stolen, and when they weren't there was rarely any money in them yet the lake shores were littered with beer cans and food bags along with whatever trash people didn't want in their vehicles, and fish remains from not using the cleaning station, using the shoreline instead and discarding the fish on the bank which attracted raccoons which further damaged the park resources.
When it gets to be too much, partly because degradation of "give a shit" and the increase in numbers create anonymity which seems to empower assholes to be themselves, rules change. Those changes not only affect the assholes, but the decent, law abiding people as well.
Same is true for the borders. There are well intended people trying to survive who get lumped in with the mass influx of coyote crops. They all get scooped up in one fell swoop and that's when individuals get separated from others. It's not desirable just as closing the gates to public lakes isn't desirable, but if you don't want a 3rd world existence you have to do something to avoid it.

I have seen the same thing. Public kayak launch points. Lazy ass people abuse them and trash them. Damage stuff just for fun. Rip stuff out of cars while peeps out on the water.
There is a solution. Public parks controlled by government OR private citizens voluntarily giving up time. I have seen both work very well. What is very clear is that the Kennedy appeal ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your public kayak launch points, does not work well with people who do not value public lands. So, shout out to Yellowstone and all the backwoods trails and remote camp sites that I get to experience. Canada your next. Victoria, San Juan Islands, Salish Sea...
So now back to the border...

Problem is that that the children of that m**********r with no family friends house money experience and can't speak English will have a better story to tell than your kids, will get into that Ivy League school (and get a full ride unlike yours who probably will go to a state school because that's what you can afford), and will take your kids' jobs. So while you're being good and paying all your taxes (which will help educate his kids K-12) and this m************r is getting paid cash under the table, I suspect that things will look mighty unfair when college decisions/financial aid awards come rolling in. Then who is the last laugh going to be on.
It's the very rich and very poor (on full rides) who are going to the Ivies and elite schools. The middle class' kids go to state universities.

Problem is that that the children of that m**********r with no family friends house money experience and can't speak English will have a better story to tell than your kids, will get into that Ivy League school (and get a full ride unlike yours who probably will go to a state school because that's what you can afford), and will take your kids' jobs. So while you're being good and paying all your taxes (which will help educate his kids K-12) and this m************r is getting paid cash under the table, I suspect that things will look mighty unfair when college decisions/financial aid awards come rolling in.
