I hate watching Gay, his style is irritating, but 1 year is harmless..hopefully he gains some lateral quickness back in year 2 of recovery, he couldn't stay with anybody on the perimeter last season..

Using Gay's non-bird rights, the Spurs can still add to their team using the MLE ($8.6 mil) and BAE ($3.3 mil).

Might guess, Gay is a starter next year like we saw in the playoffs.

SpursDynasty85
06-30-2018, 11:10 PM
What a steal! Set him up for a 2-3 years at the MLE next year and use cap space to sign a big free agent. Use this years MLE on an athletic rim protector.

Think he got the most Spurs could currently offer and the one year deal sets him up to be a FA again next summer when the cap goes up.
It was a smart choice for him.

Glad to see him back, considering the team uncertainty. He would fit in no matter what happens with Kiwi.

Good move.

Still LOLing at "fans" in doomsday rebuild mode on a roster that won 47 games without their top 3 player, whom if moved, the 47 win roster will have assets in return that will be contributors they didn't have last year.

Birn

This is a good move. Excellent decision for Gay and the Spurs.

It's looking more and more likely that KL isn't going anywhere. Spurs are slowly going to build a team that will be in position to compete for a title next season. If KL chooses to leave, where would he go? The Lakers are not going to have any cap space. Neither will the Clippers unless they decide to tank this season. He's not going to have much choice other than to take the Spurs max offer.

Like with anything else, time always heals all wounds. Once the season begins and we quietly regain our dominance in the WC, he could very easily just put all this behind him.

The Spurs are in great shape. In addition to getting Gay back, we have both of our cap exceptions to use and they intend to be aggressive in using them. I would be on the lookout for players like Avery Bradley, JJ Redick, Tyreke Evans, Jabari Parker, or Wayne Ellington. I would absolutely love it if we could find a way to sign Julius Randle to a massive offer sheet. Force the Lakers to match and tie up their cap space further. If they don't match, we get a nice piece and screw the Lakers.

this signing smells fishy. Why sign a player to $10 mil for 1 year for an aging star that's nourishing an achilles injury? I think something is brewing on the Spurs home front... I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for the biggest smokescreen in NBA history.

Why? Because it's only a one year deal for a player who can do 25 minutes a game and still have the MLE for someone else.

And they aren't stuck in future years, he's off the books with Pau and Kawhi

If the Spurs are you going to move on from Kawhi, having a guy that can get buckets at his position is a must. Great move by the Spurs FO to bring Rudy back into the fold.

I’m with you until the Randle shit if you think Kawhi is coming. With Gay and Aldridge, Spurs be paying too much to sit on the bench.

I think when he guards ball he is over aggressive with the reach-ins but in a certain line-ups he length and athleticism allows him to play good team defense

Remember Pau? If they gave Rudy the word they will sign him back after this deal is over they will. I just didn’t want to ruin it for fans that cheered about it being only a one yr deal. I am glad he’s back but I think he will get a longer term deal when this one is over. It wasn’t offered right now bc the Spurs couldn’t give him more.

Marcus Bryant
07-01-2018, 09:52 AM
Not that much over the NBA average for one year and an expiring contract which could be useful at the next trade deadline. He's also a decent fit for the team.

Not a fan of his game, but a sensible signing nonetheless; particularly for only 1 season (though, if Aldridge doesn't try to force a trade, I wouldn't be surprised if he's re-signed for 2 following it). Will be especially true if they're smart enough to not trade Leonard to the Lakers (Kuzma).

Every team trying to be competitive needs 3 featured players and despite his archaic style, he's still more equipped to fill that role than anyone seemingly likely to be on the team not named Aldridge.

I really want to see a full, healthy year from Gay to see what he can do, so I'm fine with this deal. He came back last year, showed he can still play, and got a contract more deserving of a player of his stature. And the single year gives the Spurs flexibility going forward.

Really would've liked to see what he can do with Kawhi, but that ship has probably sailed.
