View Full Version : Patrick Mahomes church of hype

"There's nothing like Proclamation Season, with coaches and players hyping the potential of unheralded individuals at every turn. Typically, I just ignore these shout-outs, chalking them up to offseason fodder. But occasionally, some of the bluster -- when it's bold, but also sensible -- grabs my attention.

After hearing former*Kansas City Chiefs*edge rusher*Tamba Hali*raving about*Patrick Mahomes*on NFL Network's "Good Morning Football" this week, I'm beginning to buy into the hype that's swelling around the second-year quarterback.

"You're going to get a complete player,"*Hali said. "I mean, he's a smart player. He can throw the ball. Athletically, he's gifted. You don't have to coach it. In practice, I'd watch him just look guys off.*Eric Berry, you look him off and complete the ball. He did it to*Marcus Peters*a lot. People don't know what's coming. I don't want to hype him, but I compare him to Brett Favre. He runs around the field and he throws the ball and he's just having fun."

Whoa!"

I used to play his dad in bball, football, and baseball. He was great at everything but I was surprised that he had such a decent MLB career.
And that Paul Thomas didn't.

His game is nothing like Kaepernick.

The article had Favre comparisons but I think he's more like Donovan McNabb tbh

He has a tough schedule to start the season. I could see him catching fire week 5 on and being waiver wire gold

Yeah I'll be playing it be ear like usual. If I'm in a 12 team league and every team but me has a qb by round 3 then yeah ill wait until round 7-8.

Lol waiver gold.

Lol I'll hold out until late rounds if I can for sure but if I get the sense he might go I don't mind going as high as 3-4 round pick

I've got 3 leagues from $500 to 1200 and I'm pushing all my chips in on getting wrs/rbs in the first few rounds and then Patrick.

It'll be fun lol

I don't see that happening. Someone will take him in the late rounds as a second QB and hold him.

New Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has seven INTs in six practices

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- Patrick Mahomes (http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3139477/patrick-mahomes) made a choice early in Wednesday's training camp practice that the Kansas City Chiefs (http://www.espn.com/nfl/team/_/name/kc/kansas-city-chiefs)' starting quarterback immediately regretted.
With the offense close to the goal line, Mahomes dropped to pass but had a running lane so wide he could have scored the touchdown himself. Mahomes instead threw into the end zone, where the pass was intercepted by reserve defensive back Leon McQuay (http://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/3043217/leon-mcquay).
"That was on me," Mahomes said. "I easily could have run in it. We were in a live period and I kind of didn't want to hear the defense talking trash to me for running it in because they can't tackle me [during practice]. So I threw the ball. ... You just have to play the game how it's supposed to be played [and] don't try to force something in because they can't tackle you. It's just something I have to learn from, and hopefully in a game I just run it in.
"That's the first thing I said when I came to the sideline: I could have run it. [The coaches] said, 'Then just do it. Don't train bad habits.' ... That was the play that needed to be made on that one."

New Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes had three interceptions during Wednesday's training camp practice, giving him seven in six sessions. "He had a few hiccups today," offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. AP Photo/Orlin WagnerIt was a learning moment for Mahomes and a mistake he might not make again. But it's not the only mistake he has made in camp. He threw two other interceptions Wednesday and has seven in six camp practices. Six of the picks have come during the three practice sessions in pads, when play is most competitive.
"He had a few hiccups today," offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. "But that's a part of the process. When you're young you need those hiccups because they become valuable lessons. ... Would we like for him to be perfect? Yes. We'd like for him to have the highest quarterback rating ever. ... He just needs to be poised under pressure."

That's another mistake Smith rarely made, if ever.
"Being able to get in and out of the huddle, calling the right plays and then not making a bad play worse is something I've got to keep getting better at," Mahomes said.
"I have to eliminate those mistakes. It's something that can be described as a learning process. Hopefully I make those mistakes now and don't make them in the game."
Despite the six camp interceptions, Bieniemy said he's not seeing Mahomes repeat any of his mistakes. They're all the result, he said, of different factors.
He also said he's convinced Mahomes won't throw another interception when such a big running lane is available.
"He even said, 'I could have run it,'" Bieniemy said. "I said, 'Listen, they all count the same. Six points is six points. If you can run it, go get it.'"

8-8 imo, with a possibility of 7-9 or 9-7

I'm pulling for your Bills bro, but based on your above projection, there's no way a 1-7 team is going on a 6 game winning streak. A 1-7 start means half of the players are going to half-ass it the rest of the year, the fans will already have turned on the team, coaches, front office, etc., and the coaches are probably going to start giving reps to guys who weren't starters to begin the year.

If the L's are close, they won't give up...just think of SF and the Chargers last year. They had horrendous starts but never mailed it in. Plus, more looks for guys like Harrison Phillips, Josh Allen, Levi Wallace, Cam Phillips, Robert Foster, and Taron Johnson is a positive imo. We've pretty much purged our team of poisonous vets with shitty attitudes last year. Last purge left is Shaq Lawson (not really old enough to be a vet, but useless so far in regards to high draft pick)

I didn’t even really look at the schedule in terms of win-loss.

1) QB situation is rough. Tyrod was not amazing, but he was good.

2) Shady situation is dicey on/off field at the moment and any slippage there results in issues.

3) Strengh of Schedule: It’s even worse than I think most people give credit for. Read an interesting article on it: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-way-everybody-measures-nfl-schedule-strength-its-wrong/

BAL: L

Chargers: L - Chargers are going to be very good this year as they were last year. They lost coin toss games to deflate their record and this won’t be a coin toss game.

Minny: L

GB: L

TEN: L

HOU: L

IND: L (could be a win)

NE: L

CHI: L (could be a win but CHI should be improved even if their record might not reflect it)

JETS: L (could be a win but JETS wont be awful. Might start slow but will get better as season goes on IMO).

BYE Week: L (j/k)

Jacksonville: L

Jets: W because it’s at home

DET: L

NE: L

MIA: W

Im thinking 2 wins and giving myself another 3 win buffer which I think would be optimistic IMO

Bills just got Corey Coleman for a 2020 7th rounder. Helps a position in dire need. I'm tellin ya, this team is closer to 7-9/8-8 then 2-14 DPG. The front office made some of the ballsiest moves as soon as they walked in (traded/cut every big name talent on the roster), made some choice FA pickups, and took the best defensive player in the draft this year. If we can only stand pat on TT's-led 16ppg offense we'll be decent. Not a playoff team due to QB obviously, but our FO has made 1.5 years of shrewd business moves that would make the Spurs FO blush.

Was a no risk trade but while WR was/is a problem, what good is that core if Shady falls off at all and with the QB play?

I’m betting on two things: Bills had an inflated record so it would not be a 7 game drop off as it seems & they are worse than last year.

Could be wrong, but even if they are the same as last year, I still think that was more of a 6 win team than 9 win team in reality.

Always thought Mahomes was going to be either really good (albeit not this good right away) or flame out quickly due to his high risk/high reward style of play

I'm happy to see him land in a spot where he's surrounded by talent and great coaching to make it easier on him. That's the least he deserves after having the shittiest defense in the country year after year at Texas Tech

Ghazi
12-25-2018, 04:20 PM
Brees will have the better record, completion %, passer rating, less interceptions.

Mahomes will have way more TDs, yards per pass attempt, quarterbacking a better offense, etc. and its not as if his completion % and passer rating are bad, they're really good.

and both are gonna get the #1 seed in their conference.

I really think this is close... I wouldn't be mad either way.

Wasn't a coin flip in 2011. He was pretty damn unstoppable, but Rodgers was literally above God tier. That is, until the divisional round of the playoffs when he ran into the only front four in the NFL that could get to him without blitzing. And Brees got beat by the white version of Dak Prescott, lol.

To be fair it was Gregg Williams defense that choked the game away while Brees put up huge numbers on the road against the top defense in the league that season. But Rodgers deserved MVP that season. Brees was definitely screwed in 2009. He should have won MVP that year. But Mahomes should win this year. The Chiefs offense is the best unit in the league. Their defense is atrocious.

Brees was terrible against the 49ers in that first half. They went down like 17-0 quickly before special teams brought them back into the game. Brees didn't really get going until late in the 3rd quarter.

Not to take too much away from Mahomes, but their offense is very schematic and they run a ton of screens in KC. Not really hard for a QB to execute. The 3rd & 20 conversion with the game on the line to knock the Steelers out of the playoffs this past weekend, that sold it for me on Brees.

Really looking forward to seeing Mahomes’ development this year. If he ever starts reading defenses at an elite level, he’s going to be unstoppable.

Last year I still saw him do some of the same shit he'd do in college like go for the 50 yard bomb off his back foot for an incompletion instead of the easy 6-7 yard check down.

lamar jackson imo

shitty passers who are decent runners still have fantasy value. tyrod taylor a couple of years ago was a strong play :lol

its why russell wilson was always a steal in his early years. people slept on him because his passing volume was low, and yet he ended up a top 3-5 qb nearly every year.

he's a much much worse passer than RG3 was. but im not picking him because i think he's going to substantially improve as a passer. as long as he remains an active runner, he will have underrated fantasy value. he only started 7 games last year and still ended up with 700 rushing yards, that's nuts. i dont think he's gonna average 100 rushing yards per start, but even if he averages 60, thats basically a free touchdown per game, fantasy wise. even shitty running qb's usually turn in solid fantasy value

even tebow was a respectable qb play in a season where he only threw 12 TDs. tyler thigpen was a top 10 fantasy qb in 2008 because he ran for 400 yards and 3 TD's

josh allen and lamar jackson arent qb's id want for my real life team, but they're likely going to be solid fantasy plays this year

More often than not, Lamar type QBs are one and done flashes in the pan. Defenses this year are gonna stack that box.

I guess if I drafted my QB1 real late I wouldn't mind taking him as an early season backup plan but I can totally see him getting benched or injured by mid November.

If he abused a kid he needs to be in jail. If he's not in jail then go back to work entertaining us.

It's about that simple for me regarding pro sports.

And for a guy that hates the NFL you spend waaaay too much time here

Dude only had one 200 yard passing effort. He also averaged 4.7 ypc.

More often than not, Lamar type QBs are one and done flashes in the pan. Defenses this year are gonna stack that box.

I guess if I drafted my QB1 real late I wouldn't mind taking him as an early season backup plan but I can totally see him getting benched or injured by mid November.
Ravens were the most run heavy team in the nfl and had no passing threats. Teams were already loading the box

True. I still tend to stay away from run first pass second QBs especially in the second year.

We'll see

Same. And with Jackson, I also worry that he's not built to take many hits.

Never ben more impressed with a young QB than I am with this kid, he is the total package. Mobile, rocket arm, has finesse when needed, smart, good attitude, yep, has it all.

There is no reason ro see anything any different in his future, he's not going to regress. Not saying another 5000/50 season but over 4000/30 no problem.

Mahomes to Hill right there with Lamonica to Wells, Namath to Maynard when it comes to long ranch TD's.

Sad. Very little moral compass. But I guess that goes without saying given your political leaning

Why aren't you crying out for law enforcement to arrest him instead of posting on the NFL forum page?

Which you hate?

I have never paid much attention to any athletes private life, yep.....simply don't care. BUT.....this one did get to me, you cannot harm a kid. BUT....it appears not enought proof that was the situation was found.

Tyreek Hill is the fastest olayer in the NFL, and if not for track he really could run pro track, he is legit world class. I like all fans want to see this guy in action. I first picked up on him in HS when he ran a 20.14 200m, the second fastest ever by a HS kid.

Yeah if you have to choose one, I think you go with the Super Bowl.

But I wonder if Eli would trade in one of his SBs for an MVP

Absolutely if you ask him now. No one wants to go out the way he's going out. He was a badass with those talented Giants teams of the late 2000s, and now that team is gutted and he's old and slow.

Mahomes would be a star in any era, but you're delusional if you don't see how passing stats have been inflated in this era.

As for Aikman: people have spent most of this decade pretending that Struggle Wilson is a franchise QB and an MVP candidate just for managing the game on mega-stacked teams. I don't see how Aikman couldn't do the same in today's NFL.

He was never a leader in passing stats in his own era, other than a nice QBR.

yeah I think Wilson with that fat salary hit with all the guaranteed money, and Seattle is beginning to show their true colors. 2 razor thin wins against bottom feeder AFC North trash, and then a beatdown at home against a good team that's missing their HOF QB. Seattle's time is over.

That's how the league is running with this salary cap.

You get a young QB that can play well on the rookie deal and you're good. Once the QB gets paid the team goes to shit

then again, Seattle was in a lose-lose situation because Thomas wanted out, Chancellor/Sherman were rapidly declining, and the DL starters were really old... they couldn't really keep that defense together if they wanted to, even if they traded Wilson.

Being strapped for cash doesn't help getting nice free agents to replace those guys.

It's not just him. The Ravens slid, Packers, and the Rams will be next

Ravens were already going to be a problem because of the old age of their defense. Guys retired and there weren't guys available that were as good as Lewis or Reed available in the draft or FA obviously. Other guys like Boldin were just too old and expensive to even be worthwile.

Packers have always been a QB and WR heavy team dating back to the early 90s. They've never been a big spending team, especially on defense. They don't like to buy guys.

Seahawks were actually on the young side of their prime, but hotheads prevailed and the "legion of boom" didn't really like Wilson's camp, so that was essentially a Shaq and Kobe early 00s Lakers situation anyway.

A lot of different situations, I think the Rams contend for awhile with McVay's innovativeness, but he's not much of an analytics coach so he might get phased out in a few years tbh. I think Shanahan is superior despite his big gaffe in SB 51 and the 49ers will rule that division before too long.

sure, but the latter is substantially more team dependent, so its a weird way to compare individuals.
