Lol after PATFO made all their HOF's put dirt on Kawhi's name, now they expect Kawhi to stay? Pathetic.

They handle their players almost as bad as they handle cap space in the offseason.

Because they don’t want him anymore and they can get an insane package for him at that point? If he signs, they can’t trade him for one year. Him helping his value would be massive.

Why would the Spurs not want a top 3 player under contract?

The only reason would be is if you're not winning games.

Agreed. That's why I hope they offer it. Force him to make this decision/mistake on his own.

dude, you are so right. I mean it’s so clear. Spurs HOFs are such tools easily influenced by dr evil. This organization just doesn’t have a clue. If only you could manage this team. It would be basketball utopia

Yes, but then you have to find a team that can absorb that massive contract. That would not be easy and would probably be too expensive for any interested team. Lots of teams probably love him, but don't supermax love him.

money can't buy happiness but being broke sure af buys sadness. Sadly Kawhi is on the path to being broke, riding around in his uncle's 10 year old Mercedes, in 10 years.

I don't necessarily disagree, but people change and they change when they get money. S.A. isn't a keep up with the Jones' city. At least, not like LA/California. But he moves there with money he never had when he lived there in his youth, and who knows what could happen, especially with relatives and friends that will be after him. He's already shown he can't speak for himself with the Spurs organization, so who knows if he can control the family and friends that will ask him for money? And people like to act like he doesn't care about money, but if that were true, why not sign the Nike deal?

My impression is the Spurs were hesitant to extend the Supermax because of Kawhi's recent behavior and because of questions about his health. They wanted constructive meetings to be assure KL was healthy and committed to the Spurs before offering a lot of money for a team with relatively poor ownership.

Kawhi and/or his people took offense to the idea that he'd have to make his case, and felt the Spurs should just arrive with the offer in hand. Much the way a suitor of LeBron wouldn't have asked James to convince the team he was worth it. That perceived lack of respect in the Leonard camp lead to the "last straw" and the trade request. Whether the offense was genuine or it was all gamesmanship to get the Supermax, or get to LA, I don't know.

It is a bit ludicrous to sit out a year with an injury and then be offended if your employer wants to have a sit down with you before doubling your salary, and sucking up 1/3 of the payroll budget for the next 5 years.

Yes, I bet it's a little more complicated than that, but that's the gist. I bet Spurs want Kawhi to reign in some of his uncle's ridiculous behavior and get another person in control of his career that has a track record for keeping his players functional and I'll bet Kawhi and his uncle still have distrust for the organization because they want to break the family control of Kawhi. I'm sure there is something to Kawhi thinking the Spurs doctors messed up are wrong even though it appears he had to go shopping for a doctor that would tell him what he wants to hear.

Yes, the Spurs may have been completely idiotic with their money when it came to TOSB's and shooters that can't shoot, but when it was time to pay the guy that carries the team.... THAT is when they drew the line.

Because once someone pushes you, they're likely to do it again. Things may be calm, maybe even for a couple of years, but the first time, the shit storm was out of the blue after he had signed a MAX contract, and it will appear so the second time, if the Spurs are stupid enough to trust The Group going forward. You re-establish him, and then you take the big haul that other teams will undoubtedly offer for him at that point.
