View Full Version : So will Toronto trade KL to the Lakers?

unlikely because i think part of the reason for the trade on toronto's part was to create potential cap space, but i'm just glad it's not our problem anymore.

I don't. They have a legitimate chance to make the finals now. Their fanbase would implode if they move him. Now, a sign and trade next summer? Maybe.... but not this season.

I doubt it.
But if the situation becomes toxic in Toronto with Kawhi's representatives forcing to leave at deadline, and Lakers aren't winning many games or at least the games they expected...I can see a trade.
After all it's not like Toronto wants Kawhi for his game, they wanted dump salaries...

If Kawhi doesn't work out, how does anyone expect them to rebuild?
Just because you have cap space doesn't mean you're gonna attract free agents
Deng to Sacramento for a future 1st.
Hart, Wagner, Svi and Zubac to Toronto.
Leonard to LA.
Hart, Wagner, Svi and Zubac is closer to the offer it would take to trade away Luol Dung’s turd contract than a package that would get them Leonard. Maybe Meyers Leonard.
DAF86
07-18-2018, 12:39 PM
Why would they? They would be contenders to win it all if Kawhi plays. And if he doesn't play, they are better off letting Kawhi's 20 millions expire than taking on Deng's contract, which is the only way the Lakers have of making a trade work.

If those NBA's Toronto reporters on Twitter are right, the Raptors have confidence in their young guys and they also expect to lure max guys.
Kawhi is a rare case, not every NBA player left money on the table to join some X team, there are many good-to-great players that want a max contract next season.

I never said you weren't getting LeBron, it was obvious he was out of Cleveland once he did that interview in the Finals where he said he'd have never done the Irving trade. I said you were an idiot thinking the Cavs would pay through the nose in luxury tax to take back Deng and one of your scrub young players vs just letting LeBron walk.

Taxes are not as big a factor as you think. If living and playing somewhere you want means you take home $19.7 million per year instead of $21.2 million per year, most players won't notice the hit.

In the National Basketball Association, a sign-and-trade agreement is a type of contract (allowed by the collective bargaining agreement [CBA]) wherein one franchise/team signs an unrestricted free agent player to a new contract, only to then immediately trade him to another team (of the player's choosing). This is typically done to enable the player to obtain a higher salary and/or greater number of years on their contract than NBA salary cap rules ordinarily allow the destination team, itself, to provide the player.[1]

They definitely overachieved in the regular but were not built for the playoffs. If Kawhi is truly hurt somewhat this team could easily slip below 20. Shows you how much leverage the Raptors had vs the Spurs.

So, if the Lakers didn't want to part with their best young pieces this year with the Spurs and now lose on 1 more Lebron prime year.... what will they offer Toronto a year from now? Leonard will be a FA next summer. Teams don't need to do anything but clear cap space. Which is why the Lakers did all those 1 year deals. And they might not even have to stretch Deng since that asinine contract he has would be set to expire after 2019. Catnip to teams trying to clear cap space the next season.
It could be a PG situation but I doubt it. I don't see Leonard bonding with Lowery, Toronto or Canadian taxes.

Yes and no... he can be a free agent but, he also has an opt in clause for the following season. There could be a Chris Paul type situation there. Let's say the Lakers can package deng+ingram+w agner for a kawhi if he'd agree to exercise his option then that could leave them with the cap space to sign another max player. Or maybe he decides he wants to be in Philly or BY, then the same woyld apply there.

Did you not watch Philly at all? OKC, when their players were still on rookie deals? FAs are only one way to use cap space. Like Philly, you can 'rent' it. We'll take your bad two year contract. The price is that you have to send us an unprotected, or minimally protected lottery pick. Do that enough times, and it accelerates your rebuild faster than just your own lottery picks.

Philly made the second round in 2011. They had a bad following season, and one year after being in the ECSFs, burned it to the ground. It's not strange when your team has hit it's ceiling. The Spurs aren't doing it for two reasons: Pop, and they want to let their bad contracts roll off so that they CAN do it. I think they will do whatever they need to in 2020, including a full rebuild, with 2-3 players already a couple of years into the development track.
