If Manu doesn't come back we have Murray and Mills as ball handlers. That would probably the two worst ball handling poing guards in the league right now

Um, Derrick White can also handle the ball and would likely soak up Manu's minutes (with Mills or Murray).

As much as it pains to say this the team needs to finally move on from the "Big 3" era. Start playing the young guards (not just Murray) and building them up with NBA reps (White killed in the G League and needs NBA time].

:bobo....Manu interacting with Derozan and Belli and Walker and White in a mentorship capacity would be great........

Don't get caught up in labels like PG, DeRozan and White can both handle it in the PnR better than any Spur on the roster last season.

Last year he decided on July 19th...so should probably be any day now.

I don't follow his social media much so unsure if he is still posting vacation pictures, but doubt we get an answer until that is over.

In some way or another the big 3 plus d rob should have FO positions. It's the best way we can recruit in the future for free agents and maintain a winning culture. Manu should come back to play back SF and mentor. Give him a raise if you have to.

If he does come back, he would be the last of the big 3 to depart.

I never would have thought that five years ago.

What I took from Pop's statements was that LW4 reminded him of Manu as a PERSON. Manu was more his own man than probably any other Spurs player who had a long career playing at AS level. He and Pop almost didn't click at all, and it was pretty touch and go for a while. Pop's a different guy now, though.

I think he sees a kid who is very intelligent and independent in his thinking.

I think Tony's injury rapidly accelerated his decline, and the combination of all of the young guards, and his almost complete inability to play D anymore made his departure necessary.

What is so funny? That you want a 41 year old to be a primary ballhandler/playmaker in the NBA?

I agree, that is a hilariously stupid idea.

I was thinking more in terms of Manu contemplating retirement every season since that time.

I thought he'd be the first of the big 3 to leave (retire).

No arguments from me on your point on Tony. Pretty much the same with Timmy. He may not have left in FA, but his departure was the result of his good right knee being injured.

The difference with TD was that, while he was no longer a franchise centerpiece, until his other knee gave, he was an effective scorer, rebounder, and most important, he was a nearly All D defender right up to the end. That's why he continued as a Spur until 39, and Tony was shown the door at 37.

and specifically when pop said “The one thought that went through my head when (Walker) would use some of that athleticism and do something a little off the cuff, I started to think about Manu when he was young,”

but i do think that pop was probably referring as much to walker's mental aspect as to the physical aspect, if not more. of course, they are both left handed.

Yeah, it was a combination of things. The injury was the huge one, we saw flashes of MVParker against the Grizz in 2017. I don't know if it was 100x worse than Kawhi's cause we still don't know what the hell is wrong with Kawhi, but Parker's injury was horrendous in terms of ability to come back from it.

I probably should already know this, but if Manu decides to retire, what happens to the $2.5M he is due next season? Does he lose it? Does it get stretched?

I thought I recall that they stretched Timmy's money when he left, but I can't recall if that was the same situation. I think I've blocked out too many of those memories to be sure.

John B

Only as a mentor to the young team, though Spurs is thin in SF position and could use his defense

It’s up to SA. If Manu retires he technically forfeits the money. But SA could still decide to pay him and then it would count against the cap.

But I believe that the best thing about him retiring now is that if he does retire I think the Spurs would feel inclined to make a move to land a true SF.

I agree but with the lost of Tony, Green, Kyle, never mind Kawhi, in one season, that’s too much corporate knowledge lost. Marco is a great addition. But man, I almost can’t recognize the team.

Manu is my favorite Spur of all time. I hope he returns, if for no other reason but to hit each of our new rookies in the ear hole with one of his impossible passes, just to teach them to always be looking for the pass. If this occurs during a game, it’s great entertainment!

It's blocked. But any real fans of basketball can see how well he handles going left and going right perfectly. It feels like he has the advantage going to either direction. That is the amazing part.

One tidbit on Manu from Danny Green's recent podcast:

It seems as if he - the way he's been workin' out, and the way he's talkin', it seems as if we're probably gonna be playing against him this year. I don't know for sure, but he's under contract and it doesn't seem like he's ready to give it up yet."
