But, really, I'm fine with this decision. Opens the door for players with higher ceilings ... and is yet another sign that Manu is coming back.

:lol

But ya, he had to go, IMO, with Manu coming back OR retiring. There is still too many guards and while BP had potential to be a good defender it was not like it’s a sure thing. But man, I really have no idea what SA is doing with this roster even with them having no real choice with the Kawhi trade.

Perplexing decisions all around.

I don't think he ever figured out the Spurs system. He defends better than Forbes, but can't shoot as well.

With Walker coming in, he's just redundant.

:tu

He may not have the defensive reputation per se, but they have similar body types and it's clear whatever minutes Walker receives in probably at least his first 2 seasons, will be in a 3 and D role.

I still think Paul could be an NBA player, but there was just not going to be room on the active roster and he's too old to be a developmental piece, so it made sense to waive him.

That move makes sense, I am looking forward to seeing either Metu or Jaron in our roster.

I'd bring him back for less guaranteed. The Spurs aren't likely to find a sure thing in terms of perimeter defense at this point. Get guys into camp and let it shake out there. They just got $1.5 Million or so back against the cap. That's enough to get about three guys for preseason with partial guarantees.

The fact that people are lamenting this move shows that SpursTalk really just likes to bitch.

Paul was awful. He couldn't score. He couldn't defend. He's undersized as a SG, doesn't have any playmaking ability, and can't shoot.

He averaged 2 points and 1 board in 64 games. His Per-36 stats suck. His Per 100 Possession stats suck. His Advanced stats suck.

And don't give me that "he needs more time" crap, because he is already 27. He was only able to average 14.5 points in 26 minutes in the GLeague, and he isn't built for the NBA.

If he comes back, he is not going to be the next Jonathon Simmons. He is just going to be the same Brandon Paul.

I agree the team needs bigger wings. But they'll actually need to make sure that guy is better, not just different. Nothing wrong with making guys prove it in camp.

Paul started off the year really well on both ends. It's very possible that whomever they get won't be as good as Paul was then. I don't think anyone wanted to guarantee his salary. But the role he failed to fill still needs to be filled by someone, and that guy needs to be better.

Paul had 3 good games a Spur, and 90% of that was garbage time when the Spurs were either up or down by 15+. Otherwise, he was pretty much a non-factor out there. He wasn't god awful...but he wasn't anything to write home about, either.

The Spurs could get similar production from just about any GLeaguer with a similar build that they could sign. Or, more preferably, they could give Lonnie those minutes and let him try to develop...he can't be any worse than Paul was.

There was a little bit of hype when first signed. Thought maybe he had a chance to do something. Unfortunately this dude failed himself. Never really showed that he was “hungry” for a chance. I hate seeing these marginal NBArs come in at garbage time and play without urgency. Yes the outcome has been determined at that point.... but guys like that should be trying to play their asses off like Manu would. Those guys should never stop auditioning for a job. Oh well zero loss to the team.

He demonstrated just how much every inch matters.

He played d-league same year as Simmons and if you only watched those highlights then some people could be fooled into thinking he was on par athletically, he was dunking like Simmons all over guys.

But once the competition scaled up in size, length, and quickness he became a below the rim player. Even in Europe he couldn't explode at the rim.

But that 2 inches and greater burst is why Simmons' career earnings will be well over $10 million or even $20 million and Paul might be stuck under $2 million.

Not re-signing Simmons, even at 6 million per, was the right call. He's a volume scorer, who can't shoot & is a below average defender. He could never even string any sort of consistent play together here in 2 seasons. People were enamoured with his athleticism.

Paul was too short (6'2" 1/2) to defend most SGs in the league which is why he'll struggle to find a place. Walker (6'4" 1/2), should have no problems guarding SGs & some SFs if they envision him in a 3 & D type role.
