View Full Version : What was the last 80's movie?

I vote Point Break (1991). Surfing, bright colors, a soundtrack with Ratt on it, Gary Busey, plenty of "witty retort followed by a punch to the face" cliche...

Convince me otherwise.

Agreed wholeheartedly. Point Break is a pretty perfect bridge from 80’s to 90’s. The Rewatchables podcast on Point Break is pretty fantastic too.

i think you nailed it. I looked at the 1991, 1992 movies and nothing really comes close.

Good one. Lacks the soundtrack, though.

Wedding Singer

More of a parody of the 80's, IMO.

Last action hero then?

Thought about that, but I've never seen it. From what I've heard I thought it was kind of a parody too. But killer soundtrack.

Can we throw American Psycho into the mix? I know that just being set in the 80’s doesn’t make it an 80’s movie, but I think it fits.

How so?

It has like the 90's high-end stereo and apartment studio; and the fashion and what not. I guess I can see some build-off off of the 80's with the sort of big city 80's movie feel. But it seems more 90's than 80's to me on the whole. Also, nobody associates Christian Bale with 80's movies either, tbh. The OP example with Nick Nolte and something that had the same type of film, feel, actors, plot, etc all matching up. I ain't seen that movie even, but that's the impression I was getting.

I think it seems like a movie that could have been made in the 80's, but it was pretty unique for its time. I don't know what other 80's movies I'd even be able to compare it to. It also lacked a happy/resolved ending or a real love interest.

American Pie.

Many earlier and later attempts at capturing a John Hughes teenage angst, coming of age romcom for the most part failed. American Pie came the closest to resurrecting the styles and themes of 80s teenage sexualized and cultural stereotype humor and dysfuction in white suburban America, but just a bit more low brow and raunchy. Updated to late 90s fashion and style, but it might as well have been a film made in the 80s.

Another reason I think Point Break works is that there's still some connectivity to the 80's. It exists in a time before Grunge, Clinton, Fresh Prince, The Chronic, and other touch-points that helped define the 90's and shape the direction films would be taken in.

A lot of 80's-ish movies have been named ITT, but they were produced in a way that was intended to mimic 80's style... whether it's for parody or tribute or irony or nostalgia. Similar to how Grease mimicked the 50's, I probably wouldn't call Grease a 50's movie.

With Point Break, there wasn't really mimickry, because that type of movie was still relevant at the time. No one watched Point Break in 1991 and said "This reminds me of an 80's movie." There's an authenticity to it because the producers weren't purposefully trying to make it follow a nostalgic blueprint.

Nah, totally a 90's movie.

It was made in the 90’s but set in the late 70’s and mostly 80’s. I guess I misunderstood the question.

Gotcha. I took it as "which movie was made the way(filming techniques, sounds, cultural relevance stuff, etc.) that 80's movies templated".
