I remember that one poster here in SpursTalk says he's better than Splitter. Is that true?

No, we would be very lucky if he turns out as good as Splitter

He’s a solid defender though which is something ng the Spurs desperately need

Splitter was an absolute dumpster.

Scrubs here swore the defense was going to suffer with that soft scrub gone. It only got better.

He was unplayable when it mattered. Thank god for Diaw....

poeltl is a better shot blocker although it comes with foul trouble ... he can be as good in the pick and roll, but Splitter will always be the better passer and position defender

I think it is always dangerous to say a player is similar to that player and assume he will fit like that player. Tiago was excellent in a team defense and was quick enough to switch on smaller players and guard mobile bigs like Dirk and Blake. Offensively he had limitations, but was an excellent passer and moved well without the ball, wasn't a great board person either D or O, nor shot blocker. Peoltl is at least by stats a much better offensive rebounder and shot blocker. The Spurs have always been good at maximizing players strengths as opposed to making them something they are not. I'm cautiously optimistic that Poeltl could be an underrated part of this deal. He was already a 18 minute a game player for a team that won 59 games and will have just turned 23 at the start of the season.

The guy sounds good.

A big not afraid of doing the dirty work. The team desperately needs that. Hopefully, he can progress offensively.

Splitter, a totally undervalued player. Excellent defensive positioning, helping, pick&roll covers including switching but unliked because he wasn't a blocker. Always boxed out his men for others to rebound. Amazing off the ball interior player, very good passer, crafty finisher and one of the best screeners in the world. Fantastic teammate, good professional.
Popovich didn't trust him until his 3rd season, unnecessary for a player with huge professional experience despite his age. Health issues were the only real problem.

5:05 Starts mentioning that he's been at the Spurs facilities for two weeks and having a natural chemistry playing with the Spurs players working out there. Who is already at the facility working out? Bertans? Gasol? White? Who is in town that Poeltl would be working out with?

I guess my post sounded too negative ... I am excited to have him in San Antonio and I think he can have as much of an impact as Splitter had, just in other areas of the game ... he just has to keep his fouls in check or Pop will not play him as much as we would like

Lowe said his floor is Splitter, which, if true, is actually great.

I actually agree- they are different players. I think he has potential to contribute significantly. The fouls will definitely need to reigned in.

Lot's of potential in a system like the Spurs. Compared to Splitter or even Dedmond, he's a true 7 footer. You don't get picked sub-10 in the draft and not either have athleticism or true length. The problem with comparing 7 footers is that they are not all 7 footers and most of them are 7 footers in disguise (i.e 6'10").

I know! Jeff McCuckold and Jabari Young and the rest of the San Antonio media have always been soft.

I think the upside is fairly small and I don't expect him to start, but there's a chance he fits in really nice with the defensive side of the ball. That would be a real coup.

Yeah we don’t need him to be David Robinson if the guy can move his feet play team defense and catch and dunk he is a keeper for sure.
