View Full Version : DeMar DeRozan 'all possession' highlight videos

I've been watching these a lot lately to try to learn more about DD's game beyond the general highlights and mixes.
Though purporting to include all boxscore possessions, unless the foul drawn was part of an and-one, the videos do not show fouls drawn. Also there is occasional funkiness in the videos, like starting over mid video, etc, but that's what's there. Misses, makes, steals, blocks, turnovers, assists, rebounds.
Some things that struck me is that at least in the regular season he seemed to have no problem getting threes up. The stats are useful for the numbers sure, 3.8 attempts per 36, but don't show if they were end of clock or the situation. I was pleasantly suprised. I know his % was poor, but I guess his reputation as mid-range was stuck in my head.
In crunch time, however defined as last 2 or 3 or 4 minutes of a contested game, he did seem more good than bad. Given his reputation as a colossal choker, that was surprising to me, but then again maybe that's more about the playoffs.

I like his fit in the offense, he’s an underrated passer, and he shows really good balance and footwork on his drives and fadeaways, he looks good in the p/r too

He'll elevate the offense...of that I have no doubt. In spite of Kawhi's offensive development, he wasn't a passer and wasn't overly fluid with the ball. The offense got a little clunky with the ball in Kawhi's hands. He was just so darn strong, and good at imposing his will on offense, that his weaknesses didn't really matter because he could just use his will power to overcome his shortcomings.
I think the Spurs will be a much better offensive team this year. Defense will obviously be a struggle, but I'm hopeful Pop will utilize some schemes with this current group to mask, and overcome, some of that weakness. He'll have to. I'm hopeful Poetl plays a big role in that. In '99 we funneled the other team to the baseline and Tim and David took care of things from there. We didn't have superior wing defenders back then...although we had decent ones. Perhaps LMA and Poetl, and our current group can be the new version of that for the Spurs...with more scoring punch, if not a little weaker on D.

And all that being said we didn't have Kawhi at all last year, and we still won 47 games, thanks primarily to LMA's contributions. This team is better than last year.

One way I think he can be a big help is to the early offense. He brought the ball up so much and is a real grab-n-go player to get things moving early. Contrast that to last year's 3 other wing options, Green, Anderson and Mills. Green couldn't create for himself or anyone else, and sure wasn't a ballhandler. Anderson wanted the ballhandling responsibilities but was so damn slow he wasn't as effective as DD in that situation plus wasn't really a willing scoring threat. And Mills could get the ball up but had zero finishing threat and couldn't draw defensive attention to be a playmaker.

His passing looked pretty good, made the right play, granted they are highlights, but his assist increase last season gives me hope that isn't going to be LMA and DDR just taking turns on offense. I want to see the two of them develop the two man game that Kawhi's and LMA never had.

He's a shifty little guy, he can take contact and finish on his drives which is very impressive.
You can see the influence of Kobe in his mid-range game.
Takes a bunch of ill-advised 3's, but hopefully Pop can work that out of his game.
If Manu doesn't come back, you can run the offence through him if you want.

Big step down from Kawh/Green, tbh.

if assessed individually he is a perfect offensive player with his only flaws are contested 3 pointers scoring and poor decision making in the clutch, but these are not an issue within Pop's system. he is a big triple threat with preferring to penetrate than to shoot over defenders which is the thing we so much needed last year. I am sure his shooting percentage will improve 'cause he would shoot more uncontested stuff and Lowry has never been a true playmaker. I am really excited with our potential.
