Quincy Pondexter's one-year deal with the San Antonio Spurs is partially guaranteed, The Athletic has learned.

Like it well enough if it's a camp deal or if the team is at least willing to cut him. He's not a good player and never really was (as in he's much worse than Cunningham), so if he's guaranteed money or especially minutes, this deal is undesirable. But as something to maybe get his d-league rights? Fine. Not what the team needs but better than giving Crawford money.

Don't think so. He's about the same size as Danny Green without the background as a front-court player Danny had in school.

I don't mind taking a look at him in training camp and if he shows signs of life (after looking finished last season), signing him to a partial guarantee and having him as the 13th man until early January, when 10 day contracts come into play and a decision has to be made. But if the following is true, then it's another non-sensical move . . .

will have an opportunity to compete for rotational minutes and also serve as a veteran leader for the Spurs' young core.

The Spurs should never acquire a player they don't think has a chance at a rotation spot. That goes double for a vet. All the quote suggests is that PATFO aren't set in their top 10 players. That's only healthy. If they really wanted to lock Quincy in, they would not have bothered to get that partial guarantee. I have him as less of a lock than Jimmer was a couple of years ago.

4 Gay, Bertans, Cunningham
5 Aldridge, Gasol, Poeltl, Eubanks

They can stand to bring in another PF or combo-forward, but they aren't exactly hurting at that position right now. SF is easily the weaker position.

he never shot 43% from 3 for a season. those were his numbers for half a season after getting traded to new orleans. he shot 37% for that season.

and then he missed the entire 15-16 and 16-17 seasons to injury.

then he came back and couldn't buy a bucket this past season

Yeah, it was more cliché and perfunctory than I initially gave it credit for. The reality is, he's probably a long shot to make the roster, let alone earn rotational minutes.

Hopefully they bring in some younger wings to compete with him for a spot. I'd rather take a flier on someone like Anthony Brown (struggled over parts of 3 seasons, but only 762 career minutes) than a reclamation project.

Brown would be an interesting player with his combination of size and length. I was also on the Quincy Acy train. Hopefully the team signs Dangubic and Blossomgame to deals as well. They went into the 2011-2012 pre-season with guys like James Anderson and De'Sean Butler competing with Green for two-guard minutes. They had Joseph and DeColo and still added Mills to compete for the backup PG spot. I see nothing wrong with giving Pon a chance. But they need to scattershot this. The advent of two-way contracts and them still having d-league dibs in their pocket means they can afford to invest in a number of players and let them sort it out in camp.

Its not a guaranteed deal. Its like the Maggette deal years back.

A deal to see where he stands right now at the nba level since he’s had knee injuries in recent years.

Well, it's off season, and aside from the Manu retirement announcement, Spurs fans need some click bait to annoy/amuse them. To be honest, this signing, I hope, sounds like it's just a camp invite to kick the tires on this guy, and to see what he has left in the tank. It seems that Pop just loves washed up old vets as insurance, but I prefer to give someone like Blossomgame a chance to prove himself that he is ready to take the next step in his NBA career. I'm crossing my fingers that he will be given the chance. Just allow him to sign a 2-way contract or perhaps a rookie contract as a way for the SAS to keep from putting all their eggs into one basket with him. What I've seen of Blossomgame is flashes of good possibilities, but unfortunately in the big league, Pop won't give him a chance just yet, unless he does some consistent things like play good defense and play smart. This is what he's inconsistent in, but hey, I think he would be much better fit than Pondexter at the stage of his career, unless Pondexter somehow shines in preseason and turns heads to the point that they commit to signing him to a full contract, but we will see. GSG!!!

Or Huestis if he can ever learn how to shot or score from outside the paint!

Correction, if he learns how to score at all. How does a professional basketball player shot 33% for the season?

The kid has James Johnson (without the ballhandling, playmaking and less athleticism) potential but he needs to become at least below average on offense. He is literally terrible and I see why he hasn't been even a small priority to return to OKC.

Maybe Poindexter as the 14th man, if he impresses enough, but the 15th should be left for the buyout market and, hopefully, DeMarre Carrol.
