True. I think that shoulder injury messed up his stock that first time around so he was really forced to stay and then Spurs anointed him their new veteran and glue guy to replace Ginobili/Duncan behind the scenes. I wonder if they consider him almost untouchable. With this last contract I wouldn't think their would be any hard feelings if he does get traded. I bet a team would give up a nice draft pick for him right now. We have plenty of small guards on our team to replace him.

He's got to carry the torch now into the next era. He and Belli are the only two Spurs ring holders left.

So much criticism against Patty, but it's not his fault. PATFO gave him the contract and it really is not much different than what Marcus Smart got from the Celtics this year. Marcus provides hustle and defense but no offense. Patty provides some hustle/energy and instant offense. Both are valuable, and Patty got a raw deal of a contract when he was hurt. Guess the Spurs took care of him this time around. Leadership and experience has value too. I am okay with Patty filling that veteran void, and happy to see he is on the team.

I originally hated the contract, but I think the value of Patty's role has suddenly increased significantly.

I am not sure the Spurs offer the 12:01 Offer if Parker plays well in the playoffs and doesn’t get hurt.

With Manu gone, Mills is off all trading blocks. It would take a clear win and not a sideways move to move him. We asked alot from his last season. Backup point, starting point, backup SG, starting SG, and played the most guard minutes in the playoffs. We really need him to play that 20min spark plug off the bench. Unsure if we have a SG ready to start though.

Facts. The only thing Patty did that seems to genuinely upset people is sign a contract that was put in front of him.

He's the heart and soul of the team now. Let's see how he can handle leadership without Manu and Tony.

As much of a joke as it is around here (det culture), people like Patty are important during periods of transition for businesses. They overpaid because they knew this moment was coming and they would need someone to fill that role. It was pretty easy to see at the time. However, since he's not 6'5 with a 7 foot wingspan and not a perennial all defensive team candidate people will always shit on him.

As I have been saying for months: Inevitable. Patty is the only player currently on the roster who has the experience and character to be a leader - at least until Murray (or another one of the young guys) gains enough experience to take the baton.

I felt he was trying to expand his game last year with poor results. He should try more to be 3 and D guy. He needs to shot at a better percentage than be a volume shooter.

He is a chucker and definitely isn't a defensive minded player, so not sure how he'll be a "3 & D" guy.
It'll be interesting to see how Pop balances minutes with DeRozan, Murray, Belinelli, Mills, White, Forbes & Walker on the roster. I'd dump Patty, Forbes or Beli if the younger players emerge quick enough.
Obviously, Pop isn't of that mindset and will need to figure out how to develop White/Murray while still giving the veterans significant minutes.
Patty has been solid, sometimes great, in his role and time with the Spurs, but I'm not sure of his value without Manu and Tony around to set him up. Maybe DeRozan and White can replace some of that ability to create for others/him.
Otherwise, keeping both Beli & Patty around is redundant.

I'm not too concerned about Mills. He should be in the mindset of playing for his job this year and have a bounce back year. If not, then he wont play next year bc we will have 4 legit players ahead of him that will take away his playing time.

It'll be interesting to see how Pop uses Beli, Bertans, Gay, Mills & White.
I think all of them could earn significant minutes, but if anyone struggles he can go big or small.
I'm hopeful that White, Gay, Bertans & Poetl get a bulk of the minutes.
Also, I think Forbes is the odd man out and will (barring injury) see inconsistent court time.

He’s a leader and he’ll get the best of of Marcus & Rossie. I think the organisation use his all round on crt/off crt vet presence over the next few seasons to advantage tbh......

Patty gets knocked pretty hard around here, mainly because many(myself included) dont like his contract. The reality is he is a good veteran guard to have the young guards around. To show them how to be a professional and show young players they get rewarded with hard work. His game has grown a lot since arriving 8 years ago. His value is a spot up shooter along side a All-star like Steve Kerr was to Jordan. Unfortunately, the Spurs have NO such superstar. His next contract is likely half of what it is, and he will be a great 3rd guard veteran to have at the end if the bench to mentor Lonnie Walker, and Murray. I personally think Belinelli is the guard that needs to go and has more value due to his outside shot and expiring contract. Spurs still need to find a bigger, younger small forward.

With the strengthening of the guard spots hopefully Patty's role shifts more to mentor and spirit leader than a guy the Spurs need to rely on for 20+ productive minutes a night. He's still the perfect energy guy off the bench in spot and situational roles, but shouldn't be asked to orchestrate the offense or lead the team.
Never loved his contract, but I love Patty Mills. One of my favorite Spurs. And the league's contracts have caught up so that now his spend doesn't seem too outrageous. Considering he is one of the last active roster players tied to the historic "Spurs way", he's probably worth the investment.
