View Full Version : Rodgers > Brady for GOAT status

Rodgers don't cheat.
Rodgers is more clutch.
Rodgers didn't get carried to 3 championships by an all-world defense early in his career. He won one in his 20s with his arm, though.
Whenever the Packers lose, it's because his defense sucks. Would have won his second ring in 14-15 if not for an incredibly fluky onside kick recovery botched by a 3rd string tight end.
The offense is always humming. Even played well against Seattle.
Rodgers can pocket pass, scramble pass, or run with his legs. Brady can only pocket pass.
Rodgers has 5 hail mary TD's in his career.
Oh, and Rodgers didn't drop a sure touchdown in the Super Bowl which would have been the difference... especially when the other team's pocket QB caught one in the same quarter, no less.
Rodgers's coach is a trashy big old hillbilly, and keeps his job only because of Rodgers. Brady's coach is a cheater, but he's also the Sith Lord of football.
Rodgers is simply the better player.

I mean I would personally put some of Steve Young or Brett Farve's individual seasons above Joe Montana's but Joe had the superior career. Feel this also applies to Brady & Rodgers. 2007 Brady though...

I don't like Brady either, but blaming him for dropping a pass is retarded. He's a slow, 41-year-old QB, not a wide receiver. It was a dumb playcall to begin with.
But yes, Rodgers is simply better. He might be the closest thing we've seen to the perfect QB.

2014-2016 Brady was better than 2007 Brady. 2007 Brady got bailed out by Moss a ton, couldn’t handle pass rush up the middle, actually had a weaker arm (or at least terrible form on deep throws leading to shitty foating ducks), targeted Welker way too much, and didn’t throw as tight a spiral.

In terms of raw talent, it's a different list..Rodgers is probably #1 if we're talking ability to make throws that nobody else can + mobility, etc..

The “but Brady got carried by his defense!” argument loses its weight here when Rodgers’ one SB came with the 2nd best defense in the NFL that gave up 15 PPG. Any notion that Rodgers carried a mediocre or shitty defense to a Superbowl is retarded, that defense was every bit as good as the defenses Brady had in the early 2000s.
Still not quite as stupid as when people try to make the argument with Manning though when his two superbowls came with shitty QB play that was bailed out by great defense.

GB's 2010 defense was elite and loaded with talent(Woodson, Nick Collins, Clay Matthews when he was actually good, Cullen Jenkins and BJ Raji at their peaks, etc)..that run bought Dom Capers and McCarthy an eternity when they should have been fired years ago:lol
Most QB success is based on their defense and scheme, tbh.. receiving talent is very overrated, as well, most elite QBs don't actually need them to win..even a mediocre or even worse oline can be masked by the most intelligent QBs..it's too difficult to overcome a terrible scheme, though..

Brady won in two different eras multiple times.
Millennial_Messiah
09-23-2018, 11:25 AM
Brady got bailed out 5 out of 5 times...
The first 3 rings - all the defense and special teams... one year they would have lost if not for a stupid rule that has long been overturned... they also won that game on a first possession OT field goal, which has been overturned by the league as well in 2011.
2014 - Brady was solid, but let's not act like Darrell Bevell and Co. didn't take Seattle's 2nd straight title from the jaws of victory.
2016 - Brady wasn't even that good most of the game. Threw a crushing pick 6 which would have been ball game against most teams. Sure, his stats were great in the 4th quarter, but he shouldn't have even had that kind of chance. The Falcons' HC and OC flat out blew it multiple times.
Rodgers? 1/1. 2010 - Defeated Big Ben in a shootout when Big Ben was good and the Steelers' defense was still quite good.
Foles? Definitely 1/1. Took town Tommy boy in a shootout. You can argue Brandon Graham's play, but the Pats weren't in scoring position yet, and let's not act like the Eagles defense did a damn thing before that.
Peyton Manning? 1/2. 2006 - Yes, Colts defense was average at best, and the Bears had a monster defense. 2015 - Definitely NO.
Eli Manning? I'll also give him 1/2.
2007 - no... he had a few moments, but most of his best moments were chucking 50/50 balls downfield and the receiver making a miracle catch. The defense, especially the pass rush, was legendary.
2011 - yes... this time, he was the difference in the final drive to beat NE, orchestrating and making beautiful throws, and the defense wasn't nearly as good as the 2007 version. He also had taken down a 15-1 Rodgers in a shootout earlier in the playoffs.

Wilson didn't change the play at the LOS -- Carroll confirmed that one came from upstairs. The idea was to run on 3rd down if it didn't work, and if they didn't punch it in they could still call timeout and decide what to do on 4th.
I'm still heartbroken over that one.

:lol That's a joke, right? The 2006 Colts' defense held its opponents to only 16.3 PPG in the playoffs while Peyton put up a putrid TD-INT ratio and the worst playoff passer rating of any Super Bowl winning QB. He was 100% carried that season.

yes the rule was stupid but they fucked up the call on top of it
but brady is the goat. ive seen him do it way too many times to harp on one or two moments. i mean, they're a tyree catch and edelman drop away from 2 more SB's and it really works both ways. they also would have been heavy favorites in 08 and still won 11 games with cassel. imagine brady was there....
As a Packers fan I have trouble putting Rodgers above Brady. The ring count makes it pretty difficult. In a vacuum Rodgers is probably the better more talented guy, but we can’t play the the what if game.

While the Pats haven't had much in defensive talent since around 2009, they still have a defensive guru in Belichick... the Packers have had next to nothing on defense, both on and off the field, throughout Rodgers' era.
exhibit A: today: 34 year old Adrian Peterson has almost 90 yards and 2 touchdowns in 1 half against that tragic defense. Redskins have 28 points at halftime. Sheesh.
& don't forget how they gave up 200 rushing yards to Krapernick in the playoffs two years in a row

Rodgers won’t be durable enough long-term to catch Brees. Pretty much has an injury every year. And Brees has had even less to work with than Rodgers who has choked numerous times at home in the playoffs while Brees routinely carved up top defenses on the road in playoff games only to have his defense blow it.

Choked in the playoffs as opposed to missing the playoffs 6 fucking times since 06 :lol
The only year I will somewhat put on Rodgers was NFC championship against Seattle, the biggest issue there was fat fucks terrible second half playcalling though tbh.
Rodgers has missed the playoff 1 fucking time, his first year starting.
Rodgers Peak is better, Rodgers averages across his career are better, just stop.

This whole argument is subjective. Brees will finish his career with the most passing yards and the most passing touchdowns in the history of the NFL . The only person that might surpass him in those categories is Brady, but it will be close. Rodgers will not catch either of them. When you look at their ages and statistics, that's a fact. Rodgers would have to average 6,500 passing yards per season over the next 5 years to be where Brees is at his age. That isn't possible.
However, Rodgers is the most GIFTED QB that I've ever seen, but he isn't more accomplished than Brees. Brees holds more single season passing records and more career passing records than anyone, including him. If you want to start talking wins and losses, those are team accomplishments. Brees and Rodgers have certainly done their parts at their positions to make their teams as good as they can be. If you had to give me one QB in their prime to go out there and win me a game, I'm taking Rodgers. He's a freak. If I'm comparing careers, Brees will crush Rodgers in more categories than Rodgers will crush him unless Rodgers puts up incomprehensible stats from the ages of 34-39.
Choosing which one you think is better really depends on your criteria.

brady being the superior player despite being less talented shouldn't be all that controversial. we see that in all kinds of sports. duncan was far from the most talented PF the league had ever seen, but is undoubtedly the best. rodger's arm talent and mobility lets him do some things that brady cant, and some of rodgers' biggest moments are a result of his absurd arm. but he never put it together as consistently as brady. making 9-10 consecutive smart, accurate throws trumps making 3-4 jaw-dropping throws followed by taking some bad sacks and missed opportunities

One could argue that intelligence/accuracy is itself a talent. I'm not a fan of the talent/greatness distinction, because whatever variables make someone the "best" can also be considered talents.

true, and it depends on how you define talent. i usually look at physical traits that cant be significantly altered. yes, qb's can gain some arm strength with training, but a lot of it is deemed natural based on factors beyond your control like hand size, or other attributes to your muscle/tendon structure.
so things like arm strength/mobility, athleticism are what i usually refer to. any easy example in basketball is russell westbrook.

One thing I noticed over the years is that US sports fans tend to relate "talent" more to athletic traits than actual skills.
That's why a guy like Westbrook is considered more "talented" than a guy that doesn't jump as high or run as fast but can pretty much do anything else better.

its an arbitrary term... but those are the two things i distinguish, skill from what i call "talent"
its an imperfect system (i dont consider gerald green an elite talent)

It's a combination of both. Talent is basically the measure of a natural aptitude/potential to be good at something. Athleticism is a factor into that equation for obvious reasons, but so is skill-level. But what makes someone the "best" is the consistency. For example, guys like JR Smith, Brandon Roy, Rudy Gay, etc. you would call "talented" because they have both the physical ability and skillset to take over a game every once in awhile. But the Kobe Bryants and Kevin Durants of the world can do it on a nightly basis

Maybe not as an "elite talent" but many regard him as a "wasted talent" just because he can jump and run.

In the first quarter of last night's championship game, he missed 2 golden opportunities that may have changed the game entirely. Both on 3rd down. First with the score 0-0 from near midfield, he missed a wide open Jimmy Graham up the middle which would have been an 8-10 yard gain and an easy first down, instead throwing to the back in the flat who immediately got stopped and they had to punt. The second time they were down 0-7 but driving and it was 3rd and medium and he missed the back running a slant and open for the first down but instead chose to hold it too long and took the sack and they had to punt again.

Yeah, I totally agree. And that's something I learned following US sports. Just as US fans tend to overvalue athletic traits, the rest of the World underates them.
This is clearly a soccer thing where the "talented guys" are the ones that can do things with the ball that the others can't, no matter if they are fast or not; while the role players are the ones that run, jump and push people around. As if a player didn't need athleticism to do those things with the ball that others can't.

That's the biggest issue I have with Rodgers from all the games I've seen of him: many times he tends to keep the ball longer than needed.
The two greats of our generation, Brady and Manning, never held to the ball for more than they needed. If they got sacked it was because there was no escaping that sack.
Funnily enough, this holding of the ball is probably what awed so people during his prime when he could get away with it. Just like Mahomes is doing now.

& they weren't fast or agile enough to get out of it

1-4
and the "1" was in 2015 when SF was in complete rebuild mode.

Kaepernick's big contract was primarily a product of his performances against Green Bay. Kaep would be a nobody without the Packers lol.

Kaepernick was a quality dual threat QB, basically a poor man's Mahomes of today, but his ego, bad attitude and shitty viewpoints got squarely in the way.
The 49ers success was largely due to the great OLine (with the same left tackle as now), Gore, DLine and LBs. Kaep did his part for sure, but he had a lot of help.

He struggled with accuracy especially short routes which is so important in today's NFL
2013 divisional road win @ Carolina was a strong victory. He played well.

This article makes a pretty good pro-Rodgers case (https://www.theringer.com/nfl/2021/4/30/22412383/aaron-rodgers-green-bay-packers-trade-buzz-nfl-draft).
Bullet points:
*Packers supposedly promised to trade him this offseason (doubt it tbh but huge if true)
*Love only offensive player they have drafted in round 1 since 2012 (lol didnt realize that. embarrassing for their FO)
*Bucs drafted two impact rookies in the first two rounds who helped them all year including against us. Meanwhile Packers drafted two third stringers.
*Kevin King was atrocious in NFC champ game and even if ur not drafting receiver in R1 could have picked anyone to do better (the anyone part i added cuz he sucked a huge fat one in that game). They drafted Stokes this year but unfortunately he is unable to play in the 2020 NFC Championship game at this point.
*They went for a field goal on third down (still can't believe it)
*Didnt tell Rodgers the third down was their last play and would kick next play (meh)
*Whereas Rodgers was expected to be #1 overall pick in 2005 so getting him at 24 was almost a can't pass up this star potential deal not someone they sought out in 2020 they traded up for Love who was a second round pick to most so they went out of their way to get his replacement.
*Kept McCarthy as coach too long (agreed 100%)
*They went for a field goal on third down (really still can't believe it)
*When Bucs got Brady immediately went crazy adding talent around him (AB, Gronk, first round left tackle, etc) even though already had playmakers on the roster in Goodwin and Evans as opposed to lack of urgency by GB in maxing Rodgers later years.
*Entering a staring contest with a guy who cut off his parents and returned the christmas gifts they sent him unopened not bright.
*They went for a field goal on third down (really, really, really still can't believe it).

Terrah Bradshaw doing the self aggrandize with his spouting what a brave, uncomplaining soul he was when Pittsburg and Chuck Knoll began drafting to replace him.
Yahoo sports or one of the sites did a "What really happened?" recall. Bradshaw was indeed much more of a bitch then Rodgers is being. Albeit Bradshaw did not say trade me.

All good points on your post. But the field goal and the defense final play before halftime.
I mean FFS that is making your QBs job so much more difficult.
