Suikoden and FF9 are the GOAT PS1 JRPGs but makes zero sense for them to be on the 20 list.

RetroPie is awesome for PS1 once you get it configured, but I remember having to jump through a lot of hoops to enable the digital pad for some games and the DualShock for others. Some games absolutely would not work with my 360 controller configured as a DualShock (I think the Bust A Move games as well as Mega Man X series for example) while others won't work at all with the digital gamepad (eg Ape Escape). A huge pain in the ass to setup, but the Pi 3B is an outstanding box for running PSX games once you do. Especially with the filters you can add that seriously clean up the image. Though nothing touches running ePSXe from a PC. Man that has ridiculous filters and with the release of the Ryzen 2200G and 2400G you can build some pretty small PCs capable of running PSP, Dreamcast, N64, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U, and even PS3 emulation now.

Also no way this system will have any Spyro games with that remaster collection launching in November.

I use some knockoff PS3 remotes I got off Amazon for like ten bucks each. I couldn't find any cheap 360 ones. The wireless setup on these knock offs is sketch at best so bought super long charge cables.

I still have a working PS1 (along with NES and Sega)

Hindsight PS1 was kinda meh graphics wise. PS2 was a huge leap, maybe the boxy 1st generation design adds to the nostalgia. Personally I've tried to bust out PS1 for fun and eye sore. NES and Sega still hold up

Though if they did a PS2 Classic it would probably have to be the original chips shrunk on a 14nm node. I imagine that would be significantly cheaper to produce than cpus strong enough to emulate PS2 well. You'd probably need a cpu around as strong as say an early 2010's Core i3 or a current gen Pentium to emulate PS2. But I think that's what they did with the PS3 systems they use to run Playstation Now; eg CELL and RSX on 28 nm (Super Slims and Slims were on 45 nm lithography).

Need to go back and beat VII. I gave up on the golden chocobo thingy once I found out I need knights of the round table to beat Sephiroth. Then I let someone "borrow" the game and never saw it again : (

One doesn't need Knights of the Round to be Sephiroth. Not at all. Knights of the Round is only good for the Weapon superbosses. One could beat the game easily without that summon.

Side note, IX is even easier than VII. It might seem harder at first, but Zidane, Freya, and Quina have skills that consistently do max damage if leveled properly.

No Suikoden, no Castlevania SoTN, no Final Fantasy Tactics, no Medievil, no Spyro, no Street Fighter Alpha, no Tony Hawk Pro Skater, no Breath of Fire, no Alundra, no Lunar, no Driver, neither Persona 2, no Vagrant Story, no Tenchu, no Crash Bandicoot, no Legend of Dragoon, no Chrono Cross, I mean what the fuck? These are the 20 games:

Battle Arena Toshinden
Cool Boarders 2
Destruction Derby
Driller
Final Fantasy VII
Grand Theft Auto
Intelligent Qube
Jumping Flash
Metal Gear Solid
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee
Rayman
Resident Evil Director's Cut
Revelations: Persona
Ridge Racer Type 4
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
Syphon Filter
Tekken 3
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
Twisted Metal
Wild Arms

So we get the garbage Battle Arena Toshinden which may be the fighting game that has aged worst over time, a Grand Theft Auto game that's only there because of the popularity of its sequels, the wrong Twisted Metal game, and the wrong Persona game.

An emulated PS2 would be expensive as hell. You're probably talking at least a Core i3 from 2011 or later to do it, while PS1 can easily be emulated on a $35 Raspberry Pi 3. Hell I can render at higher resolution and turn on lots of filters to clean up the image too with my Pi.

What would be killer is if Sony released a tiny hardware PS2 on modern lithography with say a 120GB hard drive and put the entire library up on PSN to buy. I'd buy a ton of PS2 games for it if they did that.

They paid Konami for MGS. They should have at least gotten SoTN from them also, especially for $100. God the NES Classic for $60 and the SNES Classic for $80 had tons of the greatest games on each system but this has what, three or four of the top 20 PS1 games? What a load for that price.

Battle Arena Toshinden - was a groundbreaking game :tu
Cool Boarders 2 - I had fun with it, but not sure if it should be included :td
Destruction Derby - the destruction system was revolutionary at the time :tu
Driller - What the fuck is this? :td
Final Fantasy VII - fuck no :td
Grand Theft Auto - Grand Theft Auto what? III?
Intelligent Qube - Garbage :td
Jumping Flash - was included on the demo disc for the early shipments of PS1. Was technologically impressive, however only the demo was needed :td
Metal Gear Solid - the first 5 minutes of the game was all I needed to be instantly hooked to the series :tu
Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee - great game, however will be hard to play after getting used to the remake :tu
Rayman - trash :td
Resident Evil Director's Cut - The one that started it all :tu
Revelations: Persona - trash :td
Ridge Racer Type 4 - Ridge Racer should have been chosen.. I remember the disc wasn't needed to play after it loaded so I returned the game to blockbuster and kept my PS1 on for 2 more days to keep playing :lol
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo - trash :td
Syphon Filter - loved Syphon Filter :tu
Tekken 3 - Should have been Tekken 2 :td
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six - meh.. Dreamcast version was so much better :td
Twisted Metal - oh hell yeah, my first game I bought, 100% because of the box art and description on back.. Turned out to be the favorite game for me and all my friends to play :tu :tu
Wild Arms - trash :td

For $100 you could easily buy a hackable PS3, put 4.82 firmware on, and then custom firmware. From Multiman (in CFW) then you can run any PS1 rom off the hard drive or even a USB flash drive. Another good option for PS1 games is a Raspberry Pi 3, but the Dualshock 3 runs like crap on it (the XBox 360 controller with a generic Chinese adapter is great though). And it's kind of a pain to go into every game and switch configuration between the digital controller and the Dualshock. But it runs PS1 games beautifully. Of the two I consider the PS3 the far easier option but the Raspberry Pi is tiny and won't take up a lot of space.

N64 graphics aged pretty badly too. Not as horribly as PS1, but Ocarina of Time at 20 fps on a modern TV is painful. Also PS1 had lots of great 2D games that have aged really well while N64 didn't. Everything N64 is polygonal ugly first gen 3D. But N64's 3D games definitely look better than PS1's.

Depends what kind of games you like. I'm big into RPGs and N64 didn't have anything worthwhile there. It was massively held back by cartridges, which is why they lost the Final Fantasy series as well as the Crono series and the Breath of Fire series.

LOL this garbage has dropped to $60 (at Best Buy). Even after hacking this system is terrible for PS1 gaming though. The PS3 absolutely destroys it for playing PS1 games.

They slashed the price already? Bombed in less than a month.

I wonder if this abomination killed the market for retro consoles. Can't imagine retailers being happy with all that unsold stock or consumers being satisfied with the shoddy product. Sega's still planning on releasing a Megadrive classic next year...

It was dead the second Nintendo announced they were done with them, as NES Classic and SNES Classic were the only two good ones ever made. Otherwise they have been cash grabs for crap quality hardware. Atari Flashback has been released 4-5 times and it has been shit every single time. Genesis Flashback has been even worse with garbage audio and terrible emulation every single time it has been released. And the controllers have been junk too. The Namco Blast machines have been horrible, advertising arcade games on the box and then being loaded with NES versions of the arcade games on the actual machines. Neo Geo Classic was stupid and the controller was crap. Commodore 64 Mini had a terrible game selection. And then Playstation Classic had a ridiculous price tag for horrible quality emulation.

Good riddance to the micro console if Nintendo is out of the picture. Nintendo is the only company who ever cared in the slightest about putting out a product people would enjoy using. And I still play the hell out of my SNES Classic because the controller is spot on and the emulation feels just like the real SNES (and with an NES Classic controller and dual booting into the NES Classic it feels like a real NES too). It's sad the NES/SNES Classic have been cancelled, because they're outstanding quality and worth every cent. If anyone is thinking about getting one do it ASAP because they're not going to be stocked again.

:lol finding out that both the NES and SNES Classics run Playstation games better than the PS Classic, was pretty funny.

Not really IMO. Check the video I posted above with the $15 used PS3 wrecking it on PS1 games. :lol

It's going to be in the same bins as those $5 and under dvd bins. Sony should've just skipped the PS1 and did a PS2 classic console. But...I'm going to guess they would've fucked that one up too.

Nah a PS2 microconsole isn't doable via emulation on a $100 budget plus the games are about 5 times larger than PS1 so you're incurring a lot of extra expense on the flash memory too. You're only going to see PS2 emulation on the PC, PS4, and PS5. Not even the Switch would be powerful enough to run PS2 games well in emulation most likely. But anything can emulate PS1. My $35 Raspberry Pi blasts through PS1 games and I can turn on a lot of extra filters for improving image quality on it too. The PS1 Classic was the easy one to get right but Sony phoned it in the same way Sega did with the various Genesis Flashbacks.

tbh i cant think of a single PS1 game where i'd be thinking "man i cant wait till i get the chance to replay that game"

edit: arite, ps1 spyro games were fun

One way Sony could do a PS2 Classic is in two or three years use extremely low budget AMD Ryzen APUs on 7nm (should be reasonable to create an affordable Jaguar level IPC+clockspeed chip with less cores) and then sell the PS2 games on PSN. But I think they'd rather just have you buy a PS4/PS5 and buy the PS2 games on it just like Nintendo is doing now on the Switch.

i dont think its aged well tbh

edit: to be fair, ps1 was the first console i owned, and i was fucking terrible at gaming back then, so i probably didnt get the full experience. but i cant imagine sitting down and playing original mgs for a few hour without getting bored.

I replayed MGS two years ago and died so many times it was ridiculous. Maybe I just got shittier at games as I got older, but Solid Snake controls like a tank, which made every gunfight a chore. The Hind D fight was a nightmare.
