View Full Version : Where does Patty rank on Pops Pets list All Time?

Must be stated that even if a player was or is one of Pops Pets, said player could have still contributed large or small to a Championship. 2014 we all have great memories and mine include Patty Mills going on that Game 5 trey rampage (some nice layups too). Of course it helped I had 5K riding on the game. :lol
Mike Finley was big in 2007 (I thought he helped cost 2006).
After 2007 he was prime Pops Pets list. Top?
Matty Bonner if you need explanation never mind. Even with Bonbon, he was 45% treys when it didn't matter.
Parker. Now this could be quite debatable. A definite member of the Big 3 and was huge up until 2014. Thankfully he got out of the way in '14 but returned to Pops Pet status for 15 16 17 and 18 and would have surely continued to steal minutes had not someone made the decision to not sign him for 2019.
Where do you rank Patty all time?

tbh, not sure you can complain too much, they're all role players that followed TD and Manu's lead, and none of their contracts were that hideous by league standards.
You know Pop, he's been doing his brand of NBA Cares for a few years now, tbh...

Oh most def.
Just because he is not in the OP his pet status is huge.
Turns down the chance to run for Championship and joins the Bulls instead to stat pad.
After slacking on the Spurs is given a 3 year ridiculous contract. Unreal.

funny thread
Bonner is all time and it's not close. That said, Bonner was quietly the most interesting Spur. I'm glad he was on the team for so long (though I have no idea how he managed to stay so long).
I'll never forget seeing the Spurs put him on Dirk. Dirk never looked more like a superstar.
But hey, Bonner was part of 2014. It takes faking an injury and avoiding playing a whole season while collecting $19 million in checks and then forcing your way out of town before you are dropped from the appreciation list for 2014.

Equal to Pop’s love for washed up Finley.

Parker “getting out of the way” in 2014:
-Only Spurs All-Star
-Only Spurs All-NBA Player
-Led Spurs in scoring & assists in regular season
-Led Spurs in scoring & assists in playoffs
-Came through in Spurs only elimination game (G7)
-Led Spurs in scoring in Finals
-Closed 4th quarter G5 in Finals

For me, Pop's Pet status is a combination of 2 factors; a) Overuse when on the roster (ie getting floor time that should be going to other players either for on-court production or player development), and b) badness of contract. With that in mind:
1) Patty Mills a) In hindsight, we should have eaten our lumps last year and gone with development for Dejounte (he should have been starting all year) not starting Mills (who is not a starter level PG). b) His contract is as bad as any the Spurs FO have given out.
2) Bonner a) Much too much time with him playing when we should have been developing a player who could do the job, and we never really brought in someone to compete with him. b) He's not on Patty's level as his contracts just weren't really expensive or regretable - he never got the MLE for example.
3 (Tie) Finley a) Why did he get playing time over Brent Barry? b) His contracts were more than he was worth on the court, and he ran out on us...
3 (Tie) Pau a) I actually understand the playing time he has gotten - the roster construction has been faulty IMO b) His contracts though - he's getting paid for History, which wasn't with the Spurs, and I don't think we should be doing that.
5) Jaques Vaugn - The centerpiece. a) Why weren't we developing a young kid rather than this washed up POS. b) At least he wasn't expensive...

Bonner is THE definition of Pop's Pet, tbh. If it wasn't for Pop, Bonner would have been a career G-Leaguer or played in Turkey for most of his career.

Kieth bogans was the center piece. A veteran who on his way to retirement who convinved pop he was a starting quality sf pre kawhi. Vaugn was a career backup and played that role here.

Patty is playing the worst of Pops favorite pets. Even Finley and Bonner weren’t this useless on the court when Pop had a love affair with them.

This. His terrible play in combination with his contract elevate him over Matty. Pop’s #1 pet.

You nailed it with Pau - paying him for his LAKER history, tbh. Makes him worse than Matty in my book.

Well friends, now that we have seen the 2019 season and playoffs come and go.....want to rate Patty again on the All Time list?
Has anybody actually watched the entire interview? Some points:
- Good luck to anybody who thinks Patty Mills will be traded, Pop talked a whole minute about him and nothing he said had anything to do with basketball. It was all about him putting offcourt activities together
:lmao
Shout out to RC_Drunkford for putting together the post 2019 Playoffs interview highlights.

#1 pet tbh, at least Bonner was a 3rd stringer for a significant amount of time. Patty doesn't even get injured. I think that's the only solution to the problem. Can Amuseddaysleeper help?

With Patty n Pops 2015-21 legacy seemingly set*, how far up the list can Bryn Bryn now move?
* can't rule out a 2023 and beyond Pop n Patty reunion.

??? Because he only played for the Spurs for 3 seasons, was traded for a better player, and was not re-signed later when Pop had a chance because Hill was asking too much?

Maybe Patty still has something left in tank?
Patty Mills scored 42 points to carry Australia to its first Olympic medal in men's basketball with a 107-93 victory over Slovenia in the third-place game on Saturday.

Forbes clearly has nailed down the #1 spot.
How many teams would go out and resign an undersized shooting guard who can't play a lick of defense a year after ridding themselves of him? All I can say is that if he steals over 12 minutes a game from other, more deserving, young players I may finally quit watching games. I thought we were finally past the days of having to see him, or Mills or Marco out there in crunch time.

The lack of Jeff Errors name in this thread is concerning. The man couldn't catch a ball for fucks sake and missed an obscene number of dunks. He makes Forbes look like Manu out there yet he was the number one big man off the bench for a year.
