Charles A. Smith: Could Start at Shooting Guard

Update: Portland coach Nate McMillan said he is leaning strongly toward naming Smith the opening night starter at shooting guard because of his experience, The Oregonian reports.

Recommendation: "Most likely we are going to start him," McMillan said after Friday's practice. "You look at him (Smith), and you give Martell (Webster) and some of these young guys time to grow, so you aren't just thrusting those guys into the game." The Blazers have struggled to shoot from outside during the preseason, especially their guards, so McMillan will be looking for Smith to provide some threat from the perimeter. Smith was 3-of-8 from the field including 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

I like Charles Smith as a Spur. I hope he can snag a starting job in Portland.

Spiderman, I liked him. I saw alot of promise in the kid when he played for the spurs. Too bad we didn't keep him, I guess thats one little sacrifice you have to make in order to win three rings.

I've been wondering something about former Spurs for awhile now. I think I'll start a thread.

He looked pretty good against Sac the other night, in a game where they got wallopped. I don't remember him as a three point shooter when he was here, though.

Fantastic.

I really liked Spider as a player, and he had some fantastic nights, particuly that one against the Kings.

All the best to the dude with the 7ft wingspan.

Didn't he light up the Lakers during the regular season while he was a Spur?
