U.S. Right Helps, Cheers Rise of Brazilian Authoritarian

We reported in August (http://www.rightwingwatch.org/post/steve-bannon-and-michele-bachmann-promoting-brazils-far-right-presidential-candidate/) that Bolsonaro was getting a boost from former Trump advisor Steve Bannon and former U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann.

And we noted that U.S. Religious Right groups have been operating in Brazil as part of the globalization of the “culture wars,” even as the Koch brothers’ donor networks fueled pro-business libertarian groups in the country.

Private companies have reportedly flouted Brazilian election law by spending millions (https://newrepublic.com/article/151799/brazils-businesses-cheating-help-extremist-win-presidency?utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=101918&utm_source=TNR+Newsletters&utm_campaign=41e4a46d08-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_09_04_daily_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_50cc843886-41e4a46d08-63801109) to promote Bolsonaro’s candidacy.

At the Heritage Foundation’s Daily Signal this week, Henrique Carniero and Ana Quintana called Bolsonaro a “center-right” candidate (https://www.dailysignal.com/2018/10/23/the-rise-of-brazils-trump-and-the-fall-of-the-countrys-left-wing-establishment/).

Carniero and Quintana wrote that what makes Bolsanoro controversial is his “anti-establishment views” and “a personality that has been likened to that of President Trump.”

Bolsonaro has been

praised (https://www.wsj.com/articles/brazilian-swamp-drainer-1539039700) by the Wall Street Journal’s editorial board as a “Brazilian Swamp Drainer” :lol

—the editorial writers seemingly chuckled over the “anxiety attack” that Bolsonaro is giving “global progressives.”

An AFP news photo from a Bolsonaro rally last weekend shows a sign reading

“GOD BLESS BOLSONARO AND TRUMP! MAKE US FREE FROM COMMUNISM AND ITS SLAVERY!”

Taking a cue from Trump, Balsonaro described news reports about his connection to Bannon as “typical fake news”—

even though it was his own son who had met with Bannon (https://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Brazil-Steve-Bannon-to-Advise-Bolsonaro-Presidential-Campaign-20180815-0003.html) in New York and reported on his support for the campaign.

Bolsonaro was also endorsed (https://www.telesurtv.net/english/news/Brazil-David-Duke-Announces-Support-for-Jair-Bolsonaro-20181016-0017.html) this month by former KKK leader David Duke, who said,

“He is a total European descendant. He looks like any white man in the U.S., in Portugal, Spain or Germany and France, and

he is talking about the demographic disaster that exists in Brazil and the enormous crime that exists there,

in the black neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro.” Bolsonaro rejected the endorsement.

Writing in Haaretz on Thursday (https://www.haaretz.com/world-news/.premium-hitler-in-brasilia-the-u-s-evangelicals-and-nazi-political-theory-behind-bolsonaro-1.6581924), Alexander Reid Ross called Bolsonaro’s likely victory “a sign of a growing geopolitical union of far-right forces forming the backlash against liberalism and the left, and

the rehabilitation and glamorizing of military power and authoritarianism.”

Ross highlighted support for Bolsonaro among Brazil’s increasingly powerful evangelical movement:

Brazil’s Bolsonaro, who is Catholic but attends Baptist services, has made a populist effort to span denominations, and

receives broad support from Brazil’s growing, urban evangelical movement, including boosters associated with the World Congress of Families.

Bolsonaro was baptized in the Jordan River into the Assemblies of God, which has been pouring money into far-right politics in Brazil and around the world.

The Assemblies of God are deep drivers of the U.S. Evangelical movement, including some of the most important partners of the World Congress of Families.

Bolsonaro’s richest Evangelical supporters, like the Assembly of God’s head and Pentecostal televangelist Silas Malafaia, have partnered up with WCF allies at the Pat Robertson-founded American Center for Law and Justice, and at the Brazilian Center for Law and Justice, which

promotes – as does WCF – a transnational movement against LGBT rights.

Let's say Mueller rips Trash's balls off and rams them up Trash's fat ass,

then Trash declares martial law.

I see nothing in the Repugs and in the so-called Christian right that indicates they would object, because they are incorrigibly anti-democratic, anti-American brutal fascists.

JAIR BOLSONARO IS ELECTED PRESIDENT OF BRAZIL. READ HIS EXTREMIST, FAR-RIGHT POSITIONS IN HIS OWN WORDS. (https://theintercept.com/2018/10/28/jair-bolsonaro-elected-president-brazil/)

“I am in favor of a dictatorship, a regime of exception.”

– Open session of the Câmara dos Deputados (https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/poder/2018/06/nos-anos-90-bolsonaro-defendeu-novo-golpe-militar-e-guerra.shtml), 1993

Interviewer: If you were the President of the Republic today, would you close the National Congress?

“There’s no doubt about it. I’d do a coup on the same day! It [the Congress] doesn’t work! And I’m sure at least 90 percent of the population would throw a party, would applaud, because it does not work. Congress today is good for nothing, brother, it just votes for what the president wants. If he is the person who decides, who rules, who trumps the Congress, then let’s have a coup quickly, go straight to a dictatorship.”

– Câmara Aberta TV program (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YP1F-7IDjU), May 23, 1999

“The pau-de-arara [a torture technique] works. I’m in favor of torture, you know that. And the people are in favor as well.”

– Câmara Aberta TV program (https://youtu.be/qIDyw9QKIvw?t=890), May 23, 1999

“Through the vote you will not change anything in this country, nothing, absolutely nothing! It will only change, unfortunately, when, one day, we start a civil war here and do the work that the military regime did not do. Killing some 30,000, starting with FHC [then-president Fernando Henrique Cardoso], not kicking them out, killing! If some innocent people are going to die, fine, in any war innocents die.”

– Câmara Aberta TV program (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTPT_oCtbDU), May 23, 1999

“I will not fight nor discriminate, but if I see two men kissing in the street, I’ll hit them.”

– Folha de São Paulo newspaper (https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/fsp/cotidian/ff1905200210.htm), May 19, 2002

“I’m a rapist now. I would never rape you, because you do not deserve it… slut!”

“I would be incapable of loving a homosexual child. I’m not going to act like a hypocrite here: I’d rather have my son die in an accident than show up with some mustachioed guy. For me, he would have died.

“If your son starts acting a little gay, hit him with some leather, and he’ll change his behavior.”

– Participação Popular, TV Câmara (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZtaYvzzeTQ), October 17, 2010

Preta Gil, actress and singer: If your son fell in love with a black woman, what would you do?

“Oh, Preta, I’m not going to discuss promiscuity with whoever it is. I do not run this risk and my children were very well raised and did not live in the type of environment that, unfortunately, you do.”

– CQC, TV Bandeirantes (https://youtu.be/9T5ZSAO1MVg?t=217), March 28, 2011

“If a homosexual couple comes to live next to me it will devalue my home! If they walk around holding hands and kissing, that devalues it.”

– Playboy Magazine (https://www.flickr.com/photos/carolinavianna/5812429445/in/photostream/), June 7, 2011

Interviewer: Are you proud of the story of Hitler’s life?
“No, pride, I don’t have, right?”

Interviewer: Do you like him?
“No. What you have to understand is the following: war is war. He was a great strategist.”

– CQC, TV Bandeirantes (https://youtu.be/aSJsXlkVtq8?t=126), March 26, 2012

Interviewer: Have you ever hit a woman before?
“Yes. I was a boy in Eldorado, a girl was getting in my face…”

Interviewer: Put her against the wall, a few taps? Pah!
“No, well, no… [laughs] I’m married. My wife isn’t going to like this response.”

– CQC, TV Bandeirantes (https://youtu.be/aSJsXlkVtq8?t=401), March 26, 2012

“[Homosexuals] will not find peace. And I have [congressional] immunity to say that I’m homophobic, yes, and very proud of it if it is to defend children in schools.”

“I would not employ [a woman] with the same salary [of a man]. But there are many women who are competent.”

– SuperPop, RedeTV! (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rstRfaGJqyY&feature=youtu.be&t=328), February 15, 2016

“Beyond Brazil above all, since we are a Christian country, God above everyone! It is not this story, this little story of secular state. It is a Christian state, and if a minority is against it, then move! Let’s make a Brazil for the majorities. Minorities have to bow to the majorities! The Law must exist to defend the majorities. Minorities must fit in or simply disappear!”

“I went with my three sons. Oh the other one went too, there were four. I have a fifth also. I had four men and on the fifth I had a moment of weakness and a woman came out.”

– Speech at the Hebraica Club, Rio de Janeiro (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cp1GdBx32CM), April 3, 2017

“If I [become president], there won’t be any money for NGOs. These worthless [people] will have to work. If I get there, as far as I’m concerned, every citizen will have a firearm in their home. You will not have a centimeter demarcated for indigenous reserves or quilombolas [settlements of the descendants of escaped and freed slaves that have protected status.]”

as well as the crucial role of indigenous people in forest upkeep.

TOP BRAZILIAN SCIENTISTS FLEE BOLSONARO’S CUTS ... AND HEAD TO THE US

Latin America’s largest economy and most populous nation is grappling with an intellectual exodus propelled by far-right President Jair Bolsonaro’s funding freezes in higher education and research.

Since it took office in January, Brazil’s new government has

stalled the release of 8 billion reals ($2 billion) from education, science and technology budgets as part of austerity measures,

leaving research projects in limbo and thousands of researchers without research scholarships.

Bolsonaro, a critic of the Paris climate agreement, has proposed

opening up the Amazon rainforests for mining (https://www.ozy.com/fast-forward/the-amazon-tribes-battling-brazils-bolsonaro/93926),

while his foreign minister has described climate change as a “Marxist plot.”

Now, the country’s researchers and highly educated intellectuals are responding — by fleeing the nation in record numbers.

In April, the number of U.S. visas granted to Brazilians for extraordinary ability, or those with higher-level degrees, soared to 159 percent over 2018 and 408 percent over 2017.

Numbers of those leaving for Europe are harder to track because many Brazilian academics and researchers have dual citizenships in European countries and so don’t need visas.

“Human knowledge is science’s most valuable asset,” says Roque da Silva. “These aren’t abilities and skills that are easily replaced.”

More than a million Brazilians in all have made lives elsewhere in the world since the start of the country’s political and economic crisis (https://www.ozy.com/fast-forward/is-rampant-corruption-fueling-populism-in-brazil/82335) six years ago.

it is driving off Brazil’s top researchers faster than ever before, even those who had no intention at all to leave.

“This was never a life plan for me,” says Silva. “I never wanted to leave.”
