Who went?

It was fun. Sean Elliott, Pop and Brent Barry all had their funny moments. The food was good. And the company was great (thanks Angel and Spurschick for organize our table).

So what did you guys think?

I saw Boutons there taking pictures, so I'm sure he has some good ones.

It was nice to meet, Misty finally.

It was a nice lunch- good food great company

There were several great slide presentations - one showing the guys summer community outreach ( with Katrina victims and at the schools in V.I.) and another one of game time highlights.

While we ate our salads, waiting for the team ( who was late) to arrive, we watched the final quarter of game seven. I got to see Rasho spin again- my favorite part.

The team came in through one of the many side doors. It was on the opposite end of the room but I caught a quick glimps of most of the guys before they entered as a team.

Rasho looked fantastic, as always!! Beno looked sharp too. Slovenia should be proud. =)
Gino was very handsome too. No surprise there.

Really the whole team looked really nice, although Sean Elliot joked that they were all violating the dress code. =)

Pop made a brief speech. He does a great Oscar the grouch impression, but you've gotta love Pop. And just so you all know, last year's championship is officially over.

Brent introduced the team this year and was absolutely hilarious. Tony has nothing on him.

Brent began by giving this great speech about the full circle we've come as a team and a community and the character it took to get us there. Blah, blah, blah! It was too touching! =)

I was dying laughing so Luckily Brent didn't keep up the charade long.

Brent said he wanted to start over and promised his entrance would be better than Tony's. So Brent had the lights dim and the d.j play music while he marched back on stage accompanied by some of the Silver dancers.

Brent started by introducing the rookies. He called all three of them on stage and said that he wanted to take the time share all the great things the rookies have accomplished so far.
After a brief pause ( crickets crickets), Brent sent all the rookies back to their chairs.

Brent had plenty of video "evidence "to go with his introductions of all the guys.

There was a:
-melodrama of Manu's many flops and then awarded him with an academy award.

- slide of Tony photos except every other one almost was of Eva,
The last pic was a picture of Eva with her last boyfriend J.C.
Brent has no clue how that picture got in there. =)

-fabricated video ( I didn't recognize the actors) of Beno and Rasho partying at Bar 11

- video of Wayne's world with Gino and Fabri's faces on the actors

- the clip of the on court altercation between Bruce and Michael Finely.
When it finished Brent made the guys hug and make up.

That is all I can remember off the top of my head. What else guys who were there?

I wasn't in the best of shape, watched too much hurricane coverage, and busted by ass yesterday pruning foliage for today's bulk pickup (4:35 PM, they ain't come yet). And my new chainsaw wouldn't start, yanked by frickin shoulder to hell and still no go. Chainsaw shop smelled it, "old gas". WTF? I get old, but gasoline gets old? ok, so now it starts.

Anyway, I didn't get as many pics as last year. This luncheon seemed much faster paced and shorter than last year, but was really excellent and had tons of great laughs. Pop was vintage Pop. He promised the Spurs would make the playoffs!! :lol

Brent did the team introductions, and had some incredibly funny, cutting videos which must have take a lot of time to put together:

"Brent, Beno, Rasho" out clubbing (was a clip from SNL of Jim Carrey, Will Ferrel, Chris Kattan as disco jerks in a club).

An "old timey, scratchy, sepia" style video of Manu called "The Flop", and then Brent presented Manu with an gold Oscar statue for "acting", which Manu went up and received! :lol

A rapid slideshow of Tony, Tony, Eva, Tony, Tony, Eva, Tony, Eva,Eva,Eva,Eva,Eva,Eva,Eva,Eva,Eva, and ended/stopped with a photo of Eva and some other dude. ouch!! People were in tears, seems like everybody got the joke.

Showed twice a montage of Bruce and Michael bumping and shoving the shit out of each other last year in a Spurs/Mavs game. Bygones are truly bygones.

Gotta get a new camera with less delay between pics.

I had about 2 cubic yards of boobs at my table, and one sweet young thing but she was her parents.

There was a really cute blond chick next to me. and she has nice face, too!! :lol

When rotating in my chair from the table to watch the stage, I kneed the fat lady next to me twice in the butt. It was clearly a blocking foul by her butt. She should have been forced to buy 2 seats. First time she said "no problem", 2nd time she wasn't so cool.

Here's my report ---

NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs Tip-Off Luncheon
October 24, 2005 – Downtown Marriott

Juli, Jackie, Pam, Kristen and I arrived together for the luncheon and milled around for a bit, checking out the silent auction items and getting our picture taken with all 3 of the Spurs championship trophies. There was one item I was determined to get from the silent auction, an autographed poster-sized picture of Horry’s dunk in Game 5 over Rip Hamilton, I went up to about $400 but it ended up selling for $625 and I just couldn’t justify paying that much, even for charity. I did get my pic with the trophies and did the ‘spin for a prize’ where I won a Tony Parker bobblehead.

Sean Elliott kicked off the event as the emcee once again and brought up Bruce Bowen to say the prayer before lunch was served. He asked that the lights be dimmed a bit when Bowen came up to the stage because of the glare from his head.

After lunch, Coach Pop had his turn and made very clear that last year is over and no one cares about the championship anymore. He asked Michael Finley, Nick Van Exel and Fabricio Oberto if they cared … quite obviously they don’t since they weren’t on the team last year.

Tony Parker apparently managed to retire from doing the player introductions and passed along the tradition to Brent Barry. Barry took the stage and started a boring speech that had everyone asleep, he stopped mid-way through and said, laughing, “I can’t do this, let me start over.” Lights were dimmed and he walked off stage, he walked back on along with 3 silver dancers and livened it up a bit. He utilized a lot of pictures and video in his intros …

The Theme was ‘Back to School’ and each player had a title ---

The Rookies - Freshman Orientation
He brought up the 3 rookies trying to make the team and said he wanted to say what their accomplishments and awards were up to that point, kinda looked at his paper, then thanked them for coming up (for anyone who doesn’t get that, he was saying that have no accomplishments).

Brent Barry – Class Clown
Showed Brent in a wetsuit with a surfboard.

Beno Udrih & Rasho Nesterovic – Semester a Broad
Life, Liberty and the Happiness of Pursuit
He said these guys are serious partiers and went to club with them once, then showed a video from Night at the Roxbury (is that the right title?). I got this on video.

Tim Duncan – Teacher’s Pet
Brent said before he played with Tim, he’d heard that TD was boring, had no sense of humor and didn’t follow the dress-code. He wanted everyone to know that it was all true.

Bruce Bowen & Michael Finley – School of Hard Knocks
They showed the video of Bowen and Finley shoving each other … and then showed the video again. Finley and Bowen hugged at their table, they were sitting next to each other, and enjoyed the moment. Brent said he was going to have to speak with Yardley though because they named their new baby boy the same name that Brent and his wife wanted to name their boy that is due in January. As a side note, we saw Erin Barry and she looks absolutely adorable, especially for a woman that is 6-months pregnant!

Nick Van Exel – Transfer Student
Van Exel has been used to playing for a lot of ‘yes men’, as in “Yes, your honor…”. They showed a bunch of WANTED pictures of his former teammates from Portland.

Tony Parker – Marketing
TP is doing a good job of marketing himself and showed a video with pictures of Tony, including his GQ shots, with a couple of Eva intermixed, then they forgot about Parker altogether and just showed pictures of Eva and ended on a picture of Eva with ex-boyfriend JC Chavez. Barry apologized for putting her ex on there and claimed to have no knowledge of that, I got video of this segment as well.

Sean Marks – Home Economics
Also to the other new dads on the team, including Nazr Mohammed who didn’t make the trip since his wife just had a baby recently. Barry said he was able to get footage of Sean’s baby being born and showed a clip from Saturday Night Live with Charlie Sheen delivering a “baby” which turned out to be Will Farrell.

Fabricio Oberto & Manu Ginobili – Drama Class
They showed a couple of pictures with Oberto’s & Ginobili’s faces photoshopped onto the Wayne’s World guys (see the pictures). Barry introduced Fabio then continued on with Gino …
Manu was given an acting award for his theatrics on the court, a.k.a. flopping, and showed a little video of this. Barry brought Ginobili up to the stage to accept his award, which he did and even showed it off a little as he walked back to his seat (see my picture).

Robert Horry – Graduation Day
He said that Horry makes everyone else feel better and then showed a video of some of Horry’s great shots from this playoff run … that’s right, Barry, respect your elders!

The players then left and they had the drawing for the prizes, after that we were free to go. The ticket that we got when we checked in got us a door prize, a miniature championship trophy. The guy next to me left his ticket so I got 2 of them!

It was great to meet everyone that I got to meet and I can’t wait for the game tomorrow night!

Sounds like everyone had a GREAT time. Too bad the Spurs Foundation doesn't tape the festivities... if they did, maybe they could put it on San Antonio on Demand and charge $2.00 - $3.00 to go to the charity. I'll bet LOTS of people who can't afford to do the luncheon at $100/person would pay a small fee to see all the fun from the comfort of home. They could even include some B Roll of interviews with fans who attended. Oh, well... maybe next year?

When I saw the TV guys setting up on a platform at the back of the room (see one of my pics above), it gave me the idea of filming the whole thing. And I bet eachof those TV guys taped it completely. Into their video archives never to be seen again. Only about an hour or so of taping. I bet a couple a 1 GB CF modules could hold the whole show in DV on a prosumer camera.

I got plans for next October. :)
