Good defense is not 1on1. You discount Murray as a help defender so yes, he could have help against Prince.

I thought Poertl had good hands? He can not grab the ball to save his life out there.
White had a pretty good first half. DDR causes trouble and lots of respect from the defense. Hawks got into the penalty early again so maybe the Spurs can get some guys in foul trouble early.
Forbes is doing pretty well on both offense and defense. He caused at least one turn over, but still not long enough to be a good defender.

All the starters scored. I no longer miss Danny Green.

Chinook
10-10-2018, 07:51 PM
White's looked competent. This is a guard's game tonight, so his scoring was expected. I don't like that he only has the one assist. Pau and DeRozan have been doing the job, though. The passing in general has been very good outside of a couple of rough patches. 18 dimes on 23 makes is much better than they've been doing recently. That's the effect of them not having Aldridge on the court. Gay and DeRozan have a ton more room to operate inside the paint. That's not a reason to get rid of Aldridge, before DAF tries to bump his thread. But that shows why LMA shooting more threes this season is a big deal. He needs to get out of the way when he doesn't have the ball, especially if Poeltl starts.

I like Cunningham, as I said. He isn't great at anything, but the team has a lot of obvious weaknesses, so at any given time on the floor, DC might be one of the team's best defenders, rebounders or shooters. I definitely think Dante is a four in today's league, but he's versatile, even if he's not all that great. I like Metu playing the four today. He hasn't had much of a chance to make plays on offense, but he's come out with effort and done some heady things. Poeltl just seems like an inefficient, low-IQ Splitter. Yes, he has better athleticism, but he lacks all kinds of polish. I'm not trying to cut bait or anything -- better players than him has needed a full year to get into the system -- but folks thinking he's better than Pau are off their rockers or just hate Gasol too much to be objective.

Bryndolen, Patty and Marco have been lighting it up from three, and they've been making plays for each other. That's what a good bench will do. Forbes' defense has been more inspired this year, though I'm not sure how that will hold up as the team faces real competition. As of now, I see more bad than good, though the front court they play with will determine their success. Bertans and Poeltl make the most sense on paper, but if Gasol is a long-term bench player, it's going to be interesting. I think Cun can hold his own if he gets a chance with that unit, though he's going to have to be the defensive ace of that group. Might be asking too much of him.

Chinook
10-10-2018, 07:55 PM

Nah, you're just setting up for a year-long shtick of moaning about Murray. I've never discounted him as a help defender. I took major issue with the idea that Murray was a lock-down guy. Regardless, my point is that the back court played good defense. The issue was the front court, namely them missing Aldridge's size and Gay not keeping up with his man. Murray would not have been blocking everyone's shots every game, just like Kawhi didn't when the Spurs gave up 40-point quarters in 2013.

Cunningham makes sense as a starter. He's stockier, so he should be better on starting bigs. Bertans should be playing with the bench right now. Not a fan of that not happening.

White is a bit slow footed to be a good pg defender. Looks a bit floppy out there. He needs to get low and stay focused. This unit especially once Aldridge gets back is huge but is slow.

Cunningham makes sense as a starter. He's stockier, so he should be better on starting bigs. Bertans should be playing with the bench right now. Not a fan of that not happening.

Idk. So we are going to throw Mills, Belli, and David in the 2nd unit? I think we will need more physicality especially for the defensive end. Lineup wise. Davis with Gay and Gasol and DeRozan made sense. I agree moving forward Bertans will come off the bench but it will be interesting to see how the line up shakes out. They may need a quicker gaurd in their to gaurd shift pgs. White might not cut it.

Best lineup might be:

Aldridge, Gay, Bertans, DeRozan, Mills/White/Forbes.

Makes sense. Thanks.

He told the story about Pop announcing to the team that he had fired Bob Hill and took over as coach. 'Nique said that everyone on the bus started laughing and then the bus left, the players then thought "I guess he was actually serious."

'Nique gave Pop a taste of what it's like to coach a future HoF player wearing #21.

I just thought, Pop has had a future HoF player on his roster every year of his career: 'Nique, then Duncan, and now Pau is the only lock on the team. How many other coaches have had a run like that? I don't remember enough of Jerry Sloan's career pre and post Stockton/Malone.

Bruh, we don't need a new white knight poster looking for whatever critical about their guy to get upset by. We just got rid of all the players that had those fans, and you insist on trying to restart it with a fresh batch. My arguments last year were well-supported, to the point that you started off your previous post by conceding them. So now you just feel like complaining. Over and over and over again. Needs to be closer to 33 or 35 for my liking White has to average at least 12 points for me to feel like he's doing his job, and DeRozan should be able to keep up his previous scoring with White there to handle the ball some.

Two more dribbles gets him closer to a defender's outstretched palm as well. He was in his spot, the defender wasn't. He took it wide-open. Game.

First off, I like Walker and think he will be a solid rotation player for a long time. Secondly, we are still in preason and nobody anointed you to nip anything in the bud. I still say Murray will be a star and his defense will be sorely missed this year despite your opinion on it. Also, you should take your own advice on the sniping b/c Murray will be the PG for a long time.

"My own advice" had nothing to do with liking Walker or not. There's nothing wrong with being critical of players. I'm not going to stop just because it offends you. That's not the same thing as trying to make it a Murray vs Walker thing. They aren't in competition. I never suggested they were. You did. I'm glad you're backing off a bit. You were starting to go down a bad road for the Church of Murray by making it seem like he had to be the best rather than just good or bad in his own right.

But this game was meaningless and the people who I wanted to play well did for the most part. LOL at Trae Young and the Atlanta bench acting as if this game meant something. All that dancing and celebration for a preseason game... It's gonna be a long season for the Hawks

Obviously shooting. He just doesn’t have moxie to bring his game to the next level.

Our defense is going to suffer quite a bit this season after losing Kawhitter, Danny, and now Dejounte along with another long, LW 4, who should turn out to be a good defensive player. We should be fairly good in the paint but, the wings/guards & SF is where we are weak. Maybe Pop, can work some magic but, it hasn't worked on Patty or Forbes. We shall see.

We got LW4 back in 2 months. Also Huestis is a elite wing defender, out for maybe a month. Then maybe you can use Metu as a SF defender.

I kind of expected Cunningham to be that defender, but it seems that he's got feet of lead.

I didn’t like Derozan as a building piece and the Spurs got hosed in that trade.
I have accepted it now but didn’t like it. Wait until the paper tiger gets stifled in the playoffs and the choking starts. (If they make the playoffs...)

PATFO had no choice and took the best deal available.

DeRozan has bad shot selection, but he's the only player that can seem to penetrate and dish. Parker and Manu did that for the Spurs, DeRozan may be the only one who could do that now. Actually, White has some skill in that too. DeRozan still needs to figure it out, but he's got some natural talent and just needs a more disciplined approach.

I wouldn't really expect that, as he is a raw rookie that still isn't sure when to hedge or when to play ice as a big man.

That being said, if I were him, I would be trying like hell to get some reps with Gay and DeRozan after practice. Strong wing defense and rebounding is his clearest path to playing time on the roster right now, especially considering his slight build.

That's the only real niche he can fill in the NBA. I doubt he can add extra weight on that small frame of his.

You and everyone else, Ace. It just seems like with Green, Leonard, OG and Siakam that Toronto has an embarrassment of riches there while SA has nothing. Poeltl just feels like odd compensation. Toronto should have preferred to keep him. SA should have preferred someone else instead. The team already had a young big waiting to come over and had just drafted a second one they were high on. They NEEDED a defensive forward like they needed air.

You can say that more so now that Murray and Walker are out. But what happens to our defense if we dont have Poeltl and lose Aldridge to injury? Our defense would've fallen off a cliff. Poeltl might have not shown it yet but he would be a good replacement for Aldridge.

Also consider albeit weird fittings our perimeter depth is better than our interior one especially when you consider Gasol and Aldridge's age. They were more prone to missing a few games this year.

Toronto also had Ibaka and Valaciunas. Poeltl was expandable for them but was still one of their best bench players. Almost split minutes with Valaciunas.

Yes, assuming that all of Murray, Walker and Aldridge are out, the team would struggle defensively. That's the case whether they have Poeltl or any other player from Toronto. Just too many missing bodies. I'd rather have OG and Milutinov than just Poe though. Hoping seriously Jakob makes me eat those words.

I'm a little surprised concerning Dante. Hopefully he can get that lead out. Really a shame about Dejounte. He was looking good. And if Lonnie can learn from the sideline while he heals he may get some good minutes from Pop at certain points in the season. While DJ and LW 4 are out I hope Derrick cam really show that he can be a consistent contributor.

I don’t know Pop has never been good to young bigs they take minimum of one year to figure out defense amd
offense positions. But I too would have loved OG and bring over Nikola.

I'm assuming he means a carry. Once that second hand goes on the ball, you're not supposed to be able to dribble. He takes two dribbles on that play: one immediately when he catches it, and the other after it looks like he's already started his gather move.

Derozans first move is not a carry. He did one quick dribble and picked it up while to the basket. The Walker injury cross over was definitely a double dribble. Hit the ball with his right then left before the ball hits the ground. Looked pretty though.

He did two dribbles. Look at the replay of the play (rather than the first playthrough during live game action). It's one thing to think it was still legal, but he literally dribbled twice.

I think I was wrong here. The "first dribble" looks like him catching the pass. From the replay, the angle makes it look like a dribble DeRozan took.

No. Bouncing it TWICE with two hands is. If what you say were true, you could never catch a pass with two hands and then put the ball on the deck. There has never been a rule that you had to catch the ball with one hand in order to preserve your right to dribble - or on the back end of this play any rule that prohibits picking up your dribble with two hands and going to the hole. Or a rule that you had to dribble the ball more than one bounce.
