lol raptors fans are upset at Spurs for "misusing" Poodle. As a raptors fan, I will say that I never understood the hype surrounding Poodle. I can't even put my finger on why the raptors fans loved him so much. It's probably the analytics nerds who loved advanced stats.

He was so good last year, it only took Pop a few months to ruin him:lol

I think this was just a matter of matching up with the Lakers.

Almost every Big we have had besides David, and Timmy Pop has had problems with. Don’t know why but it takes a whole year before any big can get serious minutes.
Had hopes for Poodle will give him a year but would rather have Nikola who play more with an attitude and plays physical but stay out of foul trouble.

Manu retiring pretty much killed any chance Jakob was gonna contribute this year tbh. Still early so hopefully he turns it around, I'm sure Pau will start shitting the bed after a month or two.

If that was the concern it might have pau who needed to get benched. I didn't watch the game tho, so my comment is just an observation based on Pau's trajectory against the fast teams.
Some people have mentioned he's just not playing well.

Lets see what happens next few games. Last game was a bad matchup for Poeltl. Spurs needed to be more mobile, long, and smart (no fouling those diving lengthy Lakers forwards in the paint). He's young and still needs time to adjust to the new system.

He's just not that good. Def not good enough for Pop to trust him in a Must Win National TV LeBron game :lol maybe Pop wants to go coach the Lakers when he's done here.
I'm sure Purrrrrrtl will see regular season minutes eater minutes against the Wiz/Magic/Bucks type teams a la Blair/Bonner role.

The Spanish ostrich has actually been a positive on the court. You'd know this if you weren't butthurt over Fathead walking and actually watched a game this season, Memphis.

Spurs need a PnR guard to make the best use of Jakob. They don't, so he's reduced to offensive rebounding garbage scoring. That's not good enough to survive in today's NBA. Hopefully DD can help him.
It's kind of feast or famine around here.
Poertl was praised as a savior, now he's worse than Joffrey Lauvergne.
How about a middle ground (especially for the type of young big that Pop has always been slow in trusting).

I think the hate of Poeltl is becoming a bit too fashionable. I know I've been critical of him since pre-season, but he's done nothing to make him the forum whipping boy. I think he needs to be on the bench in a rim-runner role like Splitter was back in the day. Once White gets back, hopefully he can run with Patty, Davis, Gay and Jakob. I just don't think he's where he needs to be yet mentally. He doesn't know where he fits in the starting unit. He hurts spacing and overall just gets in the way. Once he figures that out, he'll be a positive again. I still don't like him as the main "potential" piece from the Leonard trade. But if the team had signed him to a one-and-one deal with RFA rights this off-season, I wouldn't be upset. I know it could have been worse. It could have been Lauvergne coming back.

He's playing awful right now. Hopefully he'll get adjusted. Unless your name is Duncan, bigs tend to take a while to acclimate under the 'Spurs Way'.

i still have high hopes for him. i mean people do realize its only been 3 games so far.
if he has a limited role, then so be it hopefully he can flourish and by next year become a regular rotation player. or maybe it was just a matchup thing and will be back to starting next game. we shall see.

Totally agree most bigs take a whole year to get major playing time from Pop.

Poeltl obviously has to be a lot better, but he also has to be put in a position to succeed. Playing on a slow paced, ISO based first unit, next to a post up big, is a recipe for disaster for a rim running C.
Long term, I still think he'll prove to be a quality piece because the 2nd unit, where he should eventually settle in (either during or after this season, when Gasol is gone), will feature a heady play maker, shooters, pace and ball movement.
I think this was just a matter of matching up with the Lakers.
It's crazy how many people don't understand matchups. Even if Poeltl was playing well, it was obvious that Aldridge would start at C against teams they can't get away with playing 2 traditional bigs against and that Cunningham would take his place in the rotation.

It could be that the bigs lack some 21/50 fundamental that Pop cherishs which he forces on bigs when they first arrive but it changes the way they move or play so it takes them a while to get back up to their regular comfort level.

Because he’s not good right now. Soft as Charmin, can’t rebound, and has zero offensive game. He also literally just turned 23 like a week ago, so he’s still really young. Splitter was not a contributor until he was 26 or so. It usually takes these young, soft, euro bigs a bit longer to develop and acclimate to the NBA. And now he’s learning a new system under Pop as well. I think he’ll be fine eventually. But it’s gonna take some time unfortunately.

Pau is a better facilitator than Poeltl in a slowed down tempo, and can spread the defense with his outside shots. Poeltl needs to connect outside shots to play along midrange shooters Demar/LMA or he’d just be clogging the lane (it’s funny because I hate bigs shooting 3’s but it’s the only way with Spurs lineup). He’d be perfect with Manu in the 2nd unit dishing on a cut. Poeltl could sub for LMA to play pnr with Demar, but would need outside shooters like Davis, Forbes or Gay along. It just depends who Spurs are playing and Pops is adjusting. Who I like to see is Metu playing 3nD SF but probably not gonna happen much
