Consider hate speech, for example. There's a push now to do something about it. Do you think the 1st Amendment will be altered?
We live in a country of people who have no concern for other people. In Japan, people will stand in long lines and wait their turn because they are conditioned over generations to consider the collective and use an honor system. In the US, it's every man for himself and has been since the onset. That will not change with legislation. When you have so many different cultures who fundamentally disagree with one another, all living together, you're going to have issues. Japan has a homogeneous culture and Americans living there often stand out because they bring with them American tendencies to bypass courtesy in favor of being 1st. Individualism is king in the US. We talk about players instead of teams. Players shit on their own teams to get ahead in the game (Kawhi Leonard) and the concept of honor is just a fancy talking point. That won't change in our lifetimes and it's not getting better.
We have talked about it for years. Nothing has changed. We don't move forward because the proposed changes are ineffective placebos ( https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=270618&highlight=gun ) and even those placebos are resisted by conservatives. The suggesting that a full gun ban be considered was treated like a radioactive waste drum because the left is afraid to go there in fear they will isolate a large portion of their voter base.
Public opinion doesn't move the supreme court.
My point is that "someday someone will do something about it" isn't a viable plan. I've asked people here what they would propose as a solution and the large majority of them either refuse to answer or they say something similar to "someone needs to fix it".
So what is your solution?
Defend Trump and defend guns?

country of people who have no concern for other people
... the myth of Rugged Individualism.
When employees banded together in unions, progress was made, but the oligarchy has crushed union power, and ignorant Americans believe the oligarchy's propaganda that unions are evil, and the LIE that Capitalism is best for everybody
We don't move forward because the proposed changes are ineffective placebos
no, because the oligarchy runs the country and will spend $Bs to buy politicians, judges, regulators, to maintain the rigged status quo, so no "move forward", no PROGRESS are possible
Public opinion doesn't move the supreme court.
... with Gorsuch and K, SCOTUS has become a horrible unfunny joke, but the unstoppable oligarchy is laughing at the success of their decades-long strategy of tainting SCOTUS with 5 (at least) hard right political-whores-in-robes. fait accompli
they say something similar to "someone needs to fix it".
... people, at least subconsciously, realize they are powerless. The system chooses political candidates to defend, continue the system of the party establishments (eg, any Bernies sidelined, Repug moderates primaried, purged), so no electoral victory For The People is possible.
Americans used to ridicule Euro-sclerosis, but guess which World Champion country is now fatally sclerotic (for the mass of the people)?

Consider hate speech, for example. There's a push now to do something about it. Do you think the 1st Amendment will be altered?
Don’t think it will, tbh, but I also don’t think it’s off the table (even though I don’t agree personally with it). Wouldn’t be the first time there are exceptions carved out from the 1st Amendment. For example I can totally see a political push for that if the currrent specious environment continues. For good or bad, we’re reactionary by nature.
We live in a country of people who have no concern for other people. I think that has way more to do with community building than anything else. As the US has grown in population, it has slowly but steadily veered from conservatism to progressism and individualism to community. It’s a process that’s still ongoing and I don’t particularly think it’s reversible for obvious physical reasons. It can certainly be slowed down by the occasional misguided progressive policy.
But, again, I don’t think it’s the people, but the law that is the larger impediment. I have near zero doubt states like California or New York would implement a much tighter grip if it would be legal and I actually don’t think their citizens would be throwing a hissy fit about it.
We have talked about it for years. Nothing has changed. I do think this issue will be coming to a head sooner rather than later (and by that I don’t mean immediately, but sooner than other politically charged issues). We’ll see if there’s a cathartic event that brings it to the fore where it can’t just be swept under the rug anymore. I also don’t agree that some of the proposals are placebo at all. I think some of them would be relatively effective, and might not even require a constitutional amendment. The usual suspects will fight them tooth and nail under the guise of freedom, but at the end of the day, reality speaks louder than words.
Public opinion doesn't move the supreme court.

You would be wrong about that. The Supreme Court once stood for segregation also. It took public opinion, followed by Congress to force their hand.
I don’t blame you for taking the immediate view and feeling nothing will happen, I would actually agree with that sentiment up to a certain extent. I do think it makes much more sense to tackle this one challenge at a time rather than wait until a reactionary decision is made on the backs of some despicable event.

It’s a process that’s still ongoing and I don’t particularly think it’s reversible for obvious physical reasons. It can certainly be slowed down by the occasional misguided progressive policy.
Let's look at the hispanic community. It's written that only about 16% of registered voters actually vote. How many of the overall community do you think actually registers to vote? If a community of common goal folks cannot turn out to vote, what's the odds they are going to build their communities? So few get involved. Hell, many people don't even want to mend family ties, much less community ones.
But, again, I don’t think it’s the people, but the law that is the larger impediment. I have near zero doubt states like California or New York would implement a much tighter grip if it would be legal and I actually don’t think their citizens would be throwing a hissy fit about it.

I don't think it will because these are spikes on the radar, not long lasting signals. There too much political rhetoric from each side, and too little fact and understanding. Because of this, the debate gets condensed into "they want to take our guns" vs "They want moar gunz". Neither is true, but those strawmen prevent any real discourse and I believe that's the goal.
You would be wrong about that. The Supreme Court once stood for segregation also. It took public opinion, followed by Congress to force their hand.
But the supreme court doesn't act over night, nor does congress. Congress can pass a bill and it be signed into law, but if it's unconstitutional, it will be challenged and overturned.

1st Amendment guarantees that govt can't block speech.
Private companies, eg on Internet platforms, are free to block any and all speech.
Since oligarchy's SCOTUS perversely ruled that "money is speech", then a private company blocking speech is an equally protected "expression"
( Why did Internet wait until a Gab-ber slaughtered a bunch of Jews to shut down Gab? )

Do you find it disturbing that the Russians have more success getting people to vote in the US than the Dems have?
ElNono

Which is why each party wants their people on the supreme court, since they will have the final say in these matters.
The SCOTUS does generally defer to precedent though, and never is a sure fire political tool. Many cases to name here old and new (Roe, Obamacare, etc). The fact that there’s precedent to it means that the bar is somewhat lower.
Turnout is cities is big, regardless of demographics. This is why the GOP hasn’t won the popular vote in a while and it’s becoming a trend more than a blip in the radar. The fact that a small bump in participation from minorities like African Americans and Hispanics could cement that is troublesome to an extent, especially because those communities are particularly tribal.
I have no doubt states would vote in laws that are unconstitutional if they could get away with it. The framers of the constitution knew this as well.
But the point is that it’s not necessarily a people’s problem, it’s a legal problem right now. Like if this would be left to the States, we’ll probably see a fairly different map on this issue right now.
But the supreme court doesn't act over night, nor does congress. Congress can pass a bill and it be signed into law, but if it's unconstitutional, it will be challenged and overturned.
I agree that the current polarization level is counterproductive. But, again, this is discussing the now. The political landscape in the US wasn’t like this 50 years ago, why assume it’ll look like this 50 years from now?
Historically these levels of polarization end up with either a very ugly event (see: civil war) or a long period of hegemony (see: Reagan/Bush admins).
As far as the SCOTUS, yes that’s how it works, but there’s already precedent from the court that the 2nd amendment (or any amendment really) is not beyond being regulated as long as it’s specifically tailored for some purpose, some of which are contemporary. For example, on Heller, some arguments centered around which weapons are most common for home self-defense. Weapons that clearly did not exist when the 2nd Amendment was written, and might no longer be the popular choice when and if that topic is revisited.
The term "immediate" is subjective. We only discuss it during these events. If that's any indication of what the rest of the country does, what does that tell you? Why would it change?
You and I (or ST) might only discuss this during these events, but the actual political machinery that sustains a lot of this (ie: NRA, anti-gun lobbies) work every day. They have to, because politics is by and large about public opinion.

recent US context:
The number of antisemitic incidents across the US as a whole rose 57% in 2017, according to an audit by the Anti-Defamation League (https://www.adl.org/media/11174/download), the largest single-year increase on record and the second highest number since the ADL started tracking such data in 1979.
FBI data for 2016 (https://ucr.fbi.gov/hate-crime/2016/topic-pages/victims), the last year for which figures are available, shows that 54.4% of victims of anti-religious hate crimes were Jewish, and 24.5% were Muslim.

Trash complains it’s unfair that Barack Obama was not blamed for Charleston church shooting :lol
The president’s divisive rhetoric has been harshly scrutinized following a bombing campaign that targeted Democrats
President Donald Trump complained to one of his Fox News supporters,
Laura Ingraham, :lol
about the fact that his rhetoric was being harshly scrutinized as a result of alleged pipe bomber Cesar Sayoc campaign against a number of liberal targets,
even though President Barack Obama wasn't criticized after a 2015 racially-motivated church shooting in Charleston, S.C.
"I was in the headline of The Washington Post,
my name associated with this crazy bomber.
They didn’t do that with President Obama with the church,
the horrible situation with the church — they didn’t do that," Trump told (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-complains-of-different-news-coverage-of-him-compared-to-obama-after-sc-church-massacre/2018/10/30/e6782186-dc2d-11e8-b3f0-62607289efee_story.html?utm_term=.d9021cd060c7) Ingraham on Monday
the perpetrator of that mass shooting was Dylann Roof, an avowed white supremacist who brandished Confederate iconography and was no lover of Obama.

Users of alt-right social media site Gab celebrate the Pittsburgh mass shooting (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/10/29/1808237/-Alt-right-social-media-site-Gab-users-celebrate-the-Tree-of-Life-mass-shooting)
Less than a day after news of the attack broke, many were celebrating on the platform.
One user, Brett Stevens, posted a poll with the “#treeoflifeshooting” hashtag, asking,
“What should the future of Jewish people in the West be?”
The answers were disturbing, with
35 percent voting for “genocide[.]”
Genocide was only the second most popular answer.
The first was “repatriation.”
It’s not clear where Gab users expect more than 5 million American Jews to go, but that’s probably not their top concern.
That’s not all:
User Brett Stevens also posted another poll asking,
“Do you support the Pittsburgh synagogue shooter, Robert Bowers?”
Almost 25 percent said they did.
Commenting on the poll, one user said,
“As long as Jews support the indiscriminate genocide of my race, fuck yeah I do.”
Another stated, “Robert Bowers literally did nothing wrong.”

embarrassed conservatives long to smear the thousands of mourning Pittsburgh protesters (https://www.politicususa.com/2018/10/30/thousands-protest-pittsburgh-trump-visit.html) who turned their backs on President Trump, who was asked NOT to come to Pittsburgh until all of the slaughtered had been buried.

That big anti-Trump protest today in Pittsburgh was organized by a group called IfNotNow,
whose goal is to end "the Israeli occupation" of Gaza & the West Bank.

Because that’s what really matters, right?
And besides this self-indulgent pat on the back,

I should have said "non-polarizing". or "not so polarizing". My comments weren't a commentary on a president's politics.
Just about the ratings.
I don't have any proof but I suspect a large part of CNN and FoxNews viewers watch to either 1) get pissed off about something and/or 2) make them feel like they won something.
Which doesn't make it wrong (from a business standpoint) for those networks to continue to take sides.

That's obviously going to be the first arrivals on a free speech platform. As more people come that is minimized. BTW, the data shows that gab has only 2.5x the "hate speech" of Twitter. That will go down if more users join.

Today, the FBI published its annual report (https://ucr.fbi.gov/hate-crime/2017/topic-pages/tables/table-1.xls) cataloging hate crimes for the previous calendar year. This year, as has been the case every year since the bureau began collecting these statistics in 1992, Jews topped the list. And it wasn’t close. Of 1,564 anti-religious hate crimes in 2017, 938 targeted Jews. In other words, Jews were subject to 60 percent of anti-religious hate crimes, despite constituting just 2 percent of the American population.

Trump’s Caravan Hysteria Led to This
The president and his supporters insisted that several thousand Honduran migrants were a looming menace—and the Pittsburgh gunman took that seriously.
Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida wondered (https://twitter.com/RepMattGaetz/status/1052629557826736129) whether George Soros—the wealthy Jewish philanthropist whom Trump (https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/19/politics/donald-trump-montana-speech/index.html) and several members of the U.S. Senate blamed for the protests (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/10/05/no-george-soros-isnt-paying-kavanaugh-protesters/?utm_term=.0273a95652aa) against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and who was recently targeted with a bomb—was behind the migrant caravan.
Chuck Holton told NRATV’s viewers (https://www.mediamatters.org/video/2018/10/19/nratv-correspondent-migrant-caravan-invasion-under-guise-migration/221750) that Soros was sending the caravan to the United States so the migrants could vote: “It’s telling that a bevy of left-wing groups are partnering with a Hungarian-born billionaire
Matt Schlapp pointedly asked (https://www.mediamatters.org/video/2018/10/22/cnn-host-calls-out-matt-schlapp-fearmongering-about-migrant-caravan-marauding-bands-invaders/221762) the anchor Alisyn Camerota, “Who’s paying for the caravan?
“Because of the liberal judges and other people that intercede,
including George Soros, :lol Jew Time! :lol
Trump is reportedly aware that his statements about the caravan are not true.
An administration official told The Daily Beast simply (https://www.thedailybeast.com/trumps-own-teams-know-his-caravan-claims-arent-true-dont-particularly-care?source=twitter&via=desktop),
“It doesn’t matter if it’s 100 percent accurate … This is the play.”
The “play” was to demonize vulnerable people with falsehoods in order to frighten Trump’s base to the polls.
. On Saturday morning, Shabbat, a gunman walked into the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh and killed 11 people.
The massacre capped off a week of terrorism, in which one man mailed bombs (https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/trump-bombs-florida-tweets/574108/) to nearly a dozen Trump critics and another killed two black people in a grocery store after failing to force his way into a black church (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/25/us/louisville-kroger-shooting.html).
the shooter, who blamed Jews (https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting/h_0c180f52c8d032fd47eef570cc5065c2) for the caravan of “invaders” and who raged about it on social media, made it clear that
he was furious at hias, founded as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, a Jewish group that helps resettle refugees in the United States.
“hias likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”
Ordinarily, a politician cannot be held responsible for the actions of a deranged follower.
But ordinarily, politicians don’t praise supporters (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/08/21/trump-says-fans-are-very-passionate-after-hearing-one-of-them-allegedly-assaulted-hispanic-man/?utm_term=.6f04a860f5d5) who have mercilessly beaten a Latino man as “very passionate.”
Ordinarily, they don’t offer to pay supporters’ legal bills if they assault protesters on the other side (https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/donald-trump-incitement-violence/).
They don’t praise acts of violence against the media (https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/10/trumps-desperate-endorsement-political-violence/573463/).
They don’t defend neo-Nazi rioters as “fine people. (https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/08/trump-defends-white-nationalist-protesters-some-very-fine-people-on-both-sides/537012/)”
They don’t justify sending bombs to their critics by blaming the media (https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/25/politics/trump-blames-media-for-anger-after-attacks/index.html) for airing criticism.
Ordinarily, there is no historic surge (https://www.adl.org/news/press-releases/anti-semitic-incidents-surged-nearly-60-in-2017-according-to-new-adl-report) in anti-Semitism, much of it targeted at Jewish critics (https://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/19/us/politics/anti-semitism-trump-supporters-twitter.html), coinciding with a politician’s rise.
And ordinarily,
presidents do not blatantly exploit their authority in an effort to terrify white Americans into voting for their party.
Trump did everything he could to fan the flames, and
nothing to restrain those who might take him at his word.
following Trump’s statements to their logical conclusion could lead to violence against his targets,
and it is only because most do not take it that way that the political violence committed on Trump’s behalf is as limited as it currently is.
The Tree of Life shooter criticized (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/27/us/robert-bowers-pittsburgh-synagogue-shooter.html) Trump for not being racist or anti-Semitic enough.
the shooter merely followed the logic of the president and his allies:
He was willing to do whatever was necessary to
prevent an “invasion” of Latinos planned by perfidious Jews,
a treasonous attempt to seek “the destruction of American society and culture.”
The apparent spark for
the worst anti-Semitic massacre in American history was a racist hoax inflamed by a U.S. president seeking to help his party win a midterm election.
he apparently chose to act in response to a political fiction that the president himself chose to spread and that his followers chose to amplify.

Trash is White Male Supremacist, and hates Jews, too
Trump Shut Programs to Counter Violent Extremism
The administration has hobbled the infrastructure designed to prevent atrocities like Pittsburgh.
What’s undeniable is that his administration has hobbled the infrastructure designed to prevent such murders.
In the waning days of Barack Obama’s administration, the Department of Homeland Security awarded a set of grants to organizations working to counter violent extremism, including among white supremacists.
One of the grantees was Life After Hate (https://www.dhs.gov/news/2017/01/13/statement-secretary-jeh-johnson-announcing-first-round-dhss-countering-violent), which The Hillhas called (https://thehill.com/policy/national-security/346552-trump-cut-funds-to-fight-anti-right-wing-violence) “one of the only programs in the U.S. devoted to helping people leave neo-Nazi and other white supremacy groups.”
Another grant went to researchers at the University of North Carolina (https://www.newsobserver.com/news/politics-government/article158205859.html) who were helping young people develop media campaigns aimed at preventing their peers from embracing white supremacy and other violent ideologies.
But soon after Trump took office, his administration canceled both of these grants (https://www.nytimes.com/2017/08/15/us/politics/right-wing-extremism-charlottesville.html).
In its first budget, it requested no funding for any grants in this field.
The cuts stem instead from two biases.
First, in keeping with their law-and-order mentality, Trump officials
would rather empower the police to arrest suspected terrorists
than work with local communities to prevent people from becoming terrorists in the first place, as the Office of Community Partnerships did.
Second, they believe the primary terrorist threat to Americans is jihadism, not white supremacy.
The Office of Community Partnerships committed the sin of working on both.

The gunman who killed 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue (https://apnews.com/article/pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting-ba843b83bf674d2603a07add574f13ea) in 2018 is eligible for the death penalty, a federal jury announced Thursday, setting the stage for further evidence and testimony on whether he should be sentenced to death or life in prison.
The government is seeking capital punishment for Robert Bowers, (https://apnews.com/article/pittsburgh-tree-life-synagogue-shooting-federal-trial-51a2f8a53f9285e8957b4e6a8b05818a) who raged against Jewish people online before storming the Tree of Life synagogue with an AR-15 rifle and other weapons in the nation’s deadliest antisemitic attack. The jury agreed with prosecutors that Bowers — who spent six months planning the attack and has since expressed regret that he didn’t kill more people — had formed the requisite legal intent to kill (https://apnews.com/article/pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting-death-penalty-eligibility-d20a4f7b7ec54ea6c32bd4e43178d353).
Bowers’ lawyers argued that his ability to form intent (https://apnews.com/article/pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting-antisemitism-judaism-23359e68988d7a31ade5c5a793d7e7fd) was impaired by mental illness and a delusional belief that he could stop a genocide of white people by killing Jews.

the (((Soros))) discourse egged on a pogrom of Jews and probably will again
When I ran into local Jewish activist Jonathan Mayo at a protest wearing an "Immigrant Justice is a Jewish Value" T-shirt from Bend the Arc, I was excited as a Jewish Pittsburgher to see it.
I ran into Mayo just a week before the 7th anniversary of the murder of 11 Jews on October 27, 2018, the Pittsburgh Synagogue Massacre. Every year on the anniversary, I find myself frustrated that few mention that the shooter, Robert Bowers, said that he targeted the organization for their support of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). The shooter accused local Jews of bringing in the caravan.
Mayo, who lived two blocks away from the massacre, said he likes to wear the shirt around the Squirrel Hill community, where he lives, to remind people of how the neighborhood's collective trauma was linked to Jewish support for immigrants' rights.
"I think we have to remember that, and I don't think enough people in my community do that," says Mayo. "It was a horrific antisemitic attack. But what was underneath that is the thing that is forgotten like the great replacement theory kind of things, that the Jews (are) bringing in these people. I mean that ‘the Jews shall not replace us,’ in Charlottesville. All of that lies underneath the motives of the shooter there."
Eleven Jews, from three different congregations that held services in the building, were killed that day in the largest Jewish massacre in United States history. One of those killed was Dr. Jerry Rabonwitz, a member of Dor Hadash, where I often attend High Holiday services.
Symone Saul had her bat mitzvah in Dor Hadash and knew Dr. Jerry Rabinowitz. She works for the Jewish immigrants' rights advocacy group Never Again Action and frequently likes to remind people of why her congregation was targeted during the massacre.
"It's something that I've been trying to continue to lift up because at the time of the shooting, the news was really flooded with the images of tens of thousands of immigrants walking to the US. They're calling it caravans," says Saul, who works for the group. "And it seems that the shooter Robert Bowers had been exposed to this great replacement theory, claiming the Jews want to replace white people by bringing people of color into the US. And so his response to these caravans was to blame and murder 11 Jews."
Saul says that the memory of those killed in the massacre has motivated her to get more involved in the immigrant rights struggle.
"I believe the best way to honor lives lost through acts of injustice is committing acts of justice. So that's how I try to honor the 11 human beings killed on October 27," says Saul.

National Review minicons sound off
The issue isn’t merely that Carlson “platformed” a white-nationalist influencer.
This framing allows Carlson and his defenders to portray the interview and others like it as an effort at open debate, as a good-faith attempt at engagement with alternative views.
The deeper problem is that Carlson didn’t actually challenge any of Fuentes’s noxious views that he has spelled out quite clearly over the years. Fuentes has engaged in Holocaust denial (https://x.com/SocDoneLeft/status/1618056072690008069), called Adolf Hitler “really f***ing cool (https://x.com/seanfeucht/status/1983208681551335936),” and said that if his movement gained power, it would execute (https://x.com/maxabrahms/status/1983258577704755460?s=46&t=8C988nxa60Pfx0sNWLpicA) “perfidious Jews.”
Carlson didn’t even need to go back through old clips to find objectionable statements. In his appearance, Fuentes stated that the “big challenge” to unifying the country against tribal interests was “organized Jewry in America,” and he expressed admiration for Soviet butcher Joseph Stalin. He did not receive any pushback from Carlson.
It also can’t be said that Carlson’s interviewing style is simply to let his guests speak. In June, Carlson held a combative interview with Senator Ted Cruz that descended into an extended shouting match. Why would Carlson choose to take an oppositional tack to a senator who has been fighting for conservatism for decades, but not to a podcaster who praises Stalin? The obvious answer is that Fuentes is an avowed Jew-hater while Cruz is a staunch supporter of Israel.
Carlson stated during his interview that he thinks Cruz, Mike Huckabee, and other figures who are Christian and support Israel have been infected by a “brain virus.” About these “Christian Zionists,” he said: “I dislike them more than anybody. Because it’s Christian heresy, and I’m offended by that as a Christian.”

The Texas GOP is far right and for some time has been bankrolled by bigoted billionaires
Former Texas House Speaker Joe Straus said on Thursday that Midland oil magnate Tim Dunn, one of the state’s most powerful and influential GOP megadonors, once told him that only Christians should hold leadership positions in the lower chamber.
Straus, a Republican who is Jewish, relayed the encounter in an interview with former Texas Tribune CEO Evan Smith at the LBJ School of Public Affairs. It appeared to be the first time Straus publicly confirmed the anecdote, which was first reported by Texas Monthly in a 2018 story (https://www.texasmonthly.com/news-politics/power-issue-tim-dunn-pushing-republican-party-arms-god/) that cited “Straus insiders.”
The alleged remarks came at a November 2010 meeting, shortly after Dunn’s political network had targeted many of the Democrats and moderate Republicans who had helped Straus ascend to the speakership the year before. With Straus poised to seek a second term as speaker the following January, he said he asked Dunn to meet in the hopes of finding common ground on “fiscal tax issues.”
But Dunn reportedly demanded that Straus replace “a significant number” of his committee chairs with tea party-aligned lawmakers backed by Dunn’s political advocacy group, Empower Texans. After Straus rebuffed the demand, the two began to talk about social policy, at which point Dunn allegedly said he believed only Christians should hold leadership posts.
“It was a pretty unsatisfactory meeting,” Straus said Thursday. “We never met again.”

shorter Ganz: the Groypers are winning
The Republican Party is being roiled by the public revelation of its Groyper problem. At the Republican Jewish Coalition meeting in Las Vegas (classy, right?), speakers inveighed against antisemitism in the party. Radio personality Mark Levin inveighed against Fuentes, Tucker, and Candace Owens. But if you watch the speech, it’s less bombastic than shrill. The fact is, Levin seems nervous. And he should be. The momentum is not on their side. Go on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F6zpgWyGKxo) and look at the comments. They are all anti-Israel or anti-Semitic. The groypers control the internet, the youth, and, therefore, the future.

this article is the most granular rundown I've seen on the fallout from Fuentes interview
Tucker Carlson hosted Nick Fuentes on his insanely popular podcast (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efBB0D4tf1Y) last week. The full interview garnered 17 million views on X.com (https://x.com/TuckerCarlson/status/1982948948185886862), 5 million views on YouTube, and no telling how many of his reported 2.6 million Spotify followers tuned in but Carlson was the #2 podcast on the service last week (https://podcastcharts.byspotify.com/).
For comparison, the top rated show on Fox News (the most watched cable news program) drew 3.7 million viewers (https://www.tvinsider.com/1219169/msnbc-cnn-fox-news-top-shows-ratings-newsnation-newsmax/).
The top rated news show on broadcast television is ABC’s World News Tonight which averages around 7.8 million viewers (https://www.adweek.com/tvnewser/week-of-oct-20-2025-evening-news-ratings/).
Tucker Carlson IS the American mainstream media in 2025. If he is platforming the frequently (https://nypost.com/2025/10/16/business/spotify-cans-nick-fuentes-podcast-for-breaking-hate-speech-rules/) cancelled (https://www.reuters.com/world/us/twitter-suspends-account-white-supremacist-nick-fuentes-day-after-restoration-2023-01-25/) Fuentes, that’s a big deal.

Jewish allies and national Jewish orgs bailing on Project Esther and Heritage
The Heritage Foundation’s marquee effort to combat antisemitism, a coalition known as Project Esther, is rapidly losing members following the conservative think tank’s public defense of Tucker Carlson after he gave a friendly interview to the white nationalist and antisemitic provocateur Nick Fuentes.
At least eight individuals and organizations affiliated with Heritage’s National Task Force to Combat Antisemitism, launched last year under the Project Esther banner, have resigned or threatened to do so, citing Heritage president Kevin Roberts’ decision to stand by Carlson and his description of the television personality’s critics as a “venomous coalition.”
The defections suggest that Project Esther — unveiled on the first anniversary of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack as a conservative “national strategy to counter antisemitism”— could be imploding.
And the four co-chairs of Heritage’s antisemitism task force said they were asking members to “give us additional time” to address the crisis, according to a message they sent to partners that was obtained (https://x.com/AudreyFahlberg/status/1985537199207596294) by the National Review.https://www.jta.org/2025/11/03/united-states/jewish-exodus-underway-from-heritage-foundations-antisemitism-initiative-over-tucker-carlson

The first public resignation from the task force came Sunday (https://www.jta.org/2025/11/03/united-states/jewish-lawyer-quits-heritage-foundations-antisemitism-task-force-over-tucker-carlson-defense?utm_source=JTA_Iterable&utm_campaign=JTA_DB&utm_medium=email) with an announcement from Mark Goldfeder, an Orthodox rabbi and the CEO of the National Jewish Advocacy Center, that he was quitting in protest of Roberts’ defense of Carlson.
“Elevating him and then attacking those who object as somehow un-American or disloyal in a video replete with antisemitic tropes and dog whistles, no less, is not the protection of free speech. It is a moral collapse disguised as courage,” Goldfeder wrote in a letter posted to X.
On Monday, the New York Post reported (https://nypost.com/2025/11/03/us-news/heritage-foundation-in-revolt-over-tucker-carlson-defense-after-controversial-nick-fuentes-interview-footsie-with-literal-nazis/) on the resignation of David Bernstein, author of “Woke Antisemitism” and founder of the Jewish Institute for Liberal Values, who had served on the Heritage task force. Bernstein said Roberts’ language felt like “a real attack against Jewish political agency on the American scene.”
“The phrase ‘venomous coalition aligned against him [Carlson]’—that’s me and any Jewish person who cares about condemning antisemitism,” Bernstein said. “It allows you to justify almost anything said in the name of political conservatism, and that empties it of all meaning.”

it's been pointed out that if any essential disagreement exists between Tucker and Fuentes, it's mainly over which Jews need to be targeted for elimination from society
This interview between Fuentes and Carlson is almost textbook. You have the antisemitism of the gutter: Fuentes. And you have the antisemitism of a declining aristocracy: Tucker comes from this preppy background. His father was an ambassador, his stepmother is a Swanson heiress.
He sees an America that’s not the way he wants it to be. It’s declining, it doesn’t look the way he looks, it has norms that he doesn’t share. And you have Fuentes, who dropped out of college, comes from a modest background. He is dripping with resentment to a world that he feels doesn’t have a place for him.
A self-described “proud incel.”
Yes. It’s also very interesting that he does not try to hide or pretend that he is not socially maladjusted in some way. That lends him authenticity and makes people gravitate toward it.
This meeting between Tucker and Fuentes symbolizes the kind of recognition between these two groups. In that interview, in that moment, it is the most perfect encapsulation of antisemitic politics — declining aristocracy and a dissatisfied mob. Bring them together and you have a kind of coalition in itself.

NY Young Republicans are having trouble distancing themselves from neo-nazis
“It’s deeply concerning that the New York Young Republican Club is planning to honor a regional co-chair of the far-right extremist AfD party at their upcoming gala,” Todd Gutnick, a spokesperson for the Anti-Defamation League, said in a statement. “The German AfD party has a disturbing history that includes antisemitic and xenophobic rhetoric. AfD has embraced the antisemitic ‘Great Replacement’ conspiracy, and its current leader, Alice Weidel, has denounced Germany’s dedication to Holocaust remembrance as a ‘guilt cult.’”

George Washington, true blue liberal
In his General Orders to the Continental Army (https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/99-01-02-11097), issued on the occasion of the end of the Revolutionary War in 1783, George Washington stated that one of the reasons the United States was founded was to create “an Asylum for the poor and oppressed of all nations and religions.” Other leading Founding Fathers—including James Madison and Thomas Jefferson—expressed similar sentiments (https://reason.com/volokh/2021/07/04/immigration-the-american-revolution-and-the-principles-of-the-declaration-of-independence/).
Washington sounded a similar theme in his famous 1790 letter to the congregation of the Rhode Island Touro Synagogue (https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/05-06-02-0135), in which he avowed that the United States has “an enlarged and liberal policy,” under which “All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship,” and that the U.S. government “gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.” America, he emphasized, went beyond “mere toleration” of Jews to granting them full equality. It could do so because American identity was based on universal liberal principles, not ethnic or religious particularism.

many are jumping ship to join Mike Pence's non-profit
Nearly the entire legal and economic policy staff of the Heritage Foundation is departing the conservative think tank, and many will be taking up posts (https://x.com/AmericanFreedom/status/2003111940709872006) at Advancing American Freedom (AAF), a nonprofit (https://advancingamericanfreedom.com/) founded in 2021 by former Vice President Mike Pence. The mass exodus represents a dramatic rebuke of Heritage President Kevin Roberts in the wake of his refusal (https://reason.com/2025/11/21/conservative-think-tanks-should-never-have-crawled-into-bed-with-tucker-carlson-in-the-first-place/) to retract an October video defending Tucker Carlson for conducting a friendly interview with the antisemitic influencer Nick Fuentes.
"Why these people are coming our way is that Heritage and some other voices and commentators have embraced big-government populism and have been willing to tolerate antisemitism," Pence told (https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/top-heritage-officials-flee-to-mike-pences-nonprofit-as-think-tank-fractures-28765f2b) The Wall Street Journal.
More than 30 employees at the Heritage Foundation's Institute for Constitutional Government, Ed Meese Center for Legal and Judicial Studies, Center for Data Analysis, Thomas A. Roe Institute for Economic Policy Studies, and Grover M. Hermann Center for the Federal Budget have resigned or were fired in the last few days. Those departing include Amy Swearer, who told Roberts he had lost her confidence as a leader during an all-staff meeting in November that leaked (https://freebeacon.com/politics/i-made-a-mistake-heritage-foundation-president-apologizes-to-staff-for-video-refusal-to-cancel-tucker-carlson-and-throws-shade-at-former-chief-of-staff/) to the press, and John Malcolm, a Heritage vice president and the foundation's top legal scholar, who was fired last Thursday after Roberts caught wind of the plan to leave for AAF, according to multiple sources. E.J. Antoni—who was briefly (https://edition.cnn.com/2025/09/30/politics/ej-antoni-nomination-withdrawn-bls) President Donald Trump's nominee for Commissioner of Labor Statistics—is staying on and will serve as acting director of several of the aforementioned teams.
The departures follow resignations (https://www.mediaite.com/media/news/breaking-two-more-heritage-foundation-board-members-resign-amid-tucker-fuentes-fallout/) by three Heritage Foundation trustees: Princeton professor Robby George, businessman Shane McCullar, and philanthropist Abby Spencer Moffat. Sources say Moffat, who serves as president and CEO of the Diana Davis Spencer Foundation, has also withdrawn millions of dollars in funding from Heritage—and that she's not the only one. (Some of that money may have been redirected to Pence's group; "AAF said it was able to raise more than $10 million in a few weeks to make the new hires," the Journal reports.) And last month an antisemitism task force cut ties (https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/06/us/politics/heritage-foundation-antisemitism-task-force.html) with the think tank.

It could do so because American identity was based on universal liberal principles, not ethnic or religious particularism.
https://www.theunpopulist.net/p/nationalism-is-driving-the-neo-rightsThe US isn't a Christian nation and never was
from the beginning the USA was a creedal liberal order
Last week, the American Enterprise Institute honored with its annual Irving Kristol Award the distinguished professor emeritus of history at Brown University, Gordon Wood. Wood is a preeminent American historian, especially well known for his detailed studies of the American revolution and founding.1 (https://www.thebulwark.com/p/amateur-hour-at-1600-pennsylvania-avenue-white-house-flailing?r=1emko&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web#footnote-1-179922064)
Wood’s extensive and impressive scholarship doesn’t fit into easy political categories, and in his long career, he has largely avoided opining on contemporary politics. At the AEI dinner, Wood pulled off the impressive feat of keeping the attention and interest of a D.C. audience for half an hour while never mentioning such passing preoccupations as Donald Trump, MAGA, JD Vance, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, or Zohran Mamdani. Wood limited his political remarks to noting that he had been an Adlai Stevenson voter in his first presidential election in 1956, but that, over the next couple of decades, he’d been “one of those liberals mugged by reality.”
Though he didn’t explicitly address today’s controversies, Wood had something important to say to us about today. He delivered his core message up front:
There has been some talk recently that we aren’t and shouldn’t be a creedal nation—that beliefs in a creed are too permissive, too weak a basis for for citizenship and that we need to realize that citizens with ancestors who go back several generations have a stronger stake in the country than more recent immigrants.
I reject this position as passionately as I can.
Wood went on to describe the efforts of American statesmen, especially in the early years of the republic, to deal with the fact that the United States was never “a nation like other nations.” He quoted John Adams’s doubts about this new nation where there was nothing like “the patria of the Romans, the Fatherland of the Dutch, or the Patrie of the French.” He noted Adams’s lament that the U.S. featured “such a Hotch potch of people, such an omnium gatherum of English, Irish, German, Dutch, Swedes, French, &c. that it is difficult to give a name to the Country.”
Immigration continued after the founding period, and the country became even more ethnically diverse. Yet Americans devised a way—thanks especially to Abraham Lincoln, “who found in Jefferson’s Declaration a solution to the great problem of American identity”—to forge “a bond that holds together the most diverse nation history has ever known.”
And so Wood concluded, “To be an American is not to be someone, but to believe in something. That is why we are at heart a creedal nation, and that is why the 250th anniversary of the Declaration next year is so important.”
(Do watch the talk or read the whole text here (https://www.aei.org/research-products/speech/2025-irving-kristol-award-presentation/), or read excerpts published in the Wall Street Journal here (https://www.wsj.com/opinion/why-america-is-a-creedal-nation-75676aa8?gaa_at=eafs&gaa_n=AWEtsqdenc8ZdcxKLvh8Kw8TrjvXbG0G3GSnyAuAHRcj uU5BB1pukhKGAJbz&gaa_ts=69258d75&gaa_sig=10vPoVDRbZipLO4EO29wqxvx8Gx51Qv8OvSKWcFSIN-RjwkFkdqh9D1ndAxPinmxLx_a6ZEXRniol3bSVF88Yg%3D%3D) .)
I’ll take the liberty of taking Wood’s conclusion one step further. If “to be an American is to believe in something,” then it is both urgent and important for us today to reject the nativism and ethnonationalism that has reared its ugly head. And it is both right and proper, as we celebrate the last Thanksgiving of our first 250 years, to be thankful that we live in an exceptional nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Synagogue torched in Mississippi
A fire heavily damaged Mississippi’s largest synagogue before dawn Saturday – the same house of worship in northeast Jackson that the Ku Klux Klan bombed in 1967 (https://www.isjl.org/mississippi-jackson-encyclopedia.html) because the rabbi supported civil rights.
The Jackson Fire Department, the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested a suspect Saturday night in the latest blaze after the fire department ruled it arson, according to lead investigator Charles Felton. Investigators did not immediately release the name of the suspect or the charges the person could face.
The fire was reported shortly after 3 a.m. at Beth Israel Congregation on Old Canton Road. No congregants were injured.
The library and administrative offices of Jackson’s only synagogue were reduced to charred ruins. Two Torahs were destroyed and five were damaged in the flames that erupted during Shabbat, the weekly Jewish day of rest, according to temple leaders. One Torah that survived the Holocaust was in a glass case and was undamaged in the fire.
Beth Israel has suspended services indefinitely.
