The case regarding whether or not a Maryland war memorial in the shape of a cross goes against a separation of church and state was accepted for final review by Supreme Court justices on Friday.

The controversial memorial, which stands in Bladensburg, Maryland, was previously deemed to be in violation of the Constitution by a federal appeals court in Virginia, who determined that it “has the primary effect of endorsing religion and excessively entangles the government in religion.”

In petitioning the nation’s highest court to take the case, Maryland officials who maintain the monument, otherwise known as the “Peace Cross,” insisted that what it’s meant to honor proves that its purpose is to portray a secular message of remembrance, not one of religion.

Should the appeals court’s decision be allowed to stand, it could potentially affect hundreds of similar monuments across the country and would force “the removal or dismemberment of a cherished war memorial that has served as a site of solemn commemoration and civic unity for nearly a century.”

The cross, finished in 1925, was erected in remembrance of 49 local men who died in World War I. A plaque on the cross' base lists the names of those soldiers, and both faces of the cross have a circle with the symbol of the American Legion, the veterans organization that helped raise money to build it.

The memorial’s location is roughly five miles from the Supreme Court.

Those in favor of the statue argued that earlier Supreme Court rulings determined that monuments, particularly longstanding ones, which incorporate religious symbolism to send a secular message did not go against the Constitution.

The shape of the “Peace Cross,” which they maintain falls into that category, was picked as a means to bare a likeness to cross-shaped grave markers used for soldiers buried in American cemeteries overseas, supporters said.

The American Humanist Association, the group against the memorial who, along with three local residents, filed a 2014 lawsuit against Maryland officials, argue that the symbol "discriminates against patriotic soldiers who are not Christian, sending a callous message to non-Christians that Christians are worthy of veneration while they may as well be forgotten."

The organization attempted to persuade the Supreme Court against hearing the case, arguing that the appeals court's ruling is specific to the Bladensburg memorial and doesn't threaten any other monuments.

Arguments for the case are expected to be heard in early 2019.

The Battle of Varna was the first battle in which Polish arms crossed those of the invading Ottomans. Responding to the appeals of help from the Serbs and Bulgarians and a general appeal from the Pope to all Europeans to rush to the aid of Bulgaria which was being ravaged by the Ottoman Jihadis, the Poles joined in large numbers to challenge the Ottoman at Varna.

Not necessarily. He used the term "need". Christians aren't about need. They believe God is, and their need isn't about his existence. If anything they exist to please him, not the other way around. As an atheist, even I understand this. It's from that perspective that Philo is wrong.

Christians believe they are born into sin, and God through grace has offered a path to salvation through Jesus Christ. This means that Christians (believing in Christ as the eternal savior and son of God) have already met the conditions, so there's no need. They then have to honestly attempt to walk the path of righteousness. This is where need arises. They need strength to accept their own short comings, something many cannot do even non-Christians.

These are basic tenets of Christianity. So they don't need the god to exist. They already accept this to be undeniable truth. They need spiritual and emotional comfort that comes from the delusion that they will live forever (not perish, but have everlasting life). Death is hard to accept, and some have found a creative way to meditate themselves into this grand delusion. At best it's a delusion. At worst a mental illness, but then the "sad existence" depends on which side you're looking from. They think atheists are doomed to eternal hellfire, and we have orgies and kill babies.

Some say that without a divine cause there's no real purpose to life. Everything can simply be opinion so completely subjective. In that case, feeling a purpose can meet the "purpose" requirement.

Atheists can be anyone who doesn't believe a god exists. You can imagine them as whatever you like.

It's ironic that you're telling me I shouldn't judge someone online when I'm talking to someone who literally said every atheist makes a point to talk about his/her atheism. Someone with even an average spectrum of acquaintances, inclusive of atheists, would have a hard time claiming this. "Every single (X) does (Y)" is typically something you hear from people who don't really know a lot of (X)'s. So I'm pretty confident in my guess, especially given your friend's history here.

SCOTUS’ Bladensburg Cross Ruling is a Church-State Mess

Alito’s majority opinion is bereft of both principle and reason.

He could have been more concise and lost little nuance by simply writing:

All told, there were seven separate opinions, concurrences and dissents, 87 pages, and odd bedfellows in a fractured, scattershot ruling. Only one thing is clear:

the justices added no clarity to this area of the law, even though seven justices eventually voted to uphold the cross.

the court seeks to reverse engineer politically popular outcomes.

At oral argument, justices and attorneys attacked Lemon repeatedly,

but continued to come back to its core principles:

no religious purpose, no religious effect, and no entangling the government with religion.

the outcome of applying the Lemon test is clear—as Ginsburg put it,

“The principal symbol of Christianity around the world should not loom over public thoroughfares,

suggesting official recognition of that religion’s paramountcy”

the scattered, intellectually impoverished opinions coming from the justices

who voted in favor of Christian nationalism and

betrayed one of the founding principles (https://rewire.news/religion-dispatches/2019/02/25/scotus-likely-to-support-memorial-cross-should-we-even-care/) that has made this nation great:
