So, SI came up with their all-star rookie team to try and beat the Spurs. Now I put it to you, the educated Spur-fan.... create a team to beat the Spurs of this year, under a slightly more difficult set of circumstances than SI had. Using this year's salary cap, projected at 61.7 million as the limit for the total salary of your 12-person team, design a team with NO rookie contracts on it, and NO SPURS players on it, that can beat the Spurs of this year. That will be slightly more difficult, given that even these Spurs still have a few rookie contracts.... but let's see how good you are. Design your team and discuss why it could beat our team in SA.

Click on the team you want and find the player. It's fairly up to date.

Discussing the acquisition of players who currently are not on the Spurs? Now that's never been done before. Think it'll work?

Lebron, D.Howard, Gordon, JHoward= rookie contracts. Gasol is making close to 11M, etc.

C: Dan Gadzuric .............. $4,750,000
PF: Rasheed Wallace......... $10,260,000
SF: Ron Artest................. $6,500,000
SG: Kobe Bryant .............. $15,946,875
PG: Chauncey Billups ........ $5,909,800

DeShawn Stevenson - $2,750,000
Devin Brown - $2,500,000
Earl Boykins - $2,740,000
Greg Buckner - $1,974,074
Wesley Person - $1,800,000
Chris Mihm - $3,796,875
Brian Scalabrine - $2,500,000

Not the greatest bench in the world, so you'd have to count on the starters staying away from foul trouble/ejections...

Certainly would be a media wet dream team though.

C Ben Wallace 6.5
PF Jermain O'neal 16.5
SF Ron Artest 6.5
SG Shane Battier 4.9
PG Damon Jones 3.5

C2 M Doleac 2.65
PF2 A. McDysse 5.5
PF3 Shareef Abdur Rahim 5.0
SF2 D Brown 2.5
SG2 D. Anderson 1.67
PG2 Bobby Jackson 3.375
PG3 Earl Boykins 2.75

Total: 61.345 M

Team would have trouble scoring out of the backcourt a bit, but runs 12 men deep, and could lock down on almost anyone. Good defenders at 1-5, and a true post threat in Jermain O'neal. Between Battier and Artest, the team should be able to lock up any good swingmen, and Jones gives a good outside shooting option. I think a team like this one could give our own Spurs team a run for their money over secen games, but its still hard for me to pick against my hometown team. Spurs in 7.

As I said in another thread it's pretty amazing how you have to pick and chose to come up with a roster of non-rookie contracts that at the same price might (and most of these won't) match the Spurs

... and btw this proves Marcus Bryant's contention of just how cheap the Spurs are. They should be ashamed for putting together such a cost effective team.

You Pick 4 Of My Players 3 That Are Starters

kobe, ben are winners. steve is playoff tested and makes almost any decent guy a lot better. Artest is almost there with these guys. Only exception is SAR as far as playoffs are concerned but the guy can ball at that level.

Give me Earl/Marquis/Darius/Nenad over Gary/Sjax/Jeff/Vlad foster any day.
