... Would be a loss for the Spurs.

I was talking to my cousin yesterday about how worse than expected (by any standard) Patty Mills has been and how much his value (if any) has lowered.
And this question came to us.

In what trade that the Spurs send Patty Mills as the center of the trade, almost player for player, would the Spurs end up in the loss column?

We couldn't find many examples if any, that matches Patty's salary.

Mills for a 2020 second round pick. That will be the first year 18 year olds can be drafted and a lot of talent in that one draft.

I don't think you can find a worse player in his price range

There aren't many horrible contracts in his price range because the definition for what a team can get in his price range has changed. He's making something a lot closer to the MLE now than it was a few years ago. MLE guys tend not to be bad players. You have horrible contracts that are worth twice his APY though. It's a joke to pretend like Mills has the worst contract in the league when Nic Batum is still playing and John Wall's extension is about to kick in.

Anyways, both Plumlees are bad players who make what Mills makes. With a healthy rotation, a straight trade for either would make the Spurs worse, especially since it would encourage the Spurs to play big.

Mills for any wing with some length and at least a smidgen of athleticism, who can play defense and occasionally score.

Mills has some value left, but I think teams would want a draft pick to absorb the contract. It unfortunately is an escalating backend contact.

Disagree on that one, miles plumlee indeed makes similar money as Mills but has one less year in contract. Id take that deal!
He'll be a expiring next year and allows you to use Gasol in a deal.

Mills is okay at backup shooting guard, and playing along an athletic help. The problem starts when he is relegated to PG position. He can generate scores fast.

Mills for Wilson Chandler makes a lot of sense. Philly needs shooting and we need wings. But now with Saric gone Chandler is starting, so who knows if Philly would give him up. His contract is expiring though, so maybe they'll try to move him before the deadline

Lets keep the challenge in mind. It's to find a trade for Patty that would make the team worse.

I thought of this trade too. I think Patty would be a great fit for the 76ers. I agree with your logic that Chandler probably isn’t on the block. By doing the trade, they could keep Patty and sign Butler to a max level contract. JJ Redick and Chandler expire this year. They would have to take something like MLE to stay on the team next year with all the money going to Butler.

I just went through every roster and the worst players in his price range that I could find were Austin Rivers, Mason Plumlee & Tony Snell which are probably still an upgrade
