View Full Version : At What Point Does PATFO Admit Changes Need to Be Made?

Nothing we can really do this year. I wonder though if we could get either Lonzo or Fultz for our Toronto pick. Maybe we can make something out of those youngin's. And yes I know that they suck, but is the 28th pick really gonna be any better?

"Now you look at a stat sheet after a game and the first thing you look at is the threes. If you made threes and the other team didn't, you win. You don't even look at the rebounds or the turnovers or how much transition D was involved. You don't even care. That's how much an impact the three-point shot has and it's evidenced by how everybody plays." Gregg Popovich
"The inside game is kaputski," Popovich explained without helping with the spelling.
"You've got to have downhill players, you've got to have people that can penetrate and kick, you've got to have people who can switch, you've got to have big guys who can play little guys," he said.
"These days there's such an emphasis on the three because it's proven to be analytically correct," Popovich Monday offered with what appeared to be a sneer. "Now you look at a stat sheet after a game and the first thing you look at is the threes. If you made threes and the other team didn't, you win. That's how much an impact the three-point shot has and it's evidenced by how everybody plays."
"I hate it, but I always have," Popovich said even as he's adjusted over the years. "I've hated the three for 20 years. That's why I make a joke all the time (and say) if we're going to make it a different game, let's have a four-point play. Because if everybody likes the three, they'll really like the four. People will jump out of their seats if you have a five-point play. It will be great. There's no basketball anymore, there's no beauty in it. It's pretty boring. But it is what it is and you need to work with it."

I sort of agree with Pop on how the three point shot has ruined the game, but I also think he overstates it here for dramatic effect. Milwaukee has figured out a way to play to Giannis's strength (attacking the basket) and still shoot threes. Golden State relies on Draymond Green to do all the things other than shooting threes. Toronto has Siakam and Ibaka in the starting line up, neither good three point shooters. I think what the rest of the NBA has caught up on is that the three point shot isn't a novelty-- it's a shot that makes objective sense when it comes to scoring. Larry Bird was considered the best three point shooter of his day, but never averaged more than 3.3 attempts per game. In today's NBA, Bird's coach would would chastise him for not shooting more threes.

Gasol is an expiring next year. They should wait out till december when a Barton becomes available. They have a couple plausible trades but i think the biggest thing is they get two kinds of players. 3&D and a guy that can drive to the basket off the bench. Iirc Barton is making 10 a year, and if hes healthy should be able to be the guy attacking now they just need a 3&D

I love that this is the same man who coached the "greatest power forward" in TD yet destroyed how that position is played, and that very same man showed the blue print to the entire NBA of how the three point shot can be used to crush teams with talents such as Durant and Westbrook, in OKC, and LeBron, Wade, and Bosh in Miami. Games 3, 4, and 5 of the 2014 finals changed the NBA forever! Golden State is just running what the Spurs used to run in 2013 and 2014 with better shooting personnel! 4 perimeter players, all live, with abilities to shot, drive and kick, and play defense, and 1 big for passing and defense. And the PF is no longer TD but Diaw or Draymond! Driving to the basket and kicking for threes is more profitable than midrange. Popovich made it work, where guys like D'Antoni still haven't cracked the code.
But Pop is not adjusting to what this franchise created that the modern NBA is embracing. Your scouting has to change, your play calling has to change, your focus of what is the most important things in a game to win has to change! He's already wrecked how bigs are used and looked at in the NBA yet he still stubbornly believes LMA is a centerpiece! Your transition defense, rebounding, and turnovers can be overcome if you have the personnel to hit the three because you should be in the business of winning and not what you think beautiful basketball should be as taught to you by Larry Brown!! Every one of those quotes just lends more credence to why Patricia Holt needs to have a face to face talk with Pop and transition him from coaching and making personnel decisions for the Spurs after this year regardless of record. He is not a good fit for how the modern NBA game needs to be played. I would also say he is not a good handler of the modern player either. Danny Green is a great example. Danny isn't looking over his shoulder anymore, he's not scared and he's playing like it. I know a lot of you think Bertans is crap, but Pop is misusing him terribly. Sean Elliott on numerous broadcasts last year would say Davis needed to be on the floor more and getting more touches, but Pop wouldn't do it on a consistent basis. And I think Sean knows just as much basketball as TD, TP, DROB, or Manu.
Since the end of the 2007 Championship, the Spurs have one additional, and some would say their most memorable, championship. At the end of this year that will be 12 years. Some could say we should have gotten more than just one with the collection of talent the Spurs had from 2012 through 2017. But, since that can't be changed, it's the future that needs to be planned for now. For me, especially after how the season ended last year, I would have asked Pop to transition away from coaching the franchise and just concentrate with RC on front office, and installed Messina as coach. But it definitely needs to happen after this year, and Pop needs to relinquish control over everything now. He was the greatest coach for his time, but that time is now done.

He should have retired with TD, leaving the door open for Bud to make a return(as head coach this time). Bud has the Bucks playing basketball the right way while Pop is still stuck in the early 2000s.

why is that term "patfo" still being thrown around? There is no such thing as a front office. There is Popovich. He's the ceo, president, gm, and coach. Bufford is a figure head. Do you really believe a collective organization of minds actually sat around and came up with the conclusion to have $100 million tied up in Gasol and Mills? There are no checks and balances in this organization. What popovich wants, no one tells him "no" because he has brought 5 rings here.

I am frankly amazed at how much bullshit you managed to cram into one post. Bravo.

If we really want to tank or conversely, if we want to shake things up and still have some hope for the season, it seems LMA is the guy that has to be moved. What teams would be interested in him? I think Indiana and Portland would make offers... are there others?

I'm not opposed to moving Aldridge. You would just have to receive a very good prospect in return or have a good post player to fill the gap, which I don't see happening.

Meh - Spurstalk is a very small minority in the scope of the Spurs fanbase. Most of the fanbase probably doesn't care about the product on the court since the Spurs are the only show in town. This isn't LA we're talking about.
Hell you even see it with half the posters here who wouldn't say one negative thing about Pop or the FO, still giving them a pass because of past success.
Pop and RC have a lifetime pass, you won't see real change until one or both are no longer in charge.
What you're seeing now is where they were trending towards in the early 2010s before they lucked into a generational player like Kawhi.
Without the leadership of Manu and Timmy, things are only going to get worse until you see actual change in the leadership roles.

Just remember. At the end of the year the team that finishes second will be no better off than where we end up.
Except they will undoubtedly have a much better roster. :lol

Tanking would involve popovichs' playoff streak to end. So he'd rather continue 1st round exits and leave us in shambles as long as he's remembered as the guy with the longest playoff streak that never ended
he won't make the Playoffs with this roster

I can see somehow getting spanked on the road after a road trip like the one the Spurs just had, but at home??? Something needs to happen. Players and coaches need to be held accountable.
