Going for 3 wins in a row tonight as we host an awful 4-23 Suns team that have lost 9 straight and 12 of their last 13. Bertans remains Doubtful, but Cunningham is listed as Probable after missing last game with an abdominal strain. No excuses not to win this one handily at home. Let’s get it.

Thanks for the thread and this update as always Bat... I wonder if Davis has had a family illness or something more delicate. Not that prying eyes need to know, but so close to the holidays... I hope he and family are alright.
Edit: I just say Walker IV is out. This would have been a perfect game with possible lots of garbage time to give him a few minutes. Metu has played some, I don't see why a healthy Walker can't take some minutes here or there in a game like this. :deadhorse

One of the most frustrating things they were up to was the "one step forward, two steps back" thing they had going.

I'm hoping we can contain the Nash/Staudamire PNR. Thats been killing us. I'm sure Pringles is going to push the 8 second or less offense on our #1 Defense again.
But they don't have much of a D, Timmy will have his way with Amare. Parker will get in the paint at will and Manu will probably go for 45pts again.

NBA Trade Ideas for League's Most Desperate Buyers
...
San Antonio Spurs Receive: Allen Crabbe, Spencer Dinwiddie
Brooklyn Nets: Pau Gasol (http://bleacherreport.com/pau-gasol), Quincy Pondexter
A lot has to fall into place for this trade to pique the interests of both parties.
The Nets aren't looking to move Spencer Dinwiddie. He became extension-eligible Dec. 8, and they're hoping to keep him around long term, per Wojnarowski (http://www.wfuv.org/content/espn-nba-insider-adrian-wojnarowski-joins-one-one). But D'Angelo Russell is a restricted free agent this summer, and they have to start thinking about Caris LeVert's next contract (extension-eligible in July).
Thoroughly reinvesting in a core that hasn't yet needled its way into the postseason discussion is out of the question. The Nets are still rebuilding, and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson is headed for restricted free agency as well. They can't pay everyone. The Dinwiddie-Russell combination feels like an either-or situation.
Brooklyn could try parlaying one of them into a first-round pick. That'll be tough. Plenty of teams have money to pitch them this summer, and front offices are hesitant to pony up assets for non-stars nearing hefty raises. Dinwiddie is especially hard to evaluate as a trade asset. He's not a restricted free agent, so if the Nets don't give him an extension, he can walk free and clear.
Turning him into extra cap space is enticing if they believe in their curb appeal. Subbing out Allen Crabbe's $18.5 million salary next year with Pau Gasol's $6.7 million guarantee—that number could go down in a potential buyout—gives them a cakewalk to more than $50 million in spending power if they don't overpay Russell.
Crabbe is an integral part of the rotation, but he's a standstill specialist who doesn't do much else. The Nets overvalued him in 2016 free agency (admittedly, so did yours truly), and then again when they traded for him in 2017. They shouldn't make that mistake again.
The Spurs, meanwhile, are in a weird spot. FiveThirtyEight (https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2019-nba-predictions/) gives them less than a 5 percent chance of making the playoffs. They could throw in the towel and look to regroup next year with a high draft pick, but they prioritized a win-now centerpiece, DeMar DeRozan, in the Kawhi Leonard trade. They also cannot bank on much changing between now and next year, aside from Dejounte Murray's return.
"But it's not like the rest of their books clear up this summer," Vice Sports' Michael Pina (https://sports.vice.com/en_us/article/8xpd5v/the-spurs-need-to-tank-the-season) wrote. "Patty Mills, Davis Bertans, Marco Belinelli, Bryn Forbes, Derrick White, and Jakob Poeltl are all under contract in 2020. Instead of selling off [LaMarcus] Aldridge and DeRozan, dangling Rudy Gay or Belinelli in an attempt to get younger while increasing their shot at a higher pick makes sense. What doesn't is heading the other way, trading an asset for more immediate help just to make the playoffs."
Going the Crabbe-Dinwiddie route would be a nice middle ground. Paying Crabbe next season isn't a huge deal when the Spurs won't have cap space until 2020 or 2021 anyway, and they flat-out need wings. Dinwiddie gives them another shot creator who doesn't truncate their spacing, and his length affords him honorary wing status against certain defensive matchups.
San Antonio would have to make this deal with the intention of keeping him. That's not a problem. Dinwiddie can work as a sixth man or backcourt starter beside Murray, with DeRozan remaining at the 3, into 2019-20 and beyond.

receiving Spencer would be very good (he can play in 3 positions) but I do not see this happening, Crabbe only has one more year so it would not be a poison contract or something

Yeah, that seems like a crazy stat. Any other year, we'd be in the cellar at 11th..but even 14th place is literally closer to 1st than it is to 15th right now.
I also read a stat that 14 out of the 15 toughest remaining Strength of Schedules currently belong to Western teams, which makes sense...the West is overloaded with talent and everyone is duking it out.
The standings are probably going to change a hundred times over by the end of the season. If the Spurs actually manage to put something together with this group, we could still be top 4. If not, we could be bottom 4. It's not worth even trying to put a percentage to it.

to paraphrase or Cliffs
"Not Like Pop can waive his magic wand"
"How did SA front Office end up with a dearth of talent"
"where ONE GUY (Dejuante) missing makes you a bottom 2 Defense""I thought the SYSTEM was supposed to make them a great Defensive team always, isn't that what Pop is KNOWN for?'
"Rick(Carlisle) has THE RIGHT GUYS PLAYING AT THE RIGHT POSITIONS AT THE RIGHT TIME"
Ended by saying the SA and Pheonix game will be an offensive explosion because both teams play no D.
There are so many stupid statements in there, I don't know where to begin.
The only thing I will call out is that the Spurs not only lost their All-Defense point guard (Murray), but also lost 2 All-NBA defenders (Kawhi and Green), a sneakily defensive player (Anderson), and are also out one of their rim protectors (Pau) and another young defensive prospect (Walker).
Let any team go through that kind of changeover, and have a solid defense after 20 games.

I was wondering...did Marco shoot all these crazy off balance shots super often on his previous stint with us? I remember some, but not nearly as much as he does it these days. I was wondering...did Marco shoot all these crazy off balance shots super often on his previous stint with us? I remember some, but not nearly as much as he does it these days. Maybe it's his way of compensating with losing a step. Seems every other shot is extremely off balance/off one leg, etc...not commenting on this game, just in general.
It's bewildering, he didn't even shoot that out of control last season with Brett Brown's Sixers. He even had a couple of pivotal shooting games that helped them advance to the second round. He gets together with Pop and Messina and all discipline vanishes. True prodigal pet status.

Poeltl is no joke.
Crazy how far he’s come in a month tbh. Literally 4 weeks ago STers we’re saying what shit player he was and that they couldn’t believe we traded for him instead of one of the other Raptors role players. But he’s showing he can play effectively at this level, and he just turned 23 a couple months ago. He’s 4-5 years from his prime tbh.

@Toronto he played even better, but Siakam, Van Vleet and others were more Flashy so his performances were not as acknowledged as others. In San Antonio it seems he gets a greater focus. An damn he is a presence at the glass today.

I think that was his first game with the Spurs and he made 6 3s or something. He looked like a real find by the FO after bouncing around the league. I don't think he ever hit more than one in any game afterwards and was soon on his way somewhere else. Never could figure that out.

Possibly, but it will depend on how competitive the team remains over the next two or three seasons. I could see him leaving after this or sticking around to help develop Murray, Walker, White, Poetl, Metu and whomever the next (two possible) 1st round pick(s) is/are.
Even with all the shit he receives here, he's still has more basketball knowledge than any current NBA coach, has a keen eye for coaching hires (who is his successor?) and is still a solid NBA coach.

road success is nearly always a predictor of playoffs success (at least past the first round)
So look at road record to see which teams are really strong.
