Trump Voters Believe Trump Will Still Build the Wall, and Mexico Will Pay For It

By a three-to-one margin most people who voted for Donald Trump believe he will still build a border wall and make Mexico pay for it, :lol

the level of confidence that Trump voters have that he will keep his biggest campaign promise has been mostly stable over the past two years. :lol

building the wall is tied with “draining the swamp” for first place. :lol

Thirty nine percent of poll respondents said those

are the top two priorities they want Trump to accomplish during his presidency. :lol

How Trump’s government shutdown affects the average American

Even a "partial" government shutdown does damage. Trump promised to own the fallout.

Almost 400,000 federal workers are furloughed without pay,

and the shutdown

impacts basic government functions like
tax collection,
transportation, and
even domestic security —
including border security.

The partial shutdown closes a number of important federal agencies:

Departments of Agriculture,
Homeland Security,
Interior,
State,
Housing and Urban Development,
Transportation,
Commerce, and
Justice.

Federal workers — who aren’t concentrated in D.C. but working at agencies and offices across the country — are often hit hard by shutdowns.

Thousands of federal workers make less than $45,000 a year, and going without a paycheck or several could force those households to dip into savings.

about 420,000 federal workers who are considered essential will be forced to work without pay, including

42,000 Coast Guard staffers and
thousands of U.S. Forest Service firefighters,
air traffic controllers, and
railroad safety inspectors,

Most food safety inspectors (https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2018/01/essential-food-safety-inspections-continue-during-shutdown/) — those who are responsible for catching the next E. Coli outbreak (https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2018/12/20/wegmans-cauliflower-recall-fresh-vegetable-mixes-may-have-e-coli/2373494002/) — will be forced to work without pay.

Based on Trump’s detailed diagram of his slat wall, here is some advanced mathematics

https://www.washingtonpost.com/resizer/daCzxV2RAcXhRVrVO64sgwH1Gr0=/1484x0/arc-anglerfish-washpost-prod-washpost.s3.amazonaws.com/public/PJYAPHPM35CGLMJFJUFJ2IZ2VI.jpg By our calculations:

The slats are about 10 inches wide.
The gaps are nine inches.
The fence is 341 inches tall — or about 28.4 feet — with 13-inch spikes on top.

which leaves 1,366.8 miles.

The result?

We need about 4.6 million steel slats to cover that ground.

At a height of 28.4 feet and a presumed thickness of one inch, each slat requires a bit less than 2 cubic feet of steel.

For all of the slats, we’d need about 9 million cubic feet of steel.
As CNBC notes, that

steel is a lot pricier (https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/21/-trump-tariffs-would-make-a-steel-slat-border-wall-much-more-costly.html) than it was a year ago, thanks to the tariffs Trump imposed on foreign steel.

At the beginning of 2018, this barrier would have cost 25 percent less.

Most drugs that cross that border illegally already come through (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/04/25/the-1-reason-why-trumps-wall-wont-fix-the-drug-problem/) ports of entry

What’s more, a barrier with nine-inch gaps seems like it might allow for pretty easy transfer of bulky packages, without having to throw them 28 feet in the air to clear the wall.

an nine-inch gap wouldn’t necessarily keep people out

a prisoner in a jail in Tennessee escaped (https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1333395/Skinny-inmate-escapes-prison-squeezing-cell-bars.html) his cell by covering himself with grease and squeezing between bars set 4.5 inches apart.

In China, people who pass through a gap of 5.9 inches at a restaurant eat for free (https://www.thestar.com.my/news/regional/2018/05/29/want-a-discount-try-squeezing-through-narrow-metal-bars-in-this-chinese-restaurant/).

Update: A civil engineer wrote in to note that, at current prices of $160 per cubic foot,

the steel alone would cost about $1.5 billion --

excluding steel that would need to be used to extend the slats into the ground.

She also noted that a 1-inch-thick wall wouldn’t be terribly sturdy.

The GOP Ends Its One-Party Rule In Shambles

The government is literally shut down as Republicans get ready to hand over the House to Democrats.

Former Rep. David Jolly (R-Fla.), who left Congress in 2017 and recently gave up his party affiliation (https://www.tampabay.com/florida-politics/buzz/2018/10/15/former-congressman-quits-gop/), said the Republican Party’s unified control of government was “defined by remarkably damaging wins and complete capitulation of separation of powers.”

"Congress spent two years behaving as a political committee of the president,

not a branch of government empowered with independence by the Constitution."

ACA turned out to be far more popular than they anticipated and repealing it was far harder (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/democrats-congress-obamacare-win-midterms_us_5bdc9b23e4b04367a87c7a5b) than expected as well ― despite controlling both chambers of Congress.

Congress’ biggest legislative accomplishment was passing the new tax law, but it fell far short of what was promised.

There were deep, permanent cuts for corporations, and a more modest cut for individuals that expires at the end of 2025 (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/gop-tax-bill_us_5b99781ae4b0162f4733a701).

The tax bill was not as popular as Republicans expected, and they largely abandoned it as a campaign message.

If our national deficit this year really is $1Trillion at a time when unemployment has been low for multiple years, then I'm not sure those corporate tax rate cuts are going to stay permanent. With an economy this strong, a well run government might even be running surpluses right now as was the case in the late 1990's.

After what happened last time? The habit of punching left is strongly ingrained.

The first casualty is policies popular in the party and outside of it, the second is centrist/corporate Dem candidates in general elections.

There are good reasons the Dems lost 1000 seats nationwide in the last decade, favoring the priorities of the corporate donor class and other rich folks over the broader public is one of them.

Honestly I hate articles like this. A congressman's voting record on bills that contain certain legislation is not necessarily a predictor of his potential platform in a different office, particularly the office of President. There's more nuance to voting on legislation. You have to consider what may have been in it for his district.

Winehole23
12-24-2018, 01:36 PM
That's fair, a local voting record might not predict what a national candidate runs on.

Likewise, his/her campaign might not faithfully reflect the priorities of the officer, once elected.

Looking at the voting record might not be reliably predictive, but the significance isn't zero either. The hunch that Beto is a malleable centrist rather than a committed populist might explain the enthusiasm two years away from the election, inside the beltway and among big money donors.

spurraider21
12-24-2018, 03:33 PM
No, but I do remember the time you told me the Constitution gives us separation of Church and State.
it does

The First Amendment includes:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

then Thomas Jefferson said

Believing with you that religion is a matter which lies solely between Man & his God, that he owes account to none other for his faith or his worship, that the legitimate powers of government reach actions only, & not opinions, I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should "make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof," thus building a wall of separation between Church & State.

The Supreme Court has taken that exact quote from Thomas Jefferson and said this:

Coming as this does from an acknowledged leader of the advocates of the measure, it may be accepted almost as an authoritative declaration of the scope and effect of the amendment thus secured.

In another case, the Supreme Court also said this:

In the words of Jefferson, the clause against establishment of religion by law was intended to erect "a wall of separation between church and State."

‘He’s messing with people’s lives’: Bitter federal workers pound Trump for shutdown over a ‘a temper tantrum for a wall’

YOU CANNOT withhold a government employee’s wages and keep it.

Trump is so delusional that

he thinks the money he’s not paying them is going into some sort of slush fund

that he can then use to build the entire pointy (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2018/12/23/1821266/-New-advances-in-pointy-enable-Trump-s-bold-new-border-fence-design) wall.

Nancy Pelosi hilariously mocks Trump as his border wall degenerates into little more than a ‘beaded curtain’

Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the likely House Speaker come January when Democrats take over the chamber, joked that Trump’s border wall has been reduced from a cement barrier to a “beaded curtain,” (https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2018/12/25/government-shutdown-donald-trump-democrats-odds-over-border-wall/2409226002/)

“He says ‘we’re going to build a wall with cement and

Mexico’s going to pay for it’

while he’s already backed off of the cement –

now he’s down to, I think, a beaded curtain or something,” Pelosi told USA Today.

“I’m not sure where he is.”

“That loser couldn’t even get Mexico to pay for a beaded curtain,” journalist Joshua Holland wrote,

“and you can get ‘em cheap down there.”

Shutdown hits poor hardest: Food stamp office cut by 95 percent

Department of Agriculture says the office that helps the neediest with food relief has been virtually shut down

SNAP benefits are expected to remain available in January and Child Nutrition programs are expected to continue into February, if the shutdown continues.

But the status of WIC, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program and the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations is uncertain.

The Department of Agriculture suggested that states will have to turn to local resources if necessary,

we will be maintaining key services we provide to keep people safe. That includes meat, poultry, and processed egg inspection services. :lol

Shutdown set to extend into new year after Congress punts on budget, border votes

Washington Thursday all but gave up on resolving the partial government shutdown before the New Year,

as lawmakers were told not to expect votes this week and signs of negotiations were nonexistent.

On Capitol Hill, the hallways were quiet and leadership offices were shuttered.

At the White House, President Trump retreated from public view and tweeted recriminations at Democrats.

The standoff over Trump’s demands for funding for his border wall left some 25 percent of the government without funding and

hundreds of thousands of government workers stranded at home,

facing the possibility that they will miss paychecks if the situation continues.

Trump on Thursday blamed Democratic “OBSTRUCTION of the desperately needed Wall.”

House Democrats announced in a press release that, “It’s day 6 of the Trump shutdown, and the impact of the shutdown is becoming more apparent.”

Trump tweet on Thursday claiming most furloughed workers are Democrats :lol

prompted criticism from some Democrats who argued that federal workers are not the partisans the president has made them out to be.

“This is outrageous,” Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.) said in a tweet (https://twitter.com/MarkWarner/status/1078274580043714560).

“Federal employees don’t go to work wearing red or blue jerseys.

They’re public servants.

And the President is treating them like poker chips at one of his failed casinos.”

How low will Trump go before Republicans flee?

at the onset of the shutdown that “39 percent of registered voters — including 80 percent of Republicans — approved of the president’s job performance,

while 56 percent — including 90 percent of Democrats and 57 percent of independents — did not.”

His numbers in this poll haven’t been this bad since Charlottesville. :lol

Voters not only blame Trump for the shutdown;

they also think he’ll never get his wall:

Forty-three percent of registered voters said Trump was mostly to blame for the shutdown,

compared with roughly one-third who blamed Democrats and 7 percent who chose Republicans in Congress.

Seventy-three percent of Democrats and a 41 percent plurality of independents blamed Trump for the shutdown,

while about two-thirds of Republican voters said Democrats were mostly to blame.

Sixty-four percent — including 54 percent of Republicans! — think he’s unlikely to get the wall.

Republican consultant Margaret Hoover told CNN on Thursday that President Donald Trump was losing leverage on a daily basis in his shutdown battle, and

Shutdown Leaves Government Contractors Without Work And Likely No Back Pay

While federal employees will likely get retroactively paid, many contractors will not.

Many government contractors ― from food workers and janitors to security services and computer software developers ― depend on federal funds for their wages.

Since the shutdown, some have seen their jobs furloughed (https://twitter.com/fmsinc/status/1078013830058233856) or have received “stop work orders,”

meaning they’re out of work until the government is up and running again.

government contractors in all likelihood will not (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10/17/government-contractors-shutdown_n_4117963.html).

In previous government shutdowns, federal employee salaries were suspended,

but lawmakers later proposed that they get paid retroactively (https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/these-service-members-will-work-without-paychecks-during-the-government-shutdown_us_5c23b4a7e4b0407e907f558f), even if they weren’t working.

But that hasn’t applied to government contractors in the past,

Team Trump Gleeful That Shutdown Will Hijack Pelosi’s Big Moment

The president’s aides see a debate being waged on his issues, not hers, and they couldn’t be happier.

President Donald Trump and his close allies have begun feeling more confident about the political perch they occupy.

In their eyes, a prolonged stalemate will likely fracture voters along traditional partisan lines, and

the ultimate outcome will be a debate waged largely on the president’s terms.

Increasingly, they see an upside in forcing likely incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi to have to spend the first days, if not weeks, of the next Congress

engaged in an argument over border wall funding rather than her preferred agenda:

a mix of sweeping ethics and

election reforms and

congressional oversight.

And they continue to believe that

a conversation around immigration and border security is in the president’s best political interests.

government spending data shows that the Secret Service paid Grimes Events & Party Tents Inc. of Delray Beach, Florida, $54,020 on December 19th for “TENT RENTAL FOR MAL.”

An employee of the company confirmed to Quartz that it is providing tents for the annual for-profit bash at Trump’s “Winter White House” in Palm Beach.

The Secret Service spent just over $26,000 on an array of accessories for Mar-a-Lago’s New Year’s Eve party in 2017, which was attended by both Trump and Melania.

Though

it’s never not going to be a conflict of interest when the president has taxpayers subsidize a for-profit party at his private club,

$54,000 for tents feels especially egregious given that

the government is currently running under a partial shutdown that has deprived approximately 800,000 federal workers (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/26/us/government-shutdown-stories.html) of their paychecks.

Trump selling access to the White House through his private club is an outrage every day of the week,

but when

he’s leveraging government funds for private profit

at a time when hundreds of thousands of middle-class federal employees are worried about paying their mortgages and feeding their children

Trump just got hit with a major lawsuit from his own federal workers

one of the largest unions representing government employees has taken a very litigious American approach to the situation and filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration asserting the illegality of requiring people to work without pay.

The American Federation of Government Employees union (AFGE) released a statement today announcing its lawsuit (https://www.afge.org/publication/american-federation-of-government-employees-and-kalijarvi-chuzi-newman--fitch-sue-the-government-over-shutdown/) as the shutdown has extended well into its second week.

The law firm representing the union, Kalijarvi, Chuzi, Newman & Fitch, is claiming that this practice is not within the legal authority of the government to continue.

“Approximately 420,000 federal employees are continuing to work, but don’t know when they will get their next paychecks.

This is not an acceptable way for any employer, let alone the U.S. government, to treat its employees.

Trump Rejects Democratic Funding Plan That Seeks to Reopen Government Without Wall Money

Democrats have settled on a plan.

Shortly after the party takes control of the House of Representatives

Thursday they will vote on a package of measures to reopen the federal government (https://www.ft.com/content/b810a914-0ddb-11e9-a3aa-118c761d2745).

The plan essentially involves two bills that split funding for the Department of Homeland Security and border security with the goal of ensuring that those that enjoy bipartisan support can make it through.

The New York Times explains (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/31/us/politics/government-shutdown-democrats-house.html):

The first includes six bipartisan spending measures that would fully fund agencies like the Interior Department and the Internal Revenue Service through the end of the fiscal year in September.

The second would extend homeland security funding at current levels through Feb. 8, including $1.3 billion for fencing but no funding for Mr. Trump’s border wall — a provision that renders it dead on arrival in the Republican-controlled Senate.

The move is in large part

designed to put Trump in a corner (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trumps-promise-of-a-wall-may-not-be-fulfilled-as-advertised/2018/12/30/9872c2e0-0c96-11e9-8f0c-6f878a26288a_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.602332c0f988) and

pressure him to cave or

take responsibility for keeping a large part of the federal government shut

over the president’s demand for wall money. For now, it seems the president isn’t willing to budge.

In the middle of tweetstorm that included lots of New Year vitriol, Trump also used the first day of the year to make clear that he would not support the Democratic plan to reopen the government without money for a wall along the border with Mexico.

“The Democrats, much as I suspected, have allocated no money for a new Wall. So imaginative!” Trump tweeted (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1080109395357380613). :lol

National Parks Getting Trashed During Government Shutdown

Filth spreads as overused restrooms and trash bins are locked, causing public health concerns.

Some National Parks are being

overwhelmed by trash, vandalism, human feces and destructive off-roading

while most personnel are gone during the government shutdown, according to reports from remaining workers and visitors.

“It’s so heartbreaking.

There is more trash and human waste and disregard for the rules (https://www.apnews.com/e28b313197bb46bebef0faca24b333ed)than I’ve seen in my four years living here,” Dakota Snider, 24, who works in California’s Yosemite National Park, told The Associated Press.

“It’s a free-for-all.”

Some visitors were seen dumping bags of garbage from their cars at Yosemite.

Two campgrounds and a redwood grove were

closed because of “human waste issues and lack of staffing (https://www.nps.gov/yose/index.htm),”

a park statement said.

GOVERNMENT TELLS FURLOUGHED WORKERS TO UNCLOG TOILETS FOR RENT AS TRUMP RANTS AND RAVES OVER BORDER

The fate of hundreds of thousands of federal employees rests with a president who still doesn’t understand basic facts.

with furloughed employees sharing their fears on Twitter using the hashtag #ShutdownStories.

Office of Personnel Management has tried to help, sharing a series of sample letters it suggests using (https://twitter.com/USOPM/status/1078309890832166912) as “a guide when working with your creditors during this furlough.”

Here’s an excerpt from one of them:

I am a Federal employee who has recently been furloughed due to a lack of funding of my agency.

Because of this, my income has been severely cut and I am unable to pay the entire cost of my rent, along with my other expenses...

I will keep in touch with you to keep you informed about my income status and I would like to discuss with you

the possibility of trading my services to perform maintenance (e.g. painting, carpentry work) in exchange for partial rent payments.

Here’s Nancy Pelosi’s plan to corner Trump and trap Mitch McConnell using his own legislation

Pelosi plans to introduce and pass the same funding bill that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) shepherded through the Senate by voice vote (https://www.nytimes.com/2018/12/19/us/politics/government-shutdown-threat.html)two weeks ago —

which happens to not include funding for Trump’s wall!

By passing this bill in the Senate but blocking it in the House (https://www.cnbc.com/2018/12/20/ryan-says-trump-will-not-sign-senate-passed-bill-to-avoid-government-shutdown.html) on Trump’s order,

Republicans boxed themselves in.

They cannot easily claim that their own bill they just voted for in the Senate is soft on border security.

Nor can they pin the blame on Pelosi for not retaking up the alternative House bill (https://www.npr.org/2018/12/20/678602214/senate-approves-temporary-funding-bill-house-likely-to-act-today-avoiding-shutdo)

that included Trump’s wall funding, because that bill was rejected by the Senate (https://www.vox.com/2018/12/20/18150263/house-republicans-trump-border-wall-government-shutdown).

That leaves McConnell with two choices.

He can bring the original bill to the floor for near-certain passage, after which Trump will be forced to either surrender or veto it and once again (https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/12/21/18151603/trump-shutdown-democrats-republicans) take credit for the shutdown.

Or,

he can block the bill from going to a vote at all, and share the blame with Trump for the shutdown as,

in the other chamber of the Capitol,

Pelosi and House Democrats cast themselves as the sole adults who are trying to get the government reopened and back to work.

Not really.

What it boils down to is quick, easy to understand soundbites. "Democrats voted on a spending bill to re-open the government. Republicans won't vote on it in the Senate"

Democrats voted to re-open. Republicans refuse to even vote.

Simple. Quick. Easy to magnify and define the narrative.

Senior Trump Administration Officials Set to Receive $10,000 Raises During the Shutdown

Because of a pay freeze that is set to expire during the government shutdown, Cabinet secretaries, deputy secretaries, high-ranking administrators, and Vice President Mike Pence

are all scheduled to receive raises of $10,000 or more on Saturday,

officials are worried about the appearance of granting raises to high-paid officials while lower-level federal workers struggle with finances.

Pence, for example, will see his pay bump up from more than $230,000 to about $243,000

Cabinet secretaries will go from more than $199,000 to over $210,000.

The U.S. Government Shutdown Is Screwing Up the World's Biggest Weather Conference (https://earther.gizmodo.com/the-us-government-shutdown-is-screwing-up-the-worlds-bi-1831491938)

The American Meteorological Society (AMS) will host the largest annual gathering of the world’s largest weather nerds this weekend. But a key group of constituents will be notably absent.

The shutdown over Trump’s border wall (https://splinternews.com/trump-sticks-by-his-wall-tantrum-and-shuts-down-the-gov-1831275836) means federal scientists have had to cancel their trips to this year’s confab in Phoenix, and their absence could have reverberations long after the federal government reopens for business.

the annual AMS meeting is an extremely significant week for the weather enterprise,”

“It’s where connections are made, ideas are sparked, projects initiate, and students and early career professionals have the opportunity to connect with potential employers.”

few other conferences draw together such a wide cross section of scientists and sectors. We’re talking meteorologists, climate scientists, atmospheric researchers, social scientists, satellite geeks, radar nerds, and a host of other experts from the federal, university, private, and broadcast worlds. All of those worlds are built on top of federal data and research.

. An estimated 500-700 federal employees (https://associationsnow.com/2019/01/government-shutdown-takes-toll-weather-conference/) could be forced to bail on the conference that normally attracts roughly 4,000 attendees, potentially causing the rest of the enterprise to begin to wobble.

“The AMS meeting is a critical forum for science, policy development, collaboration and professional development,”

“It’s a fact that a decent portion of today’s meteorologists and atmospheric scientists could end up working for the federal government, and it’s frustrating that federal employees can’t be with students to share their perspectives about their lines of work,”

Enough Is Enough. The Air Lines Pilots Association Writes Trump A Letter Telling Him To Get Real (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/1/5/1823903/-Enough-Is-Enough-The-Airlines-Pilots-Association-Writes-Trump-A-Letter-Telling-Him-To-Get-Real)

the president of the Air Line Pilots Association, International, representing 61,000 pilots, wrote a candid letter to his nibs, breaking down the reality of the situation.

Basically, in human terms, the safety and security of the entire airspace system is in jeopardy and its workers are unfairly being asked to put themselves in egregious financial straits, from which they may never recover.

So the pilots are asking Trump to stop the shutdown “immediately.” Here’s the letter: (http://www.alpa.org/-/media/ALPA/Files/pdfs/news-events/letters/010219-shutdown-trump.pdf)

the disruptions being caused by the shutdown are threatening the safe operations of this network.

When any of their responsibilities are placed on pause due to a shutdown there are safety, security and efficiency gaps that immediately emerge.

are fewer safety inspectors than are needed in order to ensure the air traffic control infrastructure is performing at its peak levels

oversight activities that either stop or are significantly reduced.

safety issues that put passengers and airline crews at risk.

The shutdown is a significant stumbling block in the FAA’s efforts to ensure the safety of the airspace from those drone operators who may be operating in an unsafe manner.

air traffic controllers, airspace system maintenance personnel, and the airline passenger security workforce are being asked to work unpaid.

The pressure these civil servants are facing at home should not be ignored. At some point, these dedicated federal employees will encounter personal financial damages that will take a long time from which to recover,if at all.

===

"This problem of call outs is really going to explode over the next week or two when employees miss their first paycheck," a union official at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport told CNN.

"TSA officers are telling the union they will find another way to make money. That means calling out to work other jobs."
Trump is cornered like a rat right now, whether he has the sense to realize it or not. He’s not going to get his wall,

and every day the shutdown continues, there are going to be more call outs at TSA, airports will become increasingly dysfunctional, and there will be more letters from figures in other industries affected by this folly, you can count on that.

others furloughed or forced to work without pay.

In particular, it has wreaked havoc on our national parks, with reports of overflowing human waste, uncollected trash, damage to hiking trails, and even three deaths (https://www.washingtonpost.com/energy-environment/2019/01/04/three-dead-national-parks-shutdown-wears/?utm_term=.d0ad84264223) reported as of yesterday, all due to the lack of policing and supervision. Iconic landmarks and museums on the National Mall have been shuttered or have gone unstaffed, and the American public has been denied access to them.

Yet a single rather obscure historical site (https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/feds-find-money-for-national-park-site-tied-to-trump-hotel) has somehow managed to remain open and fully staffed:

the clock tower in the federal building that houses the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.

As reported by the Associated Press (https://www.apnews.com/a92b044703354064a34217492c5a0923):

Smithsonian museums are closed.

There are no federal staffers to answer tourists’ questions at the Lincoln Memorial.

And across the United States,

national parks are cluttered with trash.

Yet despite the federal government shutdown,

a historic clock tower at the Trump International Hotel remained open Friday for its handful of visitors,

staffed by green-clad National Park Service rangers.

According to the AP, its ranger staff often outnumbers the tourists.

The Trump administration appears to have gone out of its way to keep the attraction in the federally owned building that houses the Trump hotel open

and staffed with National Park Service rangers, even as other federal agencies shut all but the most essential services.

'Fear. It's just plain, flat-outfear.' Trump's shutdown sends federal workers to food pantries (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2019/1/7/1824167/--Fear-It-s-just-plain-flat-out-fear-Trump-s-shutdown-sends-federal-workers-to-food-pantries)

“The lunches that are missed and the shopping that is missed, people are staying at home, and that really hurts our small-business community.”

One furloughed IRS employee is considering becoming a plasma donor to supplement her partner’s income during the shutdown.

A food pantry has opened to furloughed workers, and a case manager there says that what she sees is “Fear. It’s just plain, flat-out fear.”

One longtime IRS employee described going to the food pantry as “kind of embarrassing,” but with no paycheck and a disabled adult son to support, “I have to.”

“I’m really angry at the president,” she said. “How can he do this to his own people?” :lol

Welcome to Donald Trump’s America.

Yea or nay?

TRUMP DIDN’T REALIZE A GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN WOULD SHUT DOWN THE GOVERNMENT

The people in charge apparently “recognized only this week the breadth of the potential impact.”

In February 2016, Donald Trump (https://www.vanityfair.com/people/donald-trump#intcid=dt-hot-link) the candidate had no idea (https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/sep/27/this-guy-doesnt-know-anything-the-inside-story-of-trumps-shambolic-transition-team) he was required by law to put a transition team in place to initiate preparations to run the federal government.

after he had clinched the nomination, he still didn’t get that the people he’d begrudgingly allowed Chris Christie (https://www.vanityfair.com/people/chris-christie#intcid=dt-hot-link) to hire for the job had to be paid, and tried to shutter the whole operation because he thought transition workers were “stealing” his money.

In November, after he had won the election, President-Elect Slow-on-the-Uptake fired everyone who’d been manning the transition team, threw their work in the trash, and decided, per Michael Lewis, that he was going to handle things “more or less by himself,”

In the words (https://www.theguardian.com/news/2018/sep/27/this-guy-doesnt-know-anything-the-inside-story-of-trumps-shambolic-transition-team) of his own campaign chairman-turned-senior adviser,

Trump didn’t “know anything,” and worse, he didn’t “give a shit.”

And apparently, not much has changed since then, only now, he’s like, y‘know, the actual president.

two weeks after Trump shut down the government over his ridiculous border wall, the administration—only then!—“recognized . . . the breadth of the potential impact” of the president’s actions.

In other words,

the people in charge of the most powerful nation in the world evidently had no idea that the government actually does stuff,

and that when it runs out of money, that stuff ceases to function:

Food stamps for 38 million low-income Americans would face severe reductions

and

more than $140 billion in tax refunds are at risk of being frozen or delayed if the government shutdown stretches into February,

widespread disruptions that threaten to hurt the economy. . . .

The partial shutdown has cut off new funding to the Treasury Department and the USDA,

leaving them largely unstaffed and crippling both departments’ ability to fulfill core functions.

The potential cuts to food stamps and suspension of tax refunds illustrate the compounding consequences of leaving large parts of the federal government unfunded indefinitely—

a *scenario that became more likely Friday when President Trump said he would leave the government shut down for months or even years unless Democrats gave him money to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.

(https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/01/trump-didnt-realize-a-government-shutdown-would-shut-down-the-government?mbid=nl_th_5c33e99fef10e32ca1332936&CNDID=43758549&utm_source=nl&utm_medium=email&utm_brand=vf&utm_mailing=vyf_hive_news_20190108%20(1)&bxid=MzI5MjgzNzg1MjQ4S0&hasha=992d608214b505003aa04bf10a595031&hashb=542eb31d958e85ddd5a4c3ccf3faae18526a77bd&spMailingID=14917314&spUserID=MzI5MjgzNzg1MjQ4S0&spJobID=1560603104&spReportId=MTU2MDYwMzEwNAS2)That

Trump, whose mental impairment is made obvious every time he opens his mouth (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/trump-approval-rating-europe-polls-white-house-oval-office-border-wall-a8708746.html) or sends out a tweet (https://twitter.com/realDonaldTrump/status/1080088373451206656),

wouldn’t understand the impact of a government shutdown is entirely wholly unsurprising.

raw-dogs a porn star first (https://www.mercurynews.com/2018/03/26/trumps-alleged-failure-to-use-condoms-with-stormy-daniels-karen-mcdougal-raises-questions-concerns/) and evaluates the potential risks after,

Senior administration officials . . . [told The Washington Post] they were

focused now on understanding the scope of the consequences
and determining whether there is anything they can do to intervene.

, without a deal, thousands of other government functions remain

beholden to the whims of a guy who doesn’t know his ass from his elbow.

And, as he’s made abundantly clear, he couldn’t care less (https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/12/trump-shutdown-mostly-democrats) if federal employees—currently being advised to unclog toilets for rent (https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/12/government-tells-furloughed-workers-to-unclog-toilets-for-rent)—go unpaid, a point of view that presumably extends to whether or not

38 million Americans lose their food stamps,

or thousands of people get evicted because,

oops (https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/as-shutdown-drags-on-trump-officials-seek-novel-ways-to-cope-with-its-impacts/2019/01/06/96c54a50-11ee-11e9-90a8-136fa44b80ba_story.html), a Department of Housing and Urban Development program expired on January 1.

To be fair,

the administration only realized a couple days ago that

a government shutdown resulted in a shutdown of the government,

so it probably needs some time to hammer things out.

https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/01/trump-didnt-realize-a-government-shutdown-would-shut-down-the-government?mbid=nl_th_5c33e99fef10e32ca1332936&CNDID=43758549&utm_source=nl&utm_medium=email&utm_brand=vf&utm_mailing=vyf_hive_news_20190108%20(1)&bxid=MzI5MjgzNzg1MjQ4S0&hasha=992d608214b505003aa04bf10a595031&hashb=542eb31d958e85ddd5a4c3ccf3faae18526a77bd&spMailingID=14917314&spUserID=MzI5MjgzNzg1MjQ4S0&spJobID=1560603104&spReportId=MTU2MDYwMzEwNAS2 (https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/01/trump-didnt-realize-a-government-shutdown-would-shut-down-the-government?mbid=nl_th_5c33e99fef10e32ca1332936&CNDID=43758549&utm_source=nl&utm_medium=email&utm_brand=vf&utm_mailing=vyf_hive_news_20190108%20(1)&bxid=MzI5MjgzNzg1MjQ4S0&hasha=992d608214b505003aa04bf10a595031&hashb=542eb31d958e85ddd5a4c3ccf3faae18526a77bd&spMailingID=14917314&spUserID=MzI5MjgzNzg1MjQ4S0&spJobID=1560603104&spReportId=MTU2MDYwMzEwNAS2)

Defeated Trump Admits His Immigration Address Was PointlessTrump admitted to news anchors that his Oval Office speech and his trip to the border were and are a pointless waste of time.
The New York Times reported: (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/08/us/politics/donald-trump-speech.html)

Yet privately, Mr. Trump dismissed his own new strategy as pointless.

In an off-the-record lunch with television anchors hours before the address,

he made clear in blunt terms that he was not inclined to give the speech or go to Texas, but

was talked into it by advisers,

according to two people briefed on the discussion who asked not to be identified sharing details.

“It’s not going to change a damn thing, but I’m still doing it,”

Mr. Trump said of the trip to the border, according to one of the people, who was in the room.

The border trip was just a photo opportunity, he said.

“But,” he added, gesturing at his communications aides, Bill Shine, Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Kellyanne Conway,

“these people behind you say it’s worth it.”
This Explains Why Trump’s Speech Was So Terrible

Disconnected and disinterested Trump gave the speech from the Oval Office because

the president thought that the idea was a waste of time, and he was right.

The speech was a waste of time.

Trump put zero effort into it,

just as he does every single time he is forced to do something that he doesn’t want to do.

For Donald Trump, the lie has been the supposed horrible menace of undocumented immigrants invading and threatening our country, poised to terrorize our homes.

White House aide Stephen Miller reportedly has a hand in writing President Donald Trump’s Tuesday prime time address advocating for a wall on the Mexico border.

CNN contributor April Ryan, a White House correspondent, said on Monday that her Republican sources had confirmed thatMiller is writing the speech.

Miller is known for his role in crafting the president’s controversial travel ban on several majority-Muslim countries.

He is the chief architect of the administration’s “zero tolerance” policy and

the impetus behind its child-kidnapping scheme. (https://www.nbcnews.com/think/opinion/trump-s-immigration-reform-architect-stephen-miller-operates-beyond-oversight-ncna931111)
To Miller, immigrants are apparently “insurgents,”

and his cruel policies and corrosive rhetoric (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2017/08/02/stephen-miller-vs-jim-acosta-sent-the-white-house-press-briefing-completely-off-the-rails/?utm_term=.0a5e216b6301) clearly reflect that disdain,

from spearheading executive orders banning foreign nationals and refugees from Muslim countries (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/mar/15/stephen-miller-new-trump-travel-ban),

to orchestrating the ongoing family separation crisis at the border (https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/editorials/2018/06/19/stephen-miller-architect-family-separation-border-must/q7u4GAtQUdbrs1DSMgx0MI/story.html) with his zero-tolerance policy,

to his fervent support for President Trump’s efforts to end birthright citizenship (a proposal he’s been forcefully pursuing since early 2016 (https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2018/10/the-intellectual-origins-of-trumps-chilling-immigration-plan)).

As I remember it, the offer was for the DACA's to get permanent US residence but Democrats demanded it be full citizenship. That is why the deal blew up. Am I remembering it wrong?

I don't recall.

How much money for border security did Trump leave on on the table? Something like $25 billion, if I recall.

What a card sharp, raising the stakes for a much smaller pot.

Do you think it's fair for DJT to play with the lives and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands of workers this way?

i dont know the specifics of the daca part, but the white house rejected it because they also wanted to include changes to family migration and the diversity lottery in the deal

democrats basically offered border security for daca, but white house demanded border security, family migration + lottery reform for daca

Trump walks out of shutdown talks when Democrats reject funds for his border wall

A day after calling for a bipartisan compromise to resolve the partial government shutdown,

President Trump stormed out of a White House negotiating session Wednesday

when Democratic leaders refused to agree to his demand for taxpayer funds to build a southern border wall.
“Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time,” Trump tweeted afterward.

He said he asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) and Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) if they would agree to end the shutdown, now in its 19th day, in return for funds for a wall or steel barrier, one of his major campaign promises.

“Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!,” the president tweeted.

Democratic leaders accused the president of throwing a temper tantrum.

"The president slammed the table, asked Speaker Pelosi if she would support his wall and when she said no, he walked out and said,

'We have nothing to talk about,' " Schumer said.

"He didn't get his way and he just walked out of the meeting."

Pelosi said a wall will not resolve the problems currently experienced at the border

Iirc, the family migration part was to prevent the ones who broke the law (the DACA parents) from themselves getting a pass and to break the cycle/incentive of sending/bringing kids and eventually their parents.

Even though NOW the number crossing the border is reportedly lower, the difference is in WHO is crossing - the children (non-Mexicans) who change the way in which they are processed. Before, was Mexican adults. Now, accompanied by or unaccompanied minors - resulting in overwhelming facilities/judges/resources instead of deportation.

22 Rep seats are up for grabs in 2020. 800K federal workers are not getting paid. I wonder how many have high school children that are watching Mamma or Daddy and Mamma struggling to pay bills because of Trump's shutdown? Any chance their children will vote Rep when they turn 18? Peep this out:

Trump is fucking up your party Chris (https://www.spurstalk.com/forums/member.php?u=1656). Are you ready for the Senate to flip in 2020? It's gonna happen. And your boy Trump will be the reason.

I disagree. I think Trump wins easily in 2020 against whatever creature the Democrats decided to prop up (Biden,Beto,Warren) The Senate will likely remain red for quite some time.

Trump administration working on Arctic oil leases despite shutdown

the Trump administration is continuing to push for the expansion of oil drilling on sensitive, federally owned lands in Arctic Alaska.

The Alaska Bureau of Land Management (BLM), part of the Interior Department,

was scheduled to hold a meeting on Wednesday night in Wainwright, an Inupiat village on the Arctic coast,

over a plan to expand oil development in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska.

The Trump administration has pushed to move quickly on lease sales in the ANWR, which it won approval to drill in through the passage of tax legislation in 2017 after decades of prohibition.

Alaska’s crude oil production has been sagging for years. The state produced more than 2 million barrels of oil a day (bpd) in 1988,

but as of October, the most recent data available, it produced 487,000 bpd, according to the U.S. Energy Department.
