Speaking at the Global Chiefs of Mission Conference on Wednesday morning, Pence told the crowd that “Thanks to the leadership of this Commander-in-Chief,and the courage and sacrifice of our armed, forces we’re now actually able to begin to hand off the fight against ISIS in Syria.”
As the crowd cheered, Pence declared “We are bringing our troops home. The caliphate has crumbled and ISIS has been defeated!”
Hours earlier, CNN had aired footage of a suicide attack in Manbij, a U.S.-patrolled city in Syria, an attack which claimed the lives of an as-yet-undetermined number of American troops, and for which ISIS has claimed responsibility.
Pence made no mention of the attack in his speech. Thus far, the only comment from the White House has been a statement from Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders, which said that “The President has been fully briefed and we will continue to monitor the ongoing situation in Syria. For any specific questions please contact the Department of Defense.”
