That's interesting. Can't say I've watched much of Clyde, but the Payton one probably has some merit. He'd probably foul out in the 1st quarter today though :lol

Should add "poor man's" in front of Brandon Roy. Roy was a east and top 5 player when he was coming into his own.

He was a beast, loved watchin him play. Beat everyone with subtle changes of speed & direction, rather than explosive speed & athleticism.

A good comparison is D'Angelo Russell. They are both the same size and perhaps similar athleticism and length.

White was able to block Russell on a one-on-one play in this game.

Russell was the #2 pick in 2015.

Their stats this season have similar percentages but Russell has more usage.

Roy was drafted with a medical red flag because of those knee issues. He didn't come into the league medically clean.

Brandon Roy was bigger, stronger and more athletic than White.

Perhaps White gets stronger, but he won't grow taller or become more athletic than he currently is. The comparison it's there.

Was Roy a good defender? I dont remember him much. Just from watching clips though, offensively Roy is probably the closest comparison out of all the ones I've seen mentioned.

Don't sleep on White as an athlete. I didn't see anything on that Roy video that he can't do.

A shame for him, but not for the Blazers. They drafted him with medical red flags (knee), and deserved what they got.

Well now...why not Jordan then?
I love White, but let's wait before comparing him to one of the best in his generation. Even on one knee, Roy was superb.
Funny how Portland had arguably the two best players with a career ruined by structurally poor knees -Roy and Sabonis

I'm in IT, but I've been following the Spurs for 30 years, and the NBA for almost 40.

My family (parents, 6 kids) used to love to play Trivial Pursuit when I was younger. Everyone EXCEPT me has at least one advanced degree, but at some point we realized that my mom and I could beat the other six. We both are just magnets for useless information that never goes away.

Greg Oden, Bill Walton

You can say Walton, yes, but he had time to manage a great career before succumbing to bad knees, so I wouldn't put him in this category. Inhis case we know what could have been, because it had been already.
Oden was a prospect that never played a single meaninful minute of professional basketball, was ok in college which means nothing. In any case, he was light-years behind Sabonis talentwise.

Well, not quite. Manu was so unique and far better skills. However, we may see the day when Pop says, "He's Derrick White."

White is close to untouchable now. Look at the value most 3&D guys have in this league. While his defense is not quite truly elite yet it’s close and he has a much more well rounded offensive player than virtually all of them.

He isn't a 3-D guy, though..his usage during this hot stretch is around 20%, despite having to share the ball with Aldridge/Gay/DeRozan..

He's already demonstrated the skills of a lead guard, the Spurs want him to be the next Manu or TP rather than the next Danny Green..

That was kind of the point I was trying to make. He’s untouchable because his trajectory is more Manu than Danny.

I don't want to hype him too much, but how many guys in the NBA play defense AND have lead guard skills? Not just in today's NBA where it's more difficult to play D, but even going back to the 2000s..there aren't many that weren't considered stars..

yep..Payton, Kidd, Stockton,......I believe that Rubio would be on that list if he had a reasonably consistent shot (current era is where the shot is most important), Ben Simmons is so elite as playmaker and defender that even without a shot he is still a perennial star.

That’s what I was saying about LA getting AD. I truly believe SA can beat any LA offer. NO should do better than both SA/LA offers but SA youth > LA youth.

His January has really been extraordinary.

15.3 ppg
4.2 rpg
3.9 apg
1.1 spg
59.7% FG%
47.1% 3ptFG%

And all while being the best defender on the team.

An underrated aspect of DWhite is that he is one of the ugliest dudes I've ever seen in my life, I don't think the Spurs will have to worry about him chasing endorsements outside of SA because I'm not sure any company will want to stick that mug on any of their products tbh....

Derrick White will be fine. It’s not really an injury like a tare or break, it’s plantar fasciitis , a condition of the foot which he had earlier this year on the opposite foot.
He was playing really well after the first battle with plantar fasciitis and I don’t see why he couldn’t return again in a month.
Tony Paker had the same condition and had a very good season afterwards
