Back tonight for our last home game before the RRT as we host a struggling 23-29 Pels team that has lost 6 of their last 8. Anthony Davis, Nikola Mirotic, Julius Randle, & Etwan Moore are all OUT for New Orleans. Chimezie Metu has been recalled from Austin. Let’s get it.

These are the games that should be a easy win but somehow the Spurs will let the pelicans play their best game. Okafor and Frank Jackson will turn into Kobe and Shaq.

Spurs should win by 30 tbh -should.

If Metu is in, does that mean no Walker? That's sad.
This is the kind of game Walker needs. Hopefully a blowout against a team ready to quit with the AD garbage. Plus even a showcase for Walker right before the trade deadline just in case.
Give DDR more rest for his knee and give Walker the minutes, damn

He intends to play when he returns from injury(probably lying IMO) and he was on the bench last game IIRC, but I doubt they'll let him get on the court..

Cheers. Yeah, I agree, they should keep him off the court. He'd be booed at home and courted away (like Kyrie was in NY recently).

Yeah, no. This is getting really old. Gasol had a really good defensive possession to end the first quarter, and no one on here said shit about it. He had really good passes, and everyone is like "yeah, we knew he could do that". Spurs are plus-3 with him, and everyone is acting like that's normal. Then what, he misses a shot, and then it "Get him out of there."
Spurstalk is just so shitty right now. Even as I type this, Gasol just had another good defensive possession, and I'm betting nobody commented on that either.

Chinook, i know you mean well, but except for one or two games he plays awful. Whats worse ist, that because of him Poeltls minutes got cut tremendously, which visibly has shaken his confidence. Up to Gasols return, Poeltl has played very very well.
Than LMA also plays excellent, which also has cut into Poeltls Minutes.
As long as Poeltls, plays 4 minutes a game, he wont develop and that is a problem long term.
Chinook
02-02-2019, 09:21 PM
So do you think he should be playing over Poeltl?
I don't know. I would not have put Gasol back into the rotation when he was healthy. Poeltl was playing well and should have kept his spot. I don't think Pop's doing anyone favors by playing all three guys. At the same time, Gasol IS better than Poeltl. If Pop were to give him time to settle into the spot rather than doing this time-share thing, I think he'll be good. Or they can go back to Poe. Just don't do both.

I have nothing against the idea that Poeltl should not have been benched. I do think folks are way too quick to excuse Jakob's bad play and ignore Pau's good play. Like everyone seems to think it's fine that Poeltl isn't playing well in a part-time role, but they don't think Gasol would also play better in more minutes. Both are professionals now. Both should be ready at all times. And both might need to be in a rhythm. I can get that. I feel, though, that ST's agendas makes it to where that type of objectivity just doesn't apply most of the time.

the thing with Gasol is he can't score at all. Then when he misses the bucket he's also slow running the floor that it's a straight lay up line if the other team pushes the pace. And if he's under the basket they just get a switch with a guard on him who makes a jumper/floater. Poeltl fits the playing style of the bench way better cause he's more mobile, runs the floor hard, is a better offensive rebounder and is a roll man. Gasol is still a pick and pop big

If both teams score, then neither team went on a run. Anyways, the Spurs gave up 11 points in the five minutes Gasol played. That's a pace of 105.6 a game, less than the 110.1 points the team gives up every game.

It just goes to show how skewed your basketball world-view is. You claim to be all new-age and stat-driven, but when it comes time to actually talk about the numbers and how they apply, you give a paper-thin analysis. You complain about people using "traditional position markers" then whine that Bertans isn't playing the three rather than the four. It just doesn't make sense. If both teams score, then neither team went on a run. Anyways, the Spurs gave up 11 points in the five minutes Gasol played. That's a pace of 105.6 a game, less than the 110.1 points the team gives up every game.

I know you live by the motto "men lie, women lie, numbers don't" although they actually do sometimes
I don't live by that motto, actually. I believe numbers need context and explanations before we can try to apply them to anything. If you can give me real reasons why the numbers are wrong, that's one thing. But if you're just going to be like "They're wrong because I disagree with them," that's not a real critique. That stretch tonight is a perfect example how Gasol can come in and play well, and fans on here still think he's fucking up. I see Pau play, and I can see why his numbers make sense. I also see how he doesn't work in situations. It's not like I'm a fan of how Pop is using him or Poeltl right now either. But I don't have to pretend his numbers are lying to think that.
Like the reason why I think Pau's on/offs are worse is because he played 158 of his 291 minutes before Pop got his defensive gameplan installed, and that's a way higher percentage than any other guy on the roster. Pau himself was actually a fine defender for what he can do. But the team was missing rotations and not trying very hard back then. They fixed that starting in December, and everyone got the plus-minus bump from that except Gasol. Now he's back, and his numbers are consistent in that regard, but he still has to deal with more than half his minutes being during the worst defensive stretch in recent Spurs memory.

Your "Whole season worth of sample size" has Gasol as a way better defensive player than Poeltl, but you'll cling to the one stat that puts Jakob ahead in that category. You claim to be all new-age and stat-driven, but when it comes time to actually talk about the numbers and how they apply, you give a paper-thin analysis.
When it comes to defense, advanced stats aren't as reliable as offensive stats or impact stats in general. Also, I love how when I said Bertans was a positive on defense you showed his defensive on/off stat 5 games into the season saying that's better than DBPM. But now that that stat doesn't fit your agenda you did a 180 on that. :lol
You complain about people using "traditional position markers" then whine that Bertans isn't playing the three rather than the four. It just doesn't make sense. It's like you don't think about what you type at all.

But now that that stat doesn't fit your agenda you did a 180 on that. :lol
Oh, no. On/offs are still my favorite of all the defensive stats. I like them more than RPM and BPM. But as I've mentioned, there's a really obvious reason why Gasol's on/offs were worse than Poeltl. Unlike you, I don't think just listing a number constitutes an argument. The other stats don't have the same blind spot to Gasol's injury that on/offs do.
I already explained the SF/PF thing and it was pretty clear. You are just salty because you realized you had an awful take for which you are getting rightfully gang banged so you are just trying to divert from that fact. :lol
The take wasn't bad at all. You tried to compare DeRozan's rebounding to Bertans' by using rebounding rate, and that's wrong. It's not how the stat is supposed to be used. I explained that, and you decided to change the subject.
BTW, you still didn't answer who played SF the other night, Gay or Bertans.
No I didn't. I haven't even gone back to that thread, because I've been working massive overtime all week. This is my only night off until next Saturday, and I didn't really do much posting besides a couple of messages from my phone since last weekend. I didn't watch either game this week, so I honestly don't know who played where. I do think in general he spends most of his defensive possessions as a big and is usually closer to the rim than DeRozan is. Regardless, Rudy's rebounding rate is a lot higher than Bertans' is.

But the Spurs playing bad offense and not using any time while also leaving guys open wasn't excusable. This was garbage time, but the guys who came in played unrealistically bad. Pop stick with them because, how can you really expect them to lose a 20-point lead so fast?
If Gasol were in the game instead of Jakob, he'd be getting killed rather than Pop. It's sad how predictable the channels are on this site.
Gasol was fine tonight and I can understand why he's the back-up instead of Poeltl (who looks like shit right now). However, the Spurs not milking clock and taking bad shots while not defending the 3-pt line is something the Pop of old would call timeouts for even if the team were up 30.

Forbes was garbage without the starters tbh. And Pop should have called time when the lead was cut to 8. This probably shook the players’ confidence than taught especially getting pulled out not doing an NBA job. Bad coaching on the last 5 mins tbh.

Really not looking forward to the RRT unless they make a trade.
