Figured I'd toss this in the Spurs forum since most of the SA natives hang out here. For those that don't know SA has an AAF team and the season starts this weekend. The first two games are at the Alamodome. Anyone going to check it out? Tickets are pretty cheap tbh.

https://aaf.com/san-antonio-commanders/schedule

https://aaf.com/san-antonio-commanders/roster

There's a few names I recognize on the roster it's basically a bunch of cast offs. As far as the games go, they've shortened the play clock to pick up the pace and there are no kickoffs. They apparently have cut out commercial time outs to speed the game up. We'll see. I'll likely give a go for a few weeks to see if it's better than fucking terrible(probably not:lol).

Haha some Cowboys fans on the Cowboys site I post on used to be so big on the prospect of Dustin Vaughn (kind of like everyone is now with Mike White :rollin). Looks like there's some other Cowboys/NFL castoffs on the roster I recognize a couple of TAMU names, Trey Williams was a good college running back, wanna say Cameron Clear made it on someone's practice squad or played in the NFL at some point.

Actually a surprising amount of fringe NFL talent (at some point) on the squad.

Right but Austin seems to be trending that way. Something happened over the last 5 or 10 years where Austin turned the corner and stole SAs shine. Sad but true. The US hates SA but has embraced Austin and everyone knows it. Lots of things wrong with SA.

The US hates SA but has embraced Austin and everyone knows it. Lots of things wrong with SA.Meh. SA was always a backwater pro sports owners could cite as a potential landing spot to get better deals from other cities. Of course Austin is the shiny new market with tons of money, but the people here tired of handouts a couple years back. They didn't care about Amazon HQ2 and got a shit ton of concessions out of the MLS owner before letting him start a team in his second choice for a stadium site.

Austin might be able to support the Spurs at some point in the future if they move and an arena gets built in the right place. MLB or NFL? No way Austin gives those owners what they're used to. Anything like that would end up being a regional team located north or south of Austin proper.

I see no reason for Austin to get a team. I like that SA is close enough to where I can drive down and see a game if I want to but still far enough away to where I don't have to deal with gameday traffic or associated taxes.

I was flipping between this game and the Clipper game and I have to say, it wasn't bad football at all. It looked like the refs were actually letting them play on defense, unlike the pussified NFL. Also, mic'ing up everyone, even the replay booth in real time, is a nice touch.

The presentation goes a long way. Usually you can point to something that screams out small-time with these kind of start-up leagues but everything about the game Saturday was top notch, imo. The fact that it was on CBS, the announcers, the pre-game and half-time shows, the camera work, the individuals backing the league, etc all were solid. I hope the league makes it, tbh.

I dont get why SA loves to big time what we do have instead of helping to build it up. Maybe if that was the case we could have prominent teams to call our own instead of t-shirting Austin's college team or Dallas' pro team.

Look at UCF. Large public university, in a large metro area, in a state full of talented recruits, with blue blood programs in their state, just moved up to FBS in the mid 90s, now a perennial Top 15 team and next in line to get into a Power 5 conference. Why can't that be UTSA?

For the Commanders, this shouldn't just be an NFL audition for the players. It should be one for the city as well. Look at how many cities have gotten the call up to MLS because of their strong fan support in the USL. Different leagues I know, but still it couldn't hurt for the NFL to look at us and be like "damn look how great those beaners are at supporting their AAF team".

Watched the game and was actually surprisingly entertained. Only time will tell if the league lasts, but it’s got a better chance than the others that have come before it imo. Wouldn’t be surprised if The AAF and the XFL merged together at some point down the line, or if the NFL bought it outright and used it as a developmental league for players (basically what it is now, only better). I’ll be keeping an eye on some games this season for sure.

Also, Johnny Manziel on the Commanders almost makes too much sense not to happen tbh. Grew up in Kerrville and went to college just a couple hours up the road from SA. He alone would sell tickets and bring notoriety to the league. And would give him the opportunity to prove he deserves a 2nd shot at the NFL. He’s under contract for the CFL for one more season but then he’s a FA. Make it happen Moose!

I do think this league has a chance to survive simply because the NFL is behind it (like the NBA and the G League) rather than trying to kill it (like they do most renegade leagues).

However . . .

Have you seen their other QB’s play? I’d take Nathan Peterman over the shit they’re trotting out there right now.

QBs not even at a major college level . . .

FkLA

And cutting Dalton Sturm was stupid af. He can't be any worse than what they're trotting out there and you also get the UTSA fanbase. That UNC QB they used their 1st pick on seems like a prototypical monkeyballer that can't throw worth a shit. Horrible pick. I feel like Sturm would've gotten a shot to see what he could do by now if they had just kept him as their back-up/3rd QB.

edit: Looks like Vaughan (is that guy injured?) not Williams was their first pick. Either way there's absolutely no reason why that monkeyballer should've been kept as the 3rd QB over the great Dalton Sturm.

A relegation/promotion, soccer-style system would be ideal. All the storied, consistent franchises would remain in the NFL and the perennial bottom dwellers that don't bring anything to the NFL either have an incentive to get their shit together or they get relegated to give promising up and comers like SA/ORL a shot.
