View Full Version : Spurs and Pau agree to buyout!

So with this years so far and the buyout, what does Pau's total extortion from the Spurs come out to be?
(BTW he was paid 7 mil a year both years on Chicago Bulls.
Popped raised him double.)
Thanks for that tidbit. I didn't know/had forgotten. Fans the flames of my disdain for Pau even higher.

Being player-friendly doesn't mean you do your rivals favors.
The Spurs don't don't ever help the Lakers, they only put their players in position to do what they want.

If he signs a long term deal elsewhere, can the spurs still “off set” some portion the balance of the 3.5m they’re on the hook for next year?

PATFO stays making power moves. He will be off the books in 2020 when they can go after big free agents :lmao
Spurs would've had more cap space if they just kept Gasol and stretched the 6.7 million over 3 years, but Pau wanted to play so they did him that favour
Hopefully his Bucks salary will count against what we owe him next year, assuming he plays of course.
yeah those 527K he's getting paid by Milwaukee should give us some more cap space to sign a G-League player

Don’t understand Why people are complaining about this deal. There is no reason why gasol should give the spurs some money back and he gave us 2.5 million : not a lot but better than nothing.
The only thing the spurs could have done, was stretching Pau guaranteed money but even if they do that they wOn’t have enough money under the cap next year.
The moove is good for the team.

Spurs aren't going to operate as a below the cap team; it makes sense for them to stay over, re-sign Gay, use both picks (19th and 29th currently) and possibly use the full MLE of $9 million. Gasol giving back $1.5 million next season could be the difference between paying the tax and staying under, depending on how much the Spurs give Gay.
I think he had to give back money this season, in order for the buyout to occur. Spurs should have held out for more savings from his guarantee but paying out $5.1 is better than $6.7 and is almost certainly means they aren't going to stretch his remaining money because they shouldn't be in the tax.

If Gasol didn't want to keep getting DNPs and get brought out, then he did have to give money back tbh. Streching Gasol is a bad idea, they could eat his $5.1 million, add both picks to the roster, bring back Gay and use the full MLE and stay underneath the luxury tax line of $132 million.
Even if they stretch Pau salary they will not have enough To do something, it’s Better To go over the cap with gay cap hold and have the MLE next year.
Agreed. $ 9 million is a lot for a playoff team to have to play with, every other playoff team in the west will only have access to the taxpayer mid-level besides Utah and LAC. Spurs could get a useful player for the full MLE.

He did.But it was almost a decade ago.
He should know the limitations of his own body.
If he could actually help a team, not in something so extreme as a championship, but even improve their playoff odds,or fill a hole in someone rotations, the Spurs would have found a trade for him 2 hours after he requested to be traded.
Pop wouldn't have to call Bud and say "Mike can you please tell Pau you'll sign him if he agrees to a buy out? He's starting to piss me the fuck off"
Even if they stretch Pau salary they will not have enough To do something, it’s Better To go over the cap with gay cap hold and have the MLE next year.
This precisely. Spurs will wait one more offseason for cap space. Had Gasol given all of it back (why would he ever), they wouldn’t have had enough to sign anyone of consequence with that ~$10 million in space. Better to keep Gay using the early bird rights + sign someone to the MLE.
The only reason to stretch is if you have big plans in FA. But they don’t, and stretching him wouldn’t give opportunities either. So why sacrifice cap space for the two years after?

Is that offset by salary paid by another team should he resign elsewhere next year? He had a contract for 16+ million next year I believe, with 6.7 guaranteed. The salary he is receiving is less a couple million he gave back. They would have had to pay him more if a deal wasn't cut is the way I see it. They weren't paying him anything beyond guaranteed money either way. Now they pay 5 instead of 7.

With 4 secs on the clock,Pau inbounds to Brogdon,he brings it down the court at full speed and at 2 secs remaining Brogdon is double teamed and throws the ball towards the 3 where Pau should be trailing.

Pau wasn't helping the Spurs and his contract is a mistake from Spurs front office. I'm happy he's not in the team but there is no reason to disrespect him.
Anyway, I'm coming here just to say it's been confirmed that the remaining of Pau's contract will have a direct impact in the 2019-20 cap and won't be stretched. Now, confirmed Gasol is on the books for around $5M and if the Spurs don't bring back Pondexter and Cunningham and replace them signing its 2 first round picks, there are two scenarios:
A) Keep Gay's $13.1 million cap hold to re-sign him. The Spurs would be over the cap but not in the tax yet so they'd have access to an estimated $9.2M MLE to sign one player to complete the roster
B) Rudy leaves. The Spurs would be $5.9M under the cap. They'd have to fill two roster spots with those $5.9M and the room exception projected to be around $4.7M
So I'd say the buyout was a good operation at the end. Remember Murray will be back and Walker and Metu should start being useful at least for a few minutes coming from the bench (don't expect them to have a sudden impact like the 24years old D.White).

The Bucks, the team with the best record in the league (i dunno for how much longer) are 2-3 since they signed Gasol.
The brilliant part is that they had an up and coming PF/small ball C in a kid named Wilson who was really helping earlier in the year with good defense and 3's.
Now his minutes are going to Gasol...

Im amazed at how we are winning any games after getting rid of our best defensive player. I mean advanced stats don't lie, Pau was our best defensive player last year on a team with the #1 defense. He wasn't aided at all by Murray, Green, Slomo, and LMA last year and even though he broke his foot this year, advance stats don't lie- he was still a great defender this year. I don't see how anyone could say he was a negative defensive player tbh

I'm thinking Aldridge, DeRozan, White, MURRAY, Gay, Poetl, Bertans, Mills + a defensive forward will be the 9 men core rotation for the next season. Behind them, Belinelli, Forbes and Walker should complete the rotation depending on how they're playing, team needs, injuries, rest, etc. Metu should fill Pondexter spot at the end of the bench and just play residual minutes unless he earns more.
I'm assuming our rookies will spend their season in Austin.

Depends if Spurs draft an older rookie or a young one. And Spurs will use a full MLE on a rotational player. It's worth 9mil, so they should get something good. Like Marcus Morris, Bojan Bogdanovic, Terrence Ross, Al-Farouq Aminu, Rodney Hood.

Another DNP for Gasol. DJ Wilson's really good. No idea what Bud was thinking but it seems he's realizing his mistake very quickly.

+1. You only show highlights for players that actually played significantly here. Why should spurs fans celebrate Pau Gasol’s time as a Laker when they were rivals at the time? There were only like 2 seconds of actual Spurs highlights in there. Between this and the 3 year contract the front office gave him, it’s mind boggling how much respect PATFO showed for washed up Pau.

Pau helping deliver a championship to Milwaukee by rightfully sitting on the bench. I was so glad when this pos got waived and I hope it hurts his ego sitting there.

Bud must have been thinking Pau was really nothing more than injury insurance. He would have been that for us if he had kept his mouth shut. Fortunately he spoke up. He was expensive injury insurance for us, cheap injury insurance for Milwaukee.

That was great point. The funniest was I think the 3rd clip showing Pop called for a pick to get Demar on Pau.

I wonder why, I never understand, why this sob get big contract and big money, Did he sleep with RC Buford and suck eachothers virgina?
first he ruined PATFO's reputation, then he hurt Bud's fame, why? because he used to be Koby's bitach?
and just like nephew, they already left, but spurstalk still talk about them like they never left. :blah

Good bump. Turning point in the season, TBH. I don't care if Pau got paid, I am so glad to have his corpse out of here.
:lol Honestly, this is getting overblown. He was barely even playing. Spurs are elite at home+really good when White is healthy and suck on the road+really bad when White is out. He really had nothing to do with the shitty RRT or this strong homestand, tbh.

He got in the way of Jakob’s minutes. Him being gone finally got Jakob to play a good stretch of basketball. The front office shouldn’t have had to pay 16 million for a third string big

The home vs away performance is a valid argument.
But if you've ever played even one year of competitive basketball (or sports in general) you do know how much of a psychological burden it is for a team to have a player complaining about playing time in it's roster.
Team loses confidence, young players feel threatened, coaching staff is put in a corner and the team ultimately malfunctions in multiple levels.

Poeltl has been a good addition, you have to admit that much. I don't think that happens with Pau here. It seems like Pop felt like he had to give Pau the minutes - out of respect or something? The first Game Pau was gone was the first game Poeltl started. (I don't remember if the buyout was final or not, but Pau was a DNP.) It's been a pretty monumental shift, even counting the fact that White came back.

Pop was giving Pau token minutes to see if someone would bite into a trade. Even those few minutes fucked with the entire chemistry of the team, imho.

I don't care if he wasn't playing. Just looking over at that Spanish fuck on the bench must have been a downer for all the guys tbh.

We can all agree that he was overpaid but that's not really relevant to on the court stuff. Regarding Poetl, Gasol had already been phased out before he got bought out. This wasn't an Enrique type of situation, where he was still getting big minutes despite being done. Gasol was pretty insignificant by the end and to use his departure as a reason (even a small one) for why the team is playing so well discredits the team and guys like White, tbh.

exactly right. Plus it was Pop's courtesy to a HOFer. Very glad he is gone.

It was definitely addition by subtraction with Pau... Poeltl is averaging 25 mpg in March and 23 mpg post ASG. His season average is 16 mpg. Eight or nine more minutes of mobility per game is huge.

Pau out for a month I read on BR with “ankle injury “

Milwaukee Bucks center Pau Gasol will miss the rest of the regular season with an injured left ankle, ESPN reported Saturday.
Gasol is expected to miss about a month. That timetable would allow him to return at some of the point in the postseason, depending how far the NBA-best Bucks (54-19) advance.
Gasol joined Milwaukee less than three weeks ago after reaching a buyout with the San Antonio Spurs. He has played in just three games for the Bucks, averaging 1.3 points and 3.3 rebounds.
In 30 overall games this season, Gasol is averaging career lows of 3.9 points and 4.6 rebounds.
Gasol's injury comes after the Bucks recently lost guard Malcolm Brogdon (foot) and forward Nikola Mirotic (fractured thumb).
The 38-year-old Gasol is a six-time All-Star.

May explain the extreme drop in his production.
Kind of strange, though...pictures floated out just a few days ago of him putting up shots. Wonder if this was planned or if he had another setback.
