NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Although both marijuana and tobacco smoke are packed with cancer-causing chemicals, other qualities of marijuana seem to keep it from promoting lung cancer, according to a new report.

The difference rests in the often opposing actions of the nicotine in tobacco and the active ingredient, THC, in marijuana, says Dr. Robert Melamede of the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs.

He reviewed the scientific evidence supporting this contention in a recent issue of Harm Reduction Journal.

Whereas nicotine has several effects that promote lung and other types of cancer, THC acts in ways that counter the cancer-causing chemicals in marijuana smoke, Melamede explained in an interview with Reuters Health.

"THC turns down the carcinogenic potential," he said.

A long time ago, it was touted that a single "joint" was as damaging to your lungs as a pack of cigarettes. I was skeptical way back then, now I call "bullshit".

If that were true, we'd be having tons of lung cancer instances in pot-only smokers. Never materialize did it?

That's because like so many assertions by "medical science" (as good an oxymoron as any), it sounds good, may make just a boatload of common sense, but it is plain wrong.

So, don't worry about eating eggs they will not give you a coronary and neither will coffee. And smoking pot is probably not that good for you, but it seems pretty unlikely that it is some big cancer risk as it has been portrayed by the ant-drug types.

They should target stuff such as crystal meth, heroine, and cocaine, and leave the weed smokers alone.
