The Spurs lost three All NBA defenders and still make the playoffs (well, almost certainly)

The Lakers add the second best player of all time and still won’t crack .500

Agree with the sentiment, but LeBron is not the second best player of all time. Top ten probably.

Heck, there's a chance the Lakers add Lebron and end up with a worse record than last year.

That's cause ESPN's BPI model is terrible.

538 has Warriors at 56% and Bucks at 17%.

THIS.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar either greatest or 2nd best. Look at his overall body of work. Winner x 6, 6 MVPs, dominant HS through pro, most unstoppable shot, most points....

I should have clarified. The guy who thinks he’s the second best player of all time. His longevity certainly helps his case. But anointing him discounts the peaks of a bunch of players, and for some reason big men don’t get included in the argument (Kareem, Wilt, Duncan, Shaq, Hakeem, etc.).

And with the first selection of this years draft, the Lakers select Zion Williamson, Duke.

Bill who is #1 on your list? I know most people go Jordan, some LeBron. I have always been a Kareem guy and find it insulting people magically elevate LeBron past him, like he isn't worth mentioning.

Kareem seems to get lost in the mix with all the great centers, along with Wilt, Shaq, Hakeem, Russell, and Duncan.

Jordan and LeBron definitely get more attention because they are SFs and have a flashier playing style, but there's cases to be made for any of these guys.

Mine would really be close between Jordan and Kareem. They are definitely 1-2 in my boat in some order. And Russell should always be in the conversation. I think Russell and Duncan are similar in a lot of ways actually. All about winning, respected by their generation, but will kind of be forgotten by later generations who know only highlights or gaudy stats. Like, how Kobe somehow is floating into GOAT conversations when I'd put at least 2 of his contemporaries (TD and Shaq) ahead of him.

Absolutely agree. Your "after career" marketing is huge. Moses was awesome for example, but for whatever reason, people don't remember him even though he's a Top 5 center.

You are going to wish you had the 12th pick instead of the 21st pick and have been long gone from the playoffs.

spurs1990

I know most Tankers are tongue in cheek or playing devil's advocate, but look at the 2017 draft.
https://www.basketball-reference.com/draft/NBA_2017.html

Who would you pick hands down over Derrick White knowing everything you know now?

My list would be:
Tatum #3
D Mitchell #13
Anunoby #23
Kuzma #27

So four players, and the Spurs FO found White at #29.

So it's an indication of 1) complete crapshoot nature of the draft with these 1&done'rs, and 2) the high aptitude of the Spurs' player development.

If Murray returns to form you'll be looking at a potential long term backcourt both picked at #29.

The only counter argument is the Spurs could turn a 12th pick into a franchise guy. But those odds are pretty long, despite what they did with Leonard.

You are going to wish you had the 12th pick instead of the 21st pick and have been long gone from the playoffs.

Not really...

Draft 2016: #19 Malik Beasley, #20 LeVert, #27 Siakam, #36 Brogdon
Draft 2017: #19 John Collins, #22 Jarrett Allen, #27 Kuzma, #30 Josh hart, #51 Monte Morris
Draft 2018: #19 Huerter, #26 Shamet, # 33 Brunson, #40 Kuruks

Same drafts, # 12: T.Prince, Luke Kennard, Miles Bridges.
Spurs: Murray, White, Walker

I take playoffs and #21
