I'm a wrestling expert and will tell you it's not a sport.

Watch this...

So you are a wrestling expert, so this should be so easy.

1. When the WWWF first came into existence they had a tournament to crown the new Champion, who fought in the final and where was it held? (actually it never happened, that was just the story) All true wrestling guru's know this story.

2. Give me four wrestlers who went with "Nature Boy"

3. What wrestling family has had six members in the biz?

4. The first masked wrestler allowed to compete in New York state?

5. What wrestler had at least four different wrestling characters?

Prediction......ignored or some reason those questions weren't answered.

Pro wrestling is called a sport all over the place. Do I really need that list proving this?

Anything that takes trained athletes to compete is a sport. There athletes are far better athletes than skinny Kenya distance runners. Most all those in the biz were college wrestlers, footballers, tossed weights around, competed in track.

Real wrestlers.

Cowboy Dick Hutton
Verne Gagne
Danny Hodge
Kurt Angle
Brock Lesnar
Dolpf Ziggler
Chris Taylor
The Iron Sheik

TONS...of footballers.

Weight lifting

Bill Kazmeir
Mark Henry
Paul Anderson
Ken Patera

Bobybuilding

Tony "Mr, USA" Atlas
Earl "Mr. Universe" Maynard
Ray "Thunder" Stern
Samson Burke

Sport: An activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Golf is a sport. What if you just play by yourself never competing vs anyone?

Bobybuilding is a sport. What if you don't compete in competitions?

All these wrestlers are competing for the big money, their performance in the ring is huge. That is very real. Being it takes trained athletes putting their physical well being on the line five nights a week or more, yep.....sport.

Right out of the....SPORTS...pages.

The competition is in being the best in the biz and moving up the ranks.

There are little companies out there that pay little, everyone in these...Indies...want a WWE contract, that is the goal and they are all competing to get there.

that competition you speak of isn't in the context of winning/losing their bouts though.

thats all behind the scenes stuff, like an actor auditioning.

the wrestling match itself is not a competition to win or lose.

You can;t compete vs yourself like in golf, bodybuilding, bowling?

Any physical activity that takes the athleticabilty found in pro wrestling is a sport.

We already call it a sport right here.

To answer this question accurately we must look at the definition of the word "sport." This from dictionary.com:

noun
an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.
a particular form of this, especially in the out of doors.
SEE MORE
adjective Also sports.
of, relating to, or used in sports or a particular sport:
sport fishing.
suitable for outdoor or informal wear:
sport clothes.
verb (used without object)
to amuse oneself with some pleasant pastime or recreation.
to play, frolic, or gambol, as a child or an animal.

Using the above we can conclude that professional wrestling is indeed a "sport" just by mere definition. Looking at it more in depth we find that past the collegiate level "professional wrestling" has it's winners pre-determined theoretically eliminating the competition aspect of what is considered traditional sport. We know that the professional wrestler is athletic, tough, and durable. All the qualities you would want in an athlete participating in any kind of "sport." We know that there is competition behind the scenes to "get over" with the fans and also politically within the respective companies. We see real competition as far as TV time and title belts are concerned. Using the above information we can conclude that professional wrestling is indeed a sport and can also be considered entertainment. : )

"professional wrestling" is not competitive. the wrestling listed in the definition refers to olympic style wrestling, where there actually is a competition

circus acrobatics involve plenty of athleticism. it's athletic activity. that doesn't make it a sport.

What are non competitive sports?

For example playing catch (football, baseball, frisbee...) is usually recreational. It can turn competitive in an instant though. Cycling, skateboarding, skating, walking, dancing, surfing, Aerobics, hiking, boating, martial arts and more all can be recreational. ... "Non-competitive sports".

Non-Competitive Sports to Consider

Canoeing.
Kayaking.
Archery.
Aerobics.
Recreational Dance.
Hiking.
Backpacking.
Fishing.

We will find pro wrestling in....

sports pages
sport magazines
sports TV stations
on most lists of most popular sports

There is no doubt it's a sport.

This from a list of the worlds most popular sports

7 | Wrestling

Yes! Yes! Yes! I’d like to think this isn’t just counting Greco-Roman wrestling but also the professional ranks. The WWE is spectacular at creating their own metrics to make pro wrestling seem like the most popular entity on the planet (e.g. “Monday Night Raw is the highest-rated weekly episodic sports-oriented TV program in basic cable history adjusted for inflation!”)

You don't have to even compete at all to be involved in a sport. And, you can compete vs yourself in some sport.

Being pro wrestling is found everywhere sports is talked about, it takes well trained athletes all competing for the big $$$$$$, yep, sport.

Why Do People Love Pro Wrestling?

It’s Fake

This is every wrestling fan’s least favorite expression. Whether you think Roman Reigns is the best wrestler in the world or that Tetsuya Naito is underrated, all wrestling fans hate being told that the sport they love is fake. Trying to argue that pro wrestling isn’t fake is often a fruitless task because in a way, you’re both right. On one hand, pro wrestling is entertainment. The results of the matches are almost always determined before the opening bell, and often, each move has been choreographed beforehand. Finn Balor isn’t really a demon, the Undertaker isn’t dead, and Bray Wyatt doesn’t have a sibling named Abigail.

But that’s just the thing. All wrestling fans know that. Most wrestling fans have known that for decades. Wrestling fans watch wrestling the same way the rest of the world watches Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead. Except, when we watch our favorite shows, we’re watching amazing athletes pull off death defying stunts, live, in one take. Imagine if Norman Reedus had to film an entire episode of The Walking Dead, shooting extras with arrows without killing them, and improvising dialogue, and running around Atlanta, all in one take. You know damn well he couldn’t do it. He’d stumble over his dialogue, he’d get tired, or, ya know, he’d kill someone.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are TONS of Pro Wrestling Forums out there, the sport has tons of fans and nobody cares that it is fake no more than movie fans care that it's all fake.
When you understand the sport it is very interesting, the history as interesting as it gets. So many colorful performers has been in the biz, so many incredible moments and this is coming from a huge/knowledgeable football fan. Those who don't get it, you are really missing out.
Hell, you guys don't even know Dwight Clark was a TE, so your opinion means.....0.
Why wrestling is a sport?
Wrestling is a combat sport involving grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds.***** The sport can either be theatrical for entertainment (see professional wrestling), or genuinely competitive.**********
Linda McMahon On Pro Wrestling Not Being A Sport, WWE Lessons Helping With Her New Job, More
By Marc Middleton (https://www.wrestlinginc.com/pages/contact-us.shtml) | October 26, 2017
Former WWE (https://www.wrestlinginc.com/news/wwe-news) CEO Linda McMahon, who now serves as the administrator of the Small Business Administration under President Donald Trump, recently spoke with Tom Fox for The Washington Post. You can see the full interview at this link (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/on-leadership/wp/2017/10/24/linda-mcmahon-how-lessons-from-a-wrestling-empire-can-help-the-nations-small-businesses) and below are highlights:
What lessons did you learn in business that prepared you to be the SBA administrator?
When WWE started, it was primarily the live event business and we expanded it to licensing, to music to publishing to pay-per view and to networks. I created and grew a business. I understand what businesses go through, the ups and downs, the good cycles and the bad cycles. I learned about strict cash management, the impact of regulations and the need for providing health-care insurance to employees. I have walked the walk and talked the talk of our small business communities, so I can really be a strong advocate on their behalf.
What would people be surprised to know about you?
I am the most comfortable in my sweats hanging out with my family and I am a jock. I was a real tomboy growing up. I played baseball with boys. I was singled out as the best athlete in school for the 8th grade, so I thought that was pretty cool.
What is your favorite sport? Is it professional wrestling?
Well, professional wrestling is an entertainment product. For pure sport as a spectator, I like the pace of basketball.
Well actually she doesn't know more about pro wrestling than I do. I can talk...
WWA
AWA
CWA
NWA
World Class
WCW
WWWF
I got into the wrestling around 1959 and can talk wrestlers she or Vince have never even heard of.
Totally have the history down, can hang with anyone in the world about the who, what, where and when of pro Wrestling.
There is no doubt at all that pro wrestling is a sport.
Pro Wrestling is without question a sport.
That's why we find it in....
SI
ESPN
Anywhere sports is talked
Here in the General Sports
Newspapers
As one of the most popular SPORTS in the world
Trained athletes (all x footballers, bobybuilders, track guys, weighr lifters, gymnasts) all competing in a physical activity that is very dangerous, all competing to be the best. Yep....sport....and any place that doesn't even know what position Dwight Clark played.....ha~~~~~~~~~
The competition is in being the best in the biz and moving up the ranks.
There are little companies out there that pay little, everyone in these...Indies...want a WWE contract, that is the goal and they are all competing to get there.
The rasslin' really was my first love when it came to sports, the track, football came later once I started to compete. I go back to the very beginnings and can talk the sport from an historian perspective. Jim Londos, Ed "Strangler" Lewis, Farmer Burns, etc. Talk about something interesting there it is.
The politics involved, what a story. The drugs, the freaks, life on the road, the real feuds, the raising real hell, the colorful characters in this strange biz, what a story.
I think the first wrestler I ever saw on TV was this guy.....
Baron Leoni
I get it's real important I am NEVER right and MUST be wrong 100% of the time but that makes you people look dumb. All of you know Clark was a WR, and if I'd said....Pro Wrestling is not a sport.......that poll would read
Sport...14
Non sport...1
Why fight it like ya do, hell, I'd learn all I could.
I can't understand people paying to go and see that. As ridiculous as it all is, surely, that would have to be the point where you'd question what you're doing with your time and money.
I see it as a live action movie tbh. Shit I know they don't really hit or kill actors in action movies but I still like them. When the crowd is into it and you have 19,000 screaming fans then it becomes fun tbh. Wrestlers come out and shit talk you and ur city and you boo them and shit talk them right back. Everyone has their own favorite character that you cheer for. It's scripted and the winner is already predetermined but hell let me ruin the ending of the new avengers movie, Thanos loses. Everyone knows it, but it's still gonna make a billion dollars in the box office.
Everybody does this social media thing, there is noway anyone could ignore the talk (if into the sport) which is just a show.
but for my own enjoyment? yeah i dont get it either.
It's basically a live action comic book, sans the CGI. I don't see much fundamental difference between superhero movies and pro wrestling. They tick the same dramatic boxes.
