And the more left leaning whites ...

But I think even right wing conservatives enjoyed his comeback story

A lot of them viewed Tiger as an Uncle Tom so he wasn't a threatening figure for them. If anything I think a lot of them missed the attention he brought golf during his prime.

Yawn. One major in 11 years with all those steroids is pretty sad. And all the slurping about how it's "the greatest comeback in sports history" is ridiculous when it's not even better than Ben Hogan's.

This is Koepka's sport now.

I don't follow golf in any way, nor have I ever watched a second outside of Tiger, but I've seen some corny mans on twitter that hate him because of the shit with his ex-wife:lol

If you hate an athlete for that, then I doubt you'll find more than 10 guys that you'll like in all of sports:lol

Btw, anyone who thinks steroids would actually help tiger has never played golf. A good golf swing requires being limber and flexible, being too muscular would destroy any fluidity and range of motion, not to mention how much it would fuck up your muscle memory when you putt.

Only advantage he really had over the old greats is equipment (multilayer balls especially) and LASIK, tbh. The latter I'm not too sure how much impact it had. Pretty sure Jack wouldn't be THAT much better with the same advantages

In Tiger's defense his father did not do Tiger any favors in the love department. Tiger's father did not have the game to pull down an attractive white chick, attractive latin chick or attractive black chick so like a lot of men who have no game when it comes to women, Tiger's father bought himself a prostitute/bar girl/mail order bride from the orient to start a family with. For someone like Tiger, who like pops had no game, once Tiger became famous he was fine with fucking mediocre porn whores and plain Jane skanks because Tiger had no shot with them growing up because he was a black nerdy kid with chinky eyes and no personality.

So now, when Tiger achieved fame, those mediocre Beckies who rejected him look real good to him, like goddesses, he's going to run through as many mediocre plain Jane Beckies as possible to make up for lost time, hell, that babysitter he married that knocked his ass out with a 9 iron has a mediocre face and body.

Also, players would have to fall to the ground after every shot and then get rewarded by getting a free attempt at a birdie. Then double-handjobs would have to be a prominent clubhouse activity. That would draw a few soccer fans to golf.

My response to this will always be to tell you to walk a 7200 yard course (not counting distance between holes) in 90 degree heat where between practice swings and real swings you’re taking 100+ swings and tell me if you’re sore the next day.

Why do people define how "sporty" something is by how tired you get? There's more to physical demand than exhaustion. Creating a mechanically great golf swing (for all the types of shots you'll encounter, from drives to putts) is more "physically demanding" than anything you'll do in basketball or football. A great golf swing requires a lot more "moving parts" to function together than a jump shot or dribble-drive. Basically, the learning curve is far higher for playing good golf than it is for playing good basketball.

Golf is much harder than many of the "athletic sports." Too many sports fans fetishize running, jumping, and "stamina." The mechanical demand of a golf swing is higher than it is for anything you'll do in basketball or football. And what makes a sport like golf hard as fuck, is you have no athletic recourse to fall back on. You have to execute. In basketball, if Lebron's jumper is off, he can rely on athletic "bully ball" to get easy lay-ups/dunks. Or he can focus on the defensive end to make an impact. You can effort your way to production in those sports. You can't in golf. Can't run faster, play harder, etc, etc to make up for some deficiency.

Lol. Golf is a 'sport' where the crowd has to be shushed before anything can happen. Give me a fucking break. That doesn't even compare to an opposing arena rocking to the rafters when you need to sink two free throws to tie a game down the stretch.

You obviously never played golf. Way harder than basketball. A 190 yard shot with an iron is much more technical than a FT it isn't even worth discussing. Ooooh, shooting from 15 feet away. Incredible degree of difficulty there. Golf crowds have to be shushed primarily because the technical demands are so high.

Golf is keeping golf alive. Just because those asinine hot take shows on ESPN and FS1 don't talk about anything else aside from Lebron and the Cowboys, doesn't mean golf isn't relevant. Masters, without Tiger contending, will typically do NBA Conference Finals ratings.

So your point is golf isn't as big as football or basketball? Water is wet. Golf never was. It's certainly more popular here than all sports but the big 4, arguably more popular than hockey. Golf has actually increased in popularity, even sans Tiger. Masters was doing about a 7 or 8 rating in the 70s (only 4 channels then. Ratings were inflated for just about everything back then). It does about the same number now.

I don't get the "Tiger effect." He never was the most exciting golfer to watch. Marketing is that good, I guess.

Look, I don't hate golf or any of the other pseudo-sport, tbh, but let's be honest here... it ranks up there with the World's Strongest Man competition, what Formula 1 has become, Nascar, Darts and Bowling championships... basically anything ESPN will run when there's absolutely nothing else going on...

Tiger, like Phelps, Dale Earnhardt JR, etc, apparently extremely talented people (nobody is going to take that away from them), are also part of the marketing hype a number of companies pitch all the time to try to garner some interest in an otherwise obscure 'sport'.

Nobody is claiming those 'sports' don't take effort or skill or any number of talents either, tbh, they're just basically the D-League of of sports.

:lol How do you figure that? There's more money to be made to be made in golf than nearly every other sport. Mickelson is a charisma vacuum and he makes more than Ronaldo. "D-league" sports are sports with no money in them, like Rugby :), since sports with no money typically draw less talented people. Qualifying a sport by how much "running around" you do is retarded. Golf has never been obscure. It's been a big sport since the first British Open, and a sport with more history than Twinktrot. At bolded, NBA playoffs were on today, and the Masters will crush it in ratings, even if Tiger didn't exist.

Well it is played year round, alot of events.

Golf is really interesting in that the average fan and participant is middle to upper class. It attracts the out of shape businessman that wants to get bombed over 18 holes.

A college student or even regular joe probably can't afford a set of clubs and scheduling a round. Some of my friends do it a handful of times a year. My Asian ex gfs father golfed regularly and he was quite wealthy

Yeah, golf is marketed toward the more well off, but it still draws NBA Conference Finals and sometimes NBA Finals level ratings for the Majors. Nono was implying it's a fringe sport. Fringe sports don't make their players multimillionaires. To me, a D-League sport is a sport where there's not much money to be made. Professional rugby players don't make shit, but Nono and many foreigners believe it's some huge International sport (international ratings show differently). A relevant sport is one that can sustain a lucrative professional league. This shows fans will have interest beyond patriotic bandwagoning (we don't care about Phelps unless it's the Olympics. No one would watch a pro swimming league here). Same goes for Volleyball, Field Hockey, Waterpolo, Track and Field sans 100m dash, Handball, Lacrosse, etc, all sports I'm sure Nono would consider "real" sports since you get tired. Those are D-league sports.

I'll simplify this point. If you have a talented, uber-coordinated kid, these are the sports he should be pushed into if his goal is to become rich (not considering motorsports):

Soccer, Baseball, Basketball, Football, Tennis, Golf, T20 Cricket, Ice Hockey, Boxing.

Those are the only relevant sports in the world. All other sports are simply followed out of patriotic pride when there's a big international event or they might have high participation numbers (volleyball), but don't have much interest in their pro-league.

Rugby is another B-Sides sport, tbh, if you ask me. And how much 4-5 guys make doesn't really tell me much about the sport either. Your average golfer isn't nearly making that much, and, if we're talking dollars, a Formula 1 race probably takes many, many more millions to organize and run than a golfing event. They're still largely niche sports, which doesn't mean they can't find sponsorship, it only means they haven't broken past that mass popular appeal (as a sport). This is where the personal marketing machines come in, and pump up 2-3 guys in hopes that people will hook into it.
That was the point I was trying to make, that's all, I'm not trying to knock off any sport particularly because it doesn't have a large popular appeal. I think it's silly not to acknowledge that reality.

When did becoming rich became this arbitrary goal? I can see that from an American viewpoint, tbh, but there's also other measuring sticks, like name brand recognition, etc. ie: while you probably couldn't name 100 handjob players from around the world, but can name 100 american football players, it's entirely the other way around in the rest of the world.

I would tier that list into:

1) Soccer, Basketball (universal sports, wide recognition)
2) Tennis, Boxing (generally good individual recognition)
3) Ice Hockey, Golf, Baseball, Car Racing in it's many forms (popularity exceeds a specific country, niche brand recognition with strong marketing on very specific players that could place them, not the sports, in tier 2)
4) Football, Cricket, Rugby (regional phenomenons)

Again, this is not a knock on Football or Cricket. I wouldn't dare saying a Football fan is any less engaged than a Soccer fan at all. It's just a different measuring stick.

The 50th best golfer still made over 2 million. I have to disagree that golf doesn't have mass appeal. One of the highest participated sports in the world, and majors do draw big worldwide ratings, comparatively speaking. Masters will probably do 20 million here and 30 million across the world, estimating. Wimbledon Final does about 90 million. I don't see how F1 is niche, either. It's arguably the second biggest sport in Europe.

My point by citing earning power illustrates a sport's relevancy. I'm sure 100 million people around the world tuned in to watch Michael Phelps break records, but swimming is largely irrelevant otherwise. A billion people play volleyball around the world, but the sport also has no flourishing professional league. I mostly agree with your tiers, but I think you undersell cricket. Sure, India boosts its fandom, but the sport is relevant beyond the subcontinent in Australia, UK, and the Caribbean.

My main issue is when sports fans dismiss sports like golf because they have this idea that a "real sport" needs to involve running and jumping to degree. Not sure if that's the angle you were coming from, though.

How many ppl do you think will be able to tell you that Patrick fucking Reed won last years Masters....only diehard Golf fans.

It's just a totally different category with Tiger in the hunt. Do you think I would have watched one second of the Masters if Tiger was on the 4th page of the Leaderboard? I hate to say it....but there are several ppl just like me. If Tiger is in the hunt....must watch. I really do like golf, a whole lot. But lets just cut through the chase and get real. Golf is a sport that the entire field can have a dad bod and you can compete. This is a huge reason for its popularity. You do not have to be anywhere CLOSE to being in shape and compete at a top level. This is very appealing to the average Joe sittin his large pizza, box uh chicken, taco bell, whataburger with cheese scarfin ass.

Thing is golf was never supported by a group of niche diehards until "Tiger brought the sport into the mainstream!" It's always been either the 5th or 6th most popular sport here, switching places with Tennis depending on whether or not there's a strong US men's field. Sure, Tiger bumped up the ratings in his prime by 20 or so percent, but golf didn't need/doesn't need Tiger to keep relevant. Its huge player base keeps it relevant. In any event, the Tiger effect is overrated. Also, golf might be the 4 in the big 4. Stanley Cup Finals haven't done over 9 million in the US in the last 40 years, while the biggest golf tournaments routinely do more. Shit, NHL playoff games are doing under a million and as a low as 300K on some networks. Non-major golf tournaments typically do a million or more.

I also find it funny our dipshit society needs "star power" to appreciate a sport. I don't understand this mentality, because how can a "transcendent athlete" suddenly make you watch a sport you don't like? compare their annual revenues. its dumb to pick out individual game ratings in sports where they aren't equivalents. NHL finals can be spread over the course of 7 different days. it would make sense to compare that to baseball/basketball but not to golf, nascar, football, etc

Revenue isn't the best measure. NFL doubles the revenue of the Premier League, but no one would claim the NFL is more relevant worldwide than the EPL. Golf also can't draw ticket sale money like the NHL, since there's not enough space/seating to accommodate 10-20 thousand people.

Nah. I just see as "FOMO." The bandwagon effect. How can you appreciate Serena or Barry or Floyd dominating if you don't understand why and how they are dominating? Especially a boxer like Floyd who isn't a knockout artist? Trout is the most dominant athlete in American sports right now, but he doesn't do it through hitting 70 homeruns, lacks charisma, and controversy, so the casuals don't have an entry point. Much like Floyd, Trout is a master technician. Floyd drew casuals with controversy, but is a "boring" boxer (not for boxing purists, obviously). If Floyd was a vanilla personality, I assure you no one would care. Point here is that people don't really care about watching dominance if the form it comes in isn't easy to digest, either through dominating in a simple and exciting way (knockouts, homeruns, dunks and three pointers - Duncan's metrical dominance didn't draw in casuals. They gravitated toward Kobe in that era) or a controversial/exciting personality. So basically, they treat sports as a soap opera.

sports and movies are ultimately an entertainment medium. i'm never going to watch curling even if somebody is dominating the fuck out of it.

if the sport itself is good enough (basketball, football, hockey) then more people can appreciate the "greatness" of the individuals rather than just entertainment value. if you're golf, soccer, tennis, swimming... you need to sell a star. the overall entertainment value just isn't there (outside the passionate base)

You don't think that's close minded? Soccer obviously is the world's sport, so people see it as great entertainment. Golf, baseball, cricket and slower paced sports are also popular around the world. Point is these sports are popular for a reason, because they are well designed sports and do have natural entertainment value. I see people who dismiss them as "boring" (which is a lazy argument) simply too close-minded or biased to investigate the nuances. I don't dislike soccer because it's "boring," but because of the flopping and mini-games. I will say that I do think sports where you can take the lead from a deficit are inherently superior, though, but that doesn't mean I find soccer "boring." It has its own unique characteristics to appreciate, when the players aren't falling down to the ground.

Maybe I sound elitist, but it seems we're collectively headed toward a mentality where we need constant stimulation to stay engaged.

If a sport is boring (and this applies to soccer too), then that’s a design flaw. The reality is most of these sports have flaws, it’s the fandom and tradition that make them popular. That’s why even niche or regional sports survive, despite perhaps not conquering the world as a whole.

Boring can be a feature, though. "Boring" or quietude often enhances the tension and makes the payoff more impactful. A gun finally going off in a slow moving thriller has more impact than whatever special effects Ironman and that human eggplant are constantly throwing at each other over 2 hours. This scene is cinematically more interesting than every Marvel movie ever made:

Mickletits is nearly a billionaire. Fagnaldo hasn't even cracked half-a-bil. Perhaps Ronaldo eclipses his net worth by the same age, but I wouldn't count on it. Golf endorsements are simply insane, since they're typically luxury goods that golf's consumer base buys. Soccer endorsements are, what, companies that manufacture malaria nets :lol

That’s very debatable, and frankly, ever changing. All sports had to reinvent themselves over time to keep their appeal.

The battle that ensues between purists and not purists in-between these changes describe very well the whole traditionalism in sports.

We should also make the distinction between watching and playing the sport. The best way to learn the nuances is by playing. Watching will require some sort of fandom involved (be it a stake in the game or prior knowledge), otherwise boredom normally kicks in.

:lol Lkrfan gets called pretty much every racist name under the sun and laughs it off, Fkla gets called Paco and cries about racism.

I actually think we might have something with the idea of using soccer stars to market to the dirt poor demographic.

Sure, there's historical design choices that made sense to change, like adding a shot clock in basketball, since coaches back then would exploit that and hold onto the ball for like 30 minutes. I would say that when a design element of a sport robs it of some of its nuances, change is needed. The problem arises, though, when the design change sacrifices nuance for entertainment value. The modern NBA is inarguably a more one dimensional sport compared to yesteryear, but keeping up with modern appeal demanded rule changes to increase pace and offense.

The reverse is kind of happening in baseball. It's also a more one dimensional sport vs. yesteryear, but not because of any design change, but because pitchers have more than caught up to the 60'6" mound distance. Everyone throws 98 now with off-speed shit that seems to break the laws of physics. I don't know how anybody gets a hit today. Baseball has been robbed of a lot of contact hitting and pitching nuances due to the overwhelming talent of modern pitching, so I'm in favor of change to get more balls in play, to massively reduce strikeouts, and to bring the art of pitching to contact back. I say it's a reverse to the NBA, because the changes would actually enhance baseball's variety while making the sport more entertaining, where the NBA's rule changes made it more one dimensional but more entertaining, to casuals and twitter at least.

FkLA is cool, and I've called him Paco before. Don't know why he took offense this time. He does irritate me when he tries to talk about baseball, though. He just has retardedly stupid opinions about the sport that are stated out of spite, probably because his dad forced him to play it and he struck out every time. But yeah, baseball doesn't have "real athletes."

Tyreek Hill: At his Pro Day at West Alabama, Hill ran a 4.24 in the 40. At Oklahoma State, Hill set a school record in the 60-yard dash with a personal best of 6.61.

When the Wolfpack held a scouting day later that fall, Turner ran a 6.26 60

Real sports with real athletes: basketball, futbol, football, rugby, tennis, hockey, volleyball, swimming, track, etc

Games where body type is irrelevant: fatball, golf, darts, billiards, professional gaming, automotive racing, etc

More on this. I can't resist making people with dumb opinions feel stupid. The "real" athlete that is Ronaldo who plays a "real" sport would rank among the 200s in sprint speed. Remember? He had a lab tested time of 3.61 seconds over 82 feet. Here's a ranked list of 90 foot times (and these aren't top times, but averages) in the MLB last season:

https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/running_splits?type=raw&bats=&year=2018&position=&team=&min=10

Broken up into 5 foot splits. We see that a ~3.61 80 foot time (which again is an average, and ran on a more difficult surface: loose dirt vs. carpet) would place in the 200s. Soccer's "greatest athlete" would simply be an average MLB athlete :lol. No, position players can't be of any body type (your cherry picked players are outliers, even the pitchers). This is a sport where fractions of second can decide the difference between being out or safe, where being able to run fast over 20 to 270 feet is pretty fucking important, from scoring from 1st to breaking on bunt from 3rd to chasing down a flyball.

There's more variety of body type in football and rugby, with the former featuring the fattest athletes in sports, as we know.

It would have to be advertised on the side of box cars and the back of H-E-B otherwise they would never see it.

FKLA just angry that that Italibeaner melted down once Tiger started sniffing his crack. I ain't ever seen a meltdown that bad in professional sports. The guy was up three strokes and went in the water what, twice? Then he did it like a third time and then he was just all over the place. You would think he shit himself and was walking around with drawers full of shit for the last four holes. Then most of the rest of the leaderboard it was like they took a hit off of a crack pipe. Even that kid who was just killing it after barely making a cut choked the last two or three holes and basically gave most of it back.

The first 100 customers will be entered into a raffle to win a signed Lionel Messi soccer ball and even a night in a hotel with running water!"

The beanwop would have gone in the water for a 3rd time too if the ground wasn't so soft from all of the rain on the shot where he had a relatively easy pitch shot fall short of the green. He completely imploded the way players who were paired with 2000s Tiger in the final round used to, but I'm not sure if it was any worse than the blowup Speith had at the Masters a few years ago.
