WASHINGTON — The U.S. decision to surge additional military forces into the Middle East was based in part on intelligence that the Iranian regime has told some of its proxy forces and surrogates that they can now go after American military personnel and assets in the region, according to three U.S. officials familiar with the intelligence.

The intelligence shows that an Iranian official discussed activating Iranian-backed groups to target Americans, but did not mention targeting the militaries of other nations, the officials said.

Among the specific threats the U.S. military is now tracking, officials say, are possible missile attacks by Iranian dhows, or small ships, in the Persian Gulf; attacks in Iraq by Iranian-trained Shiite militia groups; and attacks against U.S. ships by the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

The U.S. has accused Iran of moving missiles and missile components through the region's waterways for years, shipping missiles to the Houthis in Yemen and others. And Shiite militia groups like Baghdad Katib Hezbollah (BKH) have been in Iraq for years, acting essentially as sleeper cells. What is new and what has alarmed U.S. military officials, sources say, is the call to awaken and activate these existing threats.

One U.S. official said Iran usually conceals the missiles and components when delivering them to the Houthis. These missiles are visible to overhead surveillance, leading to concerns Iran could attempt to launch missiles from the dhows. There are some indications they have mobile launchers on board, as well, one of the officials said.

Bolton has been pushing for this for years. Given the overall incompetence and laziness of Trump, I would say Bolton has a chance of getting it, right under Trump's nose.

Did I mention we have no Secretary of Defense?

well on a positive note, Trump pushing oil to $100/bbl would probably kill his chances at reelection.
Unless maybe he's just looking for a reason to open up the strategic reserve.

The strategic reserve is pretty irrelevant volume wise. The problem with Iran is that their attitude may be "if we cant sell our oil, then nobody over here is going to sell oil". It would be simple for them to shut down the strait of Hormuz.

Bolton Is Spinning Israeli ‘Intelligence’ to Push for War Against Iran

John Bolton has gotten away with a dangerous deception.

to prepare the ground for an incident that could justify a retaliatory attack against Iran.

Bolton presented his threat and the deployments as a response to alleged intelligence about a possible Iranian attack on U.S. targets in the Middle East.

But what has emerged indicates that

the alleged intelligence does not actually reflect any dramatic new information or analysis from the U.S. intelligence community.

Instead, it has all the hallmarks of a highly political case concocted by Bolton.

senior Israeli national security officials played a key role in creating the alleged intelligence rationale for the case.

The new initiative follows an audacious ruse carried out last fall by Bolton and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo,

Bolton exploited that opportunity to press Pentagon officials to provide retaliatory military options, which they did, reluctantly.

A Criminal Affair: United States Imposes War on the Venezuelan People (https://www.counterpunch.org/2019/05/15/a-criminal-affair-united-states-imposes-war-on-the-venezuelan-people/)

To replace Venezuela’s government with one to its liking, the United States uses special war-making tools.

The plan is to make Venezuelans suffer enough so that, desperate, they will accept whatever government is presented.

Troops and weapons aren’t required.

That approached worked in Chile in 1973,

but so far in Cuba it hasn’t – after almost 60 years.

40,000 more Venezuelans died in 2018 than in 2017. The death rate jumped by 31 percent.

Pompeo conceded that U.S. sanctions against Venezuela “sometimes have an adverse impact on the people of Venezuela.”

he was celebrating:

“The circle is (https://www.state.gov/secretary/remarks/2019/03/290269.htm) tightening,

the humanitarian crisis is increasing by the hour.

I talked with our senior person on the ground there in Venezuela last night …

You can see the increasing pain and suffering that the Venezuelan people are suffering from.”

John Bolton, Far Worse Than You Realize

people do not quite know who John Bolton is.

They assume – rightly – that anyone in the Trump orbit must be either a moral weakling, a crazy person or someone with one foot out the door.

All true. But John Bolton is a unique and uniquely dangerous character.

nominated Bolton to serve as UN Ambassador

couldn’t even get confirmed in a Republican Senate for the simple reason that he was just too big a warmonger to be a safe pick even for UN Ambassador.

Bolton is a caricature of a militarist and warmonger.

Bolton doesn’t come from that worldview, as limited and as disastrous as it has proven.

In really every context he is for hard US dominance, unilateralism and war as the preferred course of action.

Again, he’s really the caricature

of a militarist, the kind of one-dimensional, clownishly hawkish type who gets described in small circulation left-wing magazines but can’t possibly exist in real life,

only he does exist and his name is John Bolton.

The second point is equally important. He’s no fool. He’s a very bright guy.

And – critically important – he’s a master of bureaucratic politics.

John Bolton is not the type to make those kinds of mistakes or allow his directives to get sidelined or forgotten in the federal bureaucracy.

that is combined to the almost total power of President Trump’s National Security Advisor (uniquely empowered,

even in the context of recent presidencies)

that makes for tremendous power and in Bolton’s case tremendous power to do awful things.

there’s really no one left in the Trump national security world to say no to him or ignore intemperate orders.

But there is Bolton who is precisely the kind of person who to goad the President into issuing such orders.

It would not surprise me in the least if he is pushing Trump on the idea that

a war or limited military engagement with Iran would ensure his reelection next year.

The United States meant to isolate Iran. It looks increasingly isolated itself.

The Trump administration has spent years trying to convince U.S. allies that the international community needed to isolate Iran. But this week, as a series of provocations appeared to raise the possibility of conflict, it looks increasingly as if the United States itself may be increasingly isolated.

Britain, historically the United States’ closest ally, is openly balking at the prospect of a war with Iran. A British military commander undercut U.S. claims of increased activity by Tehran’s proxies Tuesday, telling reporters that there had been “no increased threat from Iranian-backed forces in Iraq or Syria.”

Meanwhile, Spain announced Tuesday that it was pulling its frigate from a U.S.-led naval group that is headed for the Persian Gulf, telling reporters that the “U.S. government has taken a decision outside of the framework of what had been agreed with the Spanish Navy,”

The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini, told Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Monday that he should pursue a policy of “maximum restraint, avoiding any escalation on the military side,” she later told reporters.

The next day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the U.S. diplomat that he hopes the United States will not increase its military presence to push back on Iran, noting that “the region is overburdened with conflict as it is.”

Traditional U.S. allies such as Australia and Canada have remained quiet. Even Gulf Arab states that openly oppose Iran, such as Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, seem cautious this week. Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu may be the only world leader who has proactively praised the Trump administration’s tough stance on Iran.

It would still require significant drumming up. Illustrate to the public that Iranian leadership significantly mistreat its own people and you need a central villain figure. Even then WMD type of weaponry. Iran would likely also need to escalate but maybe they feel backed into a corner by US/Saudi.

But because of the massive failure of Iraq II, alot of Americans will require proof of how Iran directly threatens their well being in North America

There are a number of reasons going to war with Iran is a bad idea. Two of them are geography and population, two others are Iran's military strength and the low chance of the USA achieving its political objectives.

A hot war could diminish US influence even more in the region and would likely benefit Russia and China, much like the Iraq invasion did.

The cost in US blood and treasure would be immense, the blowback would last generations -- and for what?

Iran's military is about four times larger than Iraqs was, with an intact unified military that has been geared towards the US for decades. We would still squash them like bugs, but it would be very costly in many ways.

The conflicts of interest your dumb ass has been pretending aren't important because it's Republicans doing it are partially driving this, because we have sold our foreign policy part and parcel to Saudi Arabia through Kushner, with Bolton pushing the war angle like he has for decades.

Meanwhile you have a servile bunch of chickenshit Republicans in Congress that offer a steady "Iran Bad" stream of "disastrous Obama deal" propaganda, without any proposed deal that might be better.

ALSO:
"drone attacks" that someone sure seems to want to attribute to the Iranian proxies in Yemen, for some reason
British generals publicly stating "Iran isn't doing anything different or provocative that we have seen"

At this point, what does it say when the Iranian diplomats saying "we have not ramped up anything" is more credible that anything coming out of this administration?

If we go to war against Iran, we have so pissed off our traditional allies, that we will be pretty much going it alone. Strike that...we will have Saudis on our side, a PR nightmare after Kashoggi's dismemberment.

This whole thing is a shambling shit-show. I have zero confidence that Bolton/Kushner won't succeed in starting this because Trump is just too lazy to give a shit.

Iran dismisses possibility of conflict, says does not want war

Iran's top diplomat on Saturday dismissed the possibility of war erupting in the region, saying Tehran did not want a conflict and that no country had the "illusion it can confront Iran," the state news agency IRNA reported. Tensions between Washington and Tehran have increased in recent days, raising concerns about a potential U.S.-Iran conflict. Earlier this week the United States pulled some diplomatic staff from its Baghdad embassy following attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf.

"There will be no war because neither do we want a war, nor has anyone the idea or illusion it can confront Iran in the region," Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told IRNA before ending a visit to Beijing.

Amid Murky Intel, Experts Say Time to Be Clear:

Threat of War With Iran "Solely and Unequivocally" Trump's Fault

"Trump action provokes Iran reaction provokes U.S. reaction and suddenly march to another quagmire catastrophic war."

foreign policy experts and analysts are attempting to set the record straight by establishing

precisely who is responsible for the dangerously high tensions in the Middle East that could spark a catastrophic war.

The unequivocal answer, according to former CIA Middle East analyst Paul Pillar, is the Trump administration.

Iran sees 'no prospect of negotiations with America,' foreign ministry says (https://theweek.com/speedreads/843842/iran-sees-no-prospect-negotiations-america-foreign-ministry-says)

Iran, on the other hand, disagreed.

“Iran pays no attention to words. What matters to us is a change of approach and behavior," spokesperson Abbas Mousavi reportedly told the Fars news agency,

Domestic propaganda, paid for by the State Department.

Very foreseeable after Smith-Mundt restrictions on the domestic dissemination of US propaganda were repealed in 2012. This kind of shit used to be illegal.

There has been a nasty ongoing smear campaign directed against Iranian and Iranian-American journalists, academics, and activists because they have criticized administration policy and because they don’t echo hawkish talking points on Iran. It recently came to light that part of this campaign was receiving U.S. government funding that was supposed to be used to combat propaganda from foreign governments. Thanks to public exposure and pressure on the State Department, that funding has been suspended (https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/may/31/us-cuts-funds-for-anti-propaganda-group-that-trolled-activists):

The US state department has cut off funding to a group that purported to combat Iranian propaganda, after it was found to be trolling US journalists, human rights activists and academics it deemed to be insufficiently hostile to the government in Tehran.

The Iran Disinformation Project was funded by the state department’s global engagement centre which was created to counter foreign propaganda and disinformation. In recent weeks however, the group’s Twitter account @IranDisinfo targeted BBC journalists, thinktank experts and civil society advocates, denouncing them as being “mouthpieces” and supporters of the Iranian government.

In one case they singled out a researcher for Human Rights Watch (HRW), Tara Sepehri Far, because she had looked into the human rights impact of [US] sanctions on ordinary Iranians.

Bolton has been pushing for this for years. Given the overall incompetence and laziness of Trump, I would say Bolton has a chance of getting it, right under Trump's nose.

Did I mention we have no Secretary of Defense?

Oh, we're doing all the more telling now; but it was a false dichotomy when the truther couldn't be "all the more telling" the other day. :lol

Iranian cyber warfare, assassination of US officials, and terrorist attacks on people and oil infrastructure wouldn't be surprising. We won't get a pass for killing a top government official.

How so?

Slippery slope...

- US kills top Iranian official (... Archduke Ferdinand of Austria anyone...?)
- Iran buys nukes from Russia
- Iran pulverizes Tel Aviv et al with nukes
- US coalition pulverizes Tehran et al with nukes
- Russia launches nukes at Europe and US eastern seaboard
- US retaliates with the same
- .... what happens about China? Japan? The Korea's?

Trump’s order to kill Iran’s Soleimani puts American politicians in danger:

MSNBC’s Morning Joe

this actually moves beyond even the invasion in 2003 of Iraq,

because the United States of America last night,

the president of the United States of America last night decided to assassinate the No. 2 leader in a sovereign nation,”

Iranian leaders now obviously will feel free to do to American leaders.”
