Tyler Herro

School: Kentucky
Position: SG
Age: 19
Height: 6-foot-5
Weight: 195
Wingspan: 6-foot-5
Draft Range: 15 to 30

Why: Picture-perfect form on his jumper -- both when spotting up and on the move. Has an NBA-ready floater and is comfortable shooting off the dribble. Shot 87-for-93 (93.5%) at the line in his one season at Kentucky. Respectable athlete: can make quick moves with the ball, runs well, fast reaction speed, reasonably shifty. Willing and able to make smart passes. Makes a concerted effort to help out on the defensive boards.

Why Not: Only shot 35.5% on three-pointers, so his marksmanship is more theoretical than proven at this point. While he's a respectable athlete, he has two flaws: poor lateral quickness and poor leaping ability. The former really hurts him on the defensive end; it's going to be difficult for him to stay in front of NBA players and he doesn't have the length to compensate. The latter will make it difficult for him to finish at the rim -- he'll have to always rely on floaters and leaners in the paint.

Spurs Fit: He's only 19 so a year in Austin would be likely. However, if shooting is needed, he should be able to supply that early in his career.

Spurs Comparison - Ceiling: Bigger Bryn Forbes

Spurs Comparison - Floor: Smaller Andrew Gaze

Don’t we already have a few guards on the roster that can’t play defense?

Thanks for doing this btw. No whities though IMO.

late first/ or 2nd rounder seems ok for him. Good size, young and raw. Not ready for NBA ball yet

Other than a couple of inches of height, there's not much reason for him with Forbes on the roster. I think Bryn shot 39% as a freshman, and a LOT better than that the next years, so he doesn't even compare favorably with Forbes in that department.

But one of the big reasons why Forbes has a fatal flaw is his stature and lack of length. He has the will to develop but you can't teach height or length. If Forbes was 6'5"+ and longer/quicker (apparently as this guy is by his profile), he has a higher ceiling, definitely in defensive schemes. He wouldn't be a huge liability on that end.

I'm no expert on Tyler Herro, but from the little I watched him, I don't think he'll be any better on defense than Bryn. I think Bryn is quicker, and he put on a good bit of muscle since last year. By the end of the season, he was better defensively than he had been. And Bryn really is a knock-down 3P shooter - against NBA defenses, not just in theory. He shot .426 on 5 attempts per game this season. The chances of Herro being that good are pretty slim.

Having a hard time seeing what we're supposed to like about this guy. Another 6-5 guy, but this time without the athleticism? Would need to see multiple guards traded for me to be on board with this, even at 29.

Measured 6-foot-6 with shoes (better than expected) but he has only a 6-foot-3.25 wingspan.

One thing I like about Herro is that he is a baller he won’t shrink from taking last shot and will give max effort on offense and defense.

the guy played well as a freshman in the sec...hit some big shots, competed at a high level. i think hes a more athletic jj reddick, im not opposed to picking him at 19, if a few guys are gone at that point.

Herro looks amazing in shooting drills. Stock seems to be rising a bit.

I just don't see how the Spurs pick him at 19, though. I guess the only way is if the Spurs think Forbes will be overpaid next summer and want to get a cheaper replacement.

Ugh, f me. If SA is truly worried about replacing Mills/Forbes/Beli with 19 then what are we even doing here? That is not a need and while I like Forbes, you don’t draft guys like him with your best first round pick. You can find those players, IMO, without needing to draft them. Like you can with 3rd string Centers; there are a surplus of them.

And if SA is really worried about Forbes, trading him to move up on the draft should be a lock.

Shooter with short arms was the extent of my comparison. He will probably never have the career Bonner did.

ACC or SEC, Spurs prefer drafting West Coast players who get less media exposure. That has been a trend.

Two guys playing in Florida. Overall, guys with less media exposure. That’s the key.

More recently, in general, players from UCLA, Washington, Colorado, San Diego...

“I’m just trying to show I can actually defend. I defended really well in college, but obviously with my wingspan being short, things like that, I’ve just got to prove at this level that I can defend.”

According to league data, Herro’s wingspan measures 6 feet, 4.5 inches.

He has now worked out for the Spurs and Magic, and still has workouts scheduled with the Heat, Pacers and Timberwolves.

Herro is projected by nbadraft.net to go 21st to the Thunder.
